Author Readings

    ILWACO  Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, hosts a monthly Authors Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for Oct. 24. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Red Ribbon Week

    PENINSULA  WellSpring Community Network invites the community to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Ribbon Week through Oct. 31. The red ribbon symbolizes a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities. Activities scheduled throughout the week include visits from local law enforcement to the schools and Red Ribbon Week specials offered by local merchants. Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles. Feathers

    TOKELAND  Beginning at 4 p.m., on Oct. 26, Shoalwater Bay Community Library is featuring Thor Hanson, author of the book, Feathers, who will present a slide show and reading in the Shoalwater Bay Tribal Center in Tokeland. Hanson, a biologist, details the sweeping natural history of feathers, which are used to fly, protect, attract and adorn. Feathers are considered the most efficient insulating material ever discovered. They silence the flight of owls and keep penguins dry below the ice and have decorated queens, jesters and priests. OBH support group

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. A member of the hospitals chemotherapy team will facilitate the meeting. Family game night

    LONG BEACH From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, there will be a family game night at Long Beach Elementary, 400 Washington Avenue South. Bring the whole family to this fun event. Community Historian Project

    ILWACO  The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting the Community Historian Project which includes 15 weeks of one-day classes, speakers, tours, demonstrations and opportunities (January through April) followed by an additional 15 hours of advanced training. The goal of the project is to develop a cohesive group of knowledgeable people who can be called upon for information and who can become a heritage resource to their communities. Saturday, Oct. 27

I.H.S. Carnival

    ILWACO  On Oct. 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Ilwaco High School is holding a carnival in the Black Lake campus gym. There will be lots of games, food, inflatables and community fun for all ages. Christmas Bazaar

    KLIPSAN  From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27, the Peninsula Senior Activity Center is hosting a Christmas bazaar. Local crafters will be selling their wares and in addition to the bake sale, lunch will be served both days. Additionally, there will be a raffle drawing for an Eric Wiegardt frame print, $100 cash, handmade quilts and many other prizes. Raffle tickets are available at the senior center or during the bazaar.

Great pumpkin patch

    LONG BEACH The public is invited to partake in the third annual Great Pumpkin Patch and Myers Cemetery at the Veterans Memorial Park behind the Long Beach Police Station (South Third and Oregon streets) on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, kids 12 and under can pick out their very own pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. Harvest Fest

    NASELLE  A Harvest Fest will be held at the Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Knappton Road, on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. until       4 p.m. Come enjoy a sausage and sauerkraut lunch for a donation. Fresh donuts and soft pretzels will be also served from the kitchen. The Lutheran bakers offer a variety of breads and other oven delicacies including some of the traditional Finnish recipes. Fresh cranberries for holiday serving, as well arrangements for decorating can be purchased. Bring your Christmas list as there will be an array of handmade items for your consideration. NAMI basics

    SEAVIEW NAMI basics will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. The class is free but register quickly, as space is limited to 16 participants. The event is set up to inform, support and advocate for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents who have mental health, substance issues, attention or other brain disorders. Through county millage funds, NAMI Pacific County is able to bring experienced volunteer trainers Jamie and Meghan Gilbert from Ellensburg to lead the basics course. Every participant gets a large take-home notebook with information on the brain, stories from other parents, caregiver tips, and local and regional resources. Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig has been approved on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Oct. 27 and Oct. 28, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Great pumpkin patch continued

    LONG BEACH The public is invited to partake in the third annual Great Pumpkin Patch and Myers Cemetery at the Veterans Memorial Park behind the Long Beach Police Station (South Third and Oregon streets) on Sunday, Oct. 28 from noon to 5 p.m. Come by for the pet costume contest, pumpkin pie eating and a pumpkin carving competition. Howl-O-Ween Pet Pictures

    LONG BEACH Come to Veterans Park in Long Beach, behind Funland on Sunday, Oct. 28 and have your pets photo taken between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Donations to the South Pacific County Humane Society, our local no-kill shelter, are much appreciated.

Box tops for education

    PENINSULA The Ocean Beach School District participates in the Box Tops for Education and the Labels for Education programs. This is an easy way to help out our schools. Drop your collected box tops and labels off at the Long Beach School on Washington Street, Ocean Park Elementary School or at the Chinook Observer office at 205 Bolstad Avenue East in Long Beach.

Photography exhibit

    SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall will be featuring an exhibit by local photographer Nick Deal, who has won many awards in photography at the Washington State Fair and other county fairs in Washington and Oregon. He is a young man who has a unique view of the environment, concentrating on the architecture of negative and positive space, giving us all a different way of seeing our world. The exhibit titled As I See It, is now open run through Nov. 18. Redmen Hall is at 1394 SR-4 in Skamokawa, and is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. If you have questions call 795-8675.

Voice of Democracy

    PACIFIC COUNTY  The National Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to announce scholarship programs for students. The two programs, titled Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen are open to students in the sixth through 12th grades. Entry forms are available at the local schools and can be obtained from the chapter by calling 665-3458 or 665-2513. Deadline for entries to the local chapter is Oct 30.

Book give away

    ILWACO On Oct. 30, children are invited to come to Ilwaco Timberland Library in costume or not, for the Trick or Treat Book Give Away. Participants can choose a book to keep as their own.     SEAVIEW St. Peters Church is hosting a series by Father Tom Schaffer. Each Tuesday, during October, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the public is encouraged to come to the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview and hear this dynamic speaker.

Halloween party

    OCEAN PARK Pacific County Fire District No. 1 is holding a Halloween party at the station on Ridge Avenue. Doors open at 6 p.m. and close at 8 p.m. Kids are encouraged to come enjoy hot dogs, games and some great trick or treating in a safe, fun environment.

Flu shots

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Health Department is holding a flu shot clinic on Oct. 31 at the Long Beach office on Sandridge Road. The cost is $25. Make your appointments by calling 642-9349, ext. 2 to schedule your time. Pacific County Health Department accepts Medicaid/Medicare but does not bill supplemental insurances or private insurance.

Bunco for Food4Kids

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks holds bunco the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. November games will be on Nov. 1 and Nov. 15. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. This program provides a backpack with food for needy kids to take home on Fridays so they have something to eat on the weekend. If you have questions call 642-8244.

Bake sale & bazaar

    SEAVIEW  From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, there will be a holiday bake sale and bazaar at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. There will be homemade pies, pottery, cranberry baskets, jewelry, knitting, wooden puzzles, photography, hand-sewn items, books, glassworks, watercolors and more. Ocean Beach Presbyterian Womens Association will receive 15 percent of vendor proceeds to help fund mission work both locally and abroad.

Rummage sale

    RAYMOND  Pacific County Senior Center at 324 Jackson Street in Raymond is having a rummage and bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 3 from       9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Senior Nutrition Program. Elk chili feed

    NEMAH  Nemah elk hunters are holding a chili feed from 5 p.m. to    8 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Nemah School at milepost 35 on Highway 101. In addition to chili, the menu includes oysters, salads, homemade pies and more. Everyone is welcome to this annual all-you-can-eat feed.

Bayside Singers perform

    CHINOOK Beginning at 3 p.m., on Sunday Nov. 4 at the Fort Columbia Theatre in Chinook, the Bayside Singers, in cooperation with the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists, present A Fall Concert for All Ages. Barbara Poulshock will direct the concert with accompaniment by Barbara Bate. Included in the program are solos, duets, small ensembles and choral pieces featuring the Bayside Singers as well as members of the local community. Concluding selections will be a medley from Gilbert and Sullivans The Mikado. Bring family and friends to enjoy a potpourri of lighthearted musical selections that celebrate the fall season.  Tickets are $5 at the door. The Discover Pass is not required for this event.

    U.S.A. Turn back your clocks for the end of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m., on Sunday, Nov. 4. Fire departments encourage you to change the batteries in your smoke detectors at the same time.

Photo Contest

    PACIFIC COUNTY Camera enthusiasts are invited to submit entries to a fall photo festival sponsored by the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Closing date for pictures featuring refuge scenery and plants or local wildlife will be Nov. 2. There are three subject categories  refuge scenes, wildlife and native flora. Entry photographs need to be 8×10 inches (preferably glossy print) and can be left at the Picture Attic located in Long Beach or at the Refuge office at 3888 State Route 101 in Ilwaco, along with the entry fee of $10. At the annual membership meeting on Nov. 10, the entries will be displayed and attendees will select their favorite. The first prize winner will be awarded $50, a years membership in the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge organization and display of the winning photo in 2013 Friends publications and on its website. Second and third place photographers will receive prizes of $30 and $20 respectively and a Friends T-shirt.     LONG BEACH  The local Red Hats will go out to lunch at the Cove Restaurant located at Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m.  Come, wear your red hat, and bring a friend. There will be no Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Chinook food bank

    CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School is sponsoring the Chinook Food Bank in the Chinook School building at 810 State Route 101 in Chinook. Holiday Bazaar

    BAY CENTER  The Bay Center Womens Club is having their second Holiday Bazaar on Nov. 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the old Bay Center Store/Community Center. Ocian in View

    ILWACO  The annual Ocian in View cultural program is set for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10. As part of this program the historical significance of the newest addition to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Middle Village/Station Camp Unit at McGowan, will be highlighted. On Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m., Canneries of the Lower Columbia by Irene Martin, will be featured. This presentation is about Martins latest research on canneries of the Lower Columbia, and will focus on the McGowan Packing Company. On Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, the Columbia Confluences bus tour will run. Join Jim Sayce, Washington State Historical Societys manager for local projects, as he guides the tour and get a rare opportunity to tour St. Marys Catholic Church. The cost is $20 per person. Be sure to call the museum for reservations. Also on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Chinook Tribe will host their annual salmon dinner at the museum. The dinner includes regional seafood, salad, Indian fry bread, dessert and beverages. The cost is $15 per person, seniors (55 and over) $13, children under 12 eat for $5. No reservations are required. Also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., come to the How Horriable is the Day, an open house hosted by the Knappton Cove Heritage Center. Veterans Day    

    LONG BEACH  Beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, the Long Beach Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Don R. Grable Post #48 of the American Legion and Auxiliary will host an observance of Veterans Day for our community at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. A meal that includes ham, green beans, scalloped potatoes and beverages will be provided.  All attending are asked to bring a dish to share: those with last names beginning with A-L, please bring salads and M-Z, please bring desserts. All veterans (anyone who served in the armed services at any time), active duty persons and their families and community members are invited to attend. Parkinson support

    OCEAN PARK A combined October/December Parkinsons disease support group meets on Nov. 16 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church, 24002 U Street in Ocean Park. Shoalwater Shenanigans

    OYSTERVILLE and CHINOOK  Shoalwater Shenanigans II is returning Nov. l7 to the Oysterville Church and Nov. 18 to Fort Columbia Theater in Chinook, with performances at 2 p.m. in each location. This program includes stories and music from early days in the region. Thirty characters from Willard Espys lively book of local history, Skullduggery on Shoalwater Bay are brought to life on stage by local actors. Admission is $5 admission at the door. 4-H Turkey Shoot Fundraiser

    RAYMOND On Saturday, Nov. 17 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Willapa Harbor Gun Club at 37 Butte Creek Road in Raymond, youth through adults are invited to participate in a 4-H shooting sports turkey shoot. Tickets are available at the range and are $5 for 10 pellets. Oven ready turkeys and prizes will be awarded in each age category. (Air rifles will be provided.) In addition there will be a bake sale, silent auction and lunch. This is a fundraiser for Pacific County 4-H Shooting Sports Project. For information call Toni at 875-9331.
