Chinook food bank

    CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School is sponsoring the Chinook Food Bank in the Chinook School building at 810 State Route 101 in Chinook.     LONG BEACH Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N. Pacific Highway is hosting a free community Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 5 p.m., on Nov. 22. The public is welcome to come enjoy this wonderfully prepared, free meal.

Thanksgiving dinner

    ILWACO Inn at Harbour Village at 121 Williams Avenue in Ilwaco is the location of a free community Thanksgiving dinner from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Nov. 22. Family and friends are all welcome to enjoy great food, fun and friendship. No one will be turned away while there is food to serve. Holiday closures

    PENINSULA Post offices, banks and credit unions, as well as the Chinook Observer will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22 for the Thanksgiving holiday. These businesses will be open regular hours on Friday, Nov. 23. Many businesses, city and county offices as well as Timberland libraries will be closed both Thursday and Friday.

Bazaar & Santa pics

    LONG BEACH From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 23 and Nov. 24, the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road, will hold a Christmas bazaar. There will be local crafters with a good variety of handmade items available. Plus Santa will be at the grange from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 24 for family pictures. Come find some great special gifts for that special someone.

Studio tour

    PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Associations 5th Annual Studio Tour offers two days of savory art exploration. On Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving weekend), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 17 private studios and area galleries open their doors to the public for a chance to see the hands of an artist at work. This peninsula-wide tour begins in Chinook and travels to the north tip of Surfside. Maps of the route are available at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau in Seaview, the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce, on PAAs website at www.beachartist.org as well as in the Nov. 21 edition of the Chinook Observer. The event is free to the public and suitable for the young and young at heart.

Polar Express

    LONG BEACH Beginning at 1 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 23 all ages are welcome at the Neptune Theater, 809 Ocean Beach Boulevard South in Long Beach for a complimentary showing of The Polar Express, hosted by Mrs. Claus and a few special guests! The snack bar will be open for snack purchases.  (Donations for next years movie will be gladly accepted.)

Photos with Santa

    NASELLE The third annual Santa photo event will be held at the Appelo Archives Center at 1056 SR 4 in Naselle on Saturday, Nov. 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Photos of Santa with children, or with full families, will be taken by a local photographer with prints available before Christmas to give as gifts. It is hoped families will continue to use this opportunity for gathering for photos during the Thanksgiving weekend. The photos will be taken downstairs this year. Santa and Mrs. Claus

    LONG BEACH At 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 24 magic comes to the Elks Lodge at 110 Pacific Way North in Long Beach. Be early for the best seat to watch Mrs. Claus and her special helpers!  You know never know what Mrs. C has up her sleeve or when Santa might roll into to town! Free craft activities will be available for the kids before and after the shows. Make and take home a holiday souvenir for your own tree. Then at 3 p.m., on Saturday, come for free pictures with Santa Claus. Bring your very best smiles and whisper to Santa what you wish the most for during this season of celebration and thanks. Photographs will be taken by Cardenas Photo Studio. And from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., enjoy holiday caroling at the gazebo in downtown Long Beach. Sing classic carols like Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Feliz Navidad. Merchants will be open for convenient holiday shopping! At 6 p.m., join the Mayor of Long Beach and his special guests for the city of Long Beach tree lighting ceremony. Later, stop by the Hungry Harbor to see the Christmas Village Display. Also swing by Pacific Ave S and 9th Street to find the newest lighted display, the sea serpent!

Ocean Park library closed

    OCEAN PARK The Ocean Park Timberland Library will be closed for approximately three weeks beginning on Saturday, Nov. 24 to finish the renovation. The library is expected to re-open to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The outdoor book drop will stay open during the library closure. The project includes an addition to the back (south) side of the library, expanding the interior space from 3,240 to 5,292 square feet. The highlights of the project will be new and larger quiet reading areas, a separate teen space, a larger childrens area, more computers, additional shelving, lighting for the shelving and new furnishings, carpet and paint.

    ILWACO  Washington Dental Service Foundation SmileMobile will be providing examinations Nov. 26 and Nov. 27 at Ilwaco Middle-High School at 400 School Road in Ilwaco. To schedule an appointment for your child please call 206-418-8970 today. Follow-up treatment appointments will be scheduled on a space available basis. The SmileMobile is staffed by a clinic manager, dentist and dental assistant, and teams of local volunteer dental professionals. Medicaid and sliding scale fee is accepted as reimbursement for services.

Pizza and Wellness Panel

    SEAVIEW Free pizza, salad and a panel on How We Help Each Other are the focus for NAMI Pacific Countys meeting on Nov. 27. The program will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center social hall, 5000 N Place in Seaview. Barbara Bate will lead a panel discussion on the ways people can survive and recover from brain-based illnesses. There will also be chances for those present to share their experience in coping with weather changes and holiday events.  People attending are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for a local food bank. Cake auction

    ILWACO On Wednesday, Nov. 28 during halftime of the Ilwaco girls and boys basketball games, there will be a cake auction. This is an awesome way to get a delicious cake and support a good cause. Proceeds go to the Class of 2013 substance free graduation party.

Taking Control of Diabetes

    ILWACO Beginning at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, Mary  Martin will deliver a free educational program and share diabetes self-management and lifestyle strategies based on extensive training and her personal experience living with diabetes. Topics to be covered include: achieving good glucose control, learning about effective self-management, developing a balanced, healthy lifestyle, planning and prioritizing diabetes management, overcoming fears surrounding diabetes and finding resources for diabetes support. If you or someone you know is struggling with diabetes or has an A1C that is 7 percent or above, the A1C Champions® can provide motivation to take those first steps to better blood glucose control. Diabetes is a chronic, widespread condition characterized by high blood sugar in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, the hormone needed to transport glucose (sugar) from the blood  into the cells of the body for energy.     ILWACO Saturday Christmas Market will be held from       10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Time Enough Books building at 157 Howerton Way at the Port of Ilwaco on Nov. 24, Dec. 1, Dec. 8, Dec. 15 and Dec. 22. Find great gift ideas and bargains on a terrific assortment of handmade soaps, apparel, jewelry, holiday wreaths, wind chimes, arts and crafts and much more.

Legion Holiday bazaar

    ILWACO The American Legion Auxiliary is holding a holiday bazaar with tables filled with crafts and handmade items by your talented local neighbors. The bazaar will be open from         10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1. Plus there will be a table of delicious baked goods for sale. And lunch will be prepared and served by the Legionnaires. Proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Battalion Project and local veterans.

Family game night

    ILWACO From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 30 at the Boys and Girls Club in the Black Lake Community Center, the community is invited to a family game night. There will be board games, card games, an open gym, resource tables and lots more.     ILWACO Peninsula Players is hosting three one-act plays at the River City Playhouse at 127 Lake Street S.E., in Ilwaco. At       7 p.m., on Nov. 30, Dec. 1, Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 and at 2 p.m., Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. The first, Misdeeds at Mistletoe Mine or Sanity Clause, written by Tim Koenig, directed by Robert Lindberg, assisted by Patrick Gore. The second, An Implausible Claus, written by Nikki Harmon, directed by Sherry Ahlers, assisted by Cory Bardonski. And finally, Scrooge has left the Building, written by Pat Cook, directed Ed Ahlers.

Red Hats luncheon

    LONG BEACH  The local Red Hats will meet for lunch at noon on Dec. 1 at the Ocean Park fire hall. Come, wear your red hat, and bring a friend. Bring toys for the toy drive and a gift for the gift exchange. Also bring a tea cup for tea. Guests are welcome.

Tree lighting & more

    OCEAN PARK On Friday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. the lighting of the community tree in Ocean Park will take place at the Ocean Park Eagles on Bay Avenue. Santa will arrive at the Ocean Park fire station at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy the tree lighting and share refreshments and lots of fun, and get their picture taken with Santa as well. The Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors these events.

Christmas play

    RAYMOND The Willapa Players are presenting an early Christmas gift to the Willapa Harbor community. They will be doing A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas, by Laurie Brooks, opening the first weekend in December. Raymond Kiwanis are sponsoring a gala opening night on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m., at the Hannan Playhouse on Eighth Street in Raymond. Christmas punch and Christmas cookies will be served. Tickets for that show are available from any member of the Raymond Kiwanis or by calling 942-5239. Additional performances are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1; Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. There will be a matinee performance on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at Everyones Video and More in Raymond and at the South Bend Pharmacy, or at the door at half an hour before curtain.

Relay for Life bazaar

    RAYMOND  Calling all vendors! The Raymond High School Relay For Life team is hosting the Fourth Annual Hope For the Holidays Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to    2 p.m. at the Raymond High School Commons. Interested vendors can reserve a space for only $25 plus one raffle item. The bazaar gives local vendors a chance to sell their items, get their name out to prospective customers, and give back to Relay For Life in their community. Registration deadline is Nov. 28. Boat parade & tree lighting

    ILWACO Everyone is encouraged to come to the Port of Ilwaco for the lighting of the crab pot Christmas tree and the lighted boat parade on Dec. 1. Beginning at 5 p.m. watch the lighting of the worlds tallest crab pot Christmas tree and sing crabby carols. The Ilwaco High School Jazz Band will perform, and then enjoy the lighted boat parade to Cape Disappointment and back. Register your boat at the Imperial Schooner Restaurant by calling 642-8667. Tsunami debris response plan

    SEAVIEW The Washington State Marine Debris Task Force is holding a community meeting to answer questions and gather feedback about the state plan for responding to marine debris from the tragic March 11, 2011, Japan tsunami that may cross the Pacific Ocean and reach Washington beaches. The local meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place in Seaview. The response plan is designed to address high-impact types of debris, such as a large dock or debris containing hazardous materials like oil, as well as a potential steady influx of small nonhazardous debris. The task force collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to develop the plan. Christmas bazaar

    ILWACO  Vendors are wanted for the Pacific Bible Churchs Christmas Bazaar set for Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are looking for vendors who would like to have a table(s). It is $10 per space if you bring your own table and $15 if one is provided for you. Ideas might be tables with Tupperware, Partylite or Mary Kay products, handmade items, honey, jams, etc. Space is limited and is filling up fast so please call Eric at 642-4466 if you want a space. Pacific Bible Church is located on the hill above Black Lake.

Christmas bazaar

    RAYMOND  There will be a Christmas Bazaar on Friday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Pacific County Senior Center, 324 Jackson Street in Raymond. Vendors include: Paparazzi, It Works, Tastefully Simple, Creepy Beautiful, Mary Irwin Watercolors as well as locals crafters that make jewelry, leather goods, baked goodies and candies. Come have a hot cup of spiced tea and check out the vendors. Lunch will be served at 11:45 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will include spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, and dessert. Lunch prices are $3.50 seniors 60 and over, and $8 for those under 60. Plus you can still rent a table if you wish. Come support this great event. Proceeds will benefit the Senior Nutrition program. Tuba Christmas

    ILWACO Everyone is invited to attend the free tuba Christmas concert at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 9. Enjoy traditional and jazz versions of Christmas standards performed by the Astoria Tuba Quartet at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 Lake Street in Ilwaco. Tour of homes

    NASELLE The annual Finnish American Folk Festival Concert and Tour of Homes will be held Sunday, Dec. 9. The concert will begin at 1 p.m. at the historic Deep River Pioneer Lutheran Church, featuring the Naselle Kanteles, soloists Lisa Bighill and Karen Nelson, Cooley-Wolfe Singers and Ringers, and the Finn-Am Choir. Anna Ehrlund will again tell the history of the church, which is over 100 years old, and has retained its original features. The concert will close with traditional Christmas carols. Three local homes will be open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Tickets with maps, are $5 each, and benefit the Finn Am Fest. They will be available at the concert and at Hair Villa in Naselle, at Finn Ware in Astoria and at Radio Shack in Seaview, or any of the featured homes. Featured homes will be marked by signage and balloons. A variety of soups will be served by the Priscilla Circle of Naselle Lutheran Church, 308 Knappton Rd, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This delicious tradition is the perfect way to end your day.

Winter heating help

    PACIFIC COUNTY The low income home energy assistance program is starting soon.  Coastal Community Action Program will open phone lines Thursday, Dec. 13 to begin making appointments. Appointments can also be made online at www.coastalcap.org. The program provides financial assistance to help income eligible households make home heating more affordable. If you live in the Raymond/South Bend area, you can call 942-5739 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment. For all other areas please call 533-5100 or 800-828-4883 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to make an appointment.  Income guidelines apply.
