The Line

    OCEAN PARK  On Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., in the Ocean Park Elementary School cafeteria, a screening of The Line, a 45-minute documentary about the new faces of poverty across the U.S., will be shown. Following the film there will be a discussion on local poverty issues led by people from Peninsula Poverty Response. Refreshments will be provided. Thursday, Oct. 18

AAUW Candidate Form

    LONG BEACH  The Willapacific Branch of the AAUW will host a voters forum on Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge at 110 N. Pacific Highway. Candidates for county commissioner positions one and two, along with senate and state candidates will be there to take questions and present their positions of issues in the upcoming election. The issues of focus are: charter schools, same-sex marriage and legalization of marijuana. (There will be speakers representing both sides of the charter school issue.) Community members can submit questions ahead of time printed on 3×5 cards and sent to P.O. Box 385, Long Beach, WA 98631, or before the forum begins for presentation to the candidates. Volunteer with PCEMA

    RAYMOND  The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) is hosting a volunteer orientation on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Willapa Harbor Hospital at 9 a.m. Attendees will learn the different volunteer opportunities available through PCEMA as well as learning the steps to become a volunteer. PCEMA offers many outlets for volunteers including public education, Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES), and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The orientation is open to all residents of Pacific County. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is encouraged to attend. Bunco for Food4Kids

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks holds bunco the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m., at 110 N. Pacific Highway. These are potluck gatherings so bring something to share. The cost is $5, which goes to support the Food4Kids backpack program. Prizes will be awarded to winners. This program provides a backpack with food for needy kids to take home on Fridays so they have something to eat on the weekend. If you have questions call 642-8244.

Tsunami sirens test

    PACIFIC COUNTY  The Pacific County All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) outdoor sirens will be tested as part of the Great Washington ShakeOut on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10:18 a.m. with the actual tsunami siren tone (a three-minute wail), followed by a verbal message. The AHAB sirens in Pacific County and the other outer Washington coastal counties are being activated to conduct a true end-to-end test of the entire tsunami warning system. Pacific County residents are encouraged to participate in the Great Washington ShakeOut by registering at www.shakeout.org/washington/ and by conducting a personal drill such as drop, cover and hold or an evacuation walk.     PENINSULA Everyone is invited to join thousands across the state of Washington for Drop, Cover and Hold set for 10:18 a.m., on Oct. 18. This is a great Washington shake out drill. Community Historian Project

    ILWACO  The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is hosting the Community Historian Project which includes 15 weeks of one-day classes, speakers, tours, demonstrations and opportunities (January through April) followed by an additional 15 hours of advanced training. The goal of the project is to develop a cohesive group of knowledgeable people who can be called upon for information and who can become a heritage resource to their communities. Saturday, Oct. 20

Oktoberfest

    CHINOOK Friends of the Chinook School are hosting the eighth annual Oktoberfest Chinook Style at the Chinook School gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 20. Dinner and the silent auction run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the live auction is set to start at 8:15 p.m. Tickets for adults are $20; tickets for children under 12 years old are $10, and all are available at the door. Enjoy a superb German-style food menu, a wine raffle and live music by the Beach Buddies. All proceeds benefit the restoration of the Chinook School building.

OBH Pressing Matters

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital Foundation is hosting a session entitled Pressing Matters beginning at 11 a.m., Oct. 20 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ocean Beach Hospital Gift Shop. This session is for women to learn, celebrate, inspire and support each other. Fun with Pharaohs

    ILWACO  Ilwaco Timberland Library will host family day from        1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 20, for children. The theme is Fun with Pharaohs. Climb out of that old sarcophagus and dust off your best mummy threads for a party on the Nile! Join in an afternoon of Ancient Egyptian-themed fun, including writing hieroglyphs, competing in a cat mummy race, crafting fabulous Egyptian accessories and learning about a fascinating ancient culture. Under the North Star, Part II

    NASELLE On Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m., Appelo Archives Center, located at 1056 SR-4 in Naselle, will show part two of the film Under the North Star. This film covers the third book of the trilogy written by Väinö Linna. Titled The Reconciliation by translator Richard Impala, it deals with the aftermath of the Civil War in Finland, the Lapua movement of 1929-32, the depression in the 1930s, the Winter War of 1939-1940, the Continuation War of 1941-44, and finally the calm of post-WWII years. There is no admission charge, but donations of $5 are recommended. Note: The film is 129 minutes long, is in Finnish with English subtitles. It is not recommended for children due to sex and nudity, violence and gore, frightening/intense scenes, profanity, alcohol, drugs and smoking. NAMI basics

    SEAVIEW NAMI basics will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview. The class is free but register quickly, as space is limited to 16 participants. The two Saturdays are set up to inform, support and advocate for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents who have mental health, substance issues, attention or other brain disorders. Through county millage funds, NAMI Pacific County is able to bring experienced volunteer trainers Jamie and Meghan Gilbert from Ellensburg to lead the basics course. Every participant gets a large take-home notebook with information on the brain, stories from other parents, caregiver tips, and local and regional resources. Salmon canneries

    ASTORIA  Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop is hosting their next In Their Footsteps program set for Sunday, Oct. 21 at     1 p.m. This presentation is Salmon Canneries in the Columbia River Estuary by Irene Martin. Many fish canneries have operated in the Columbia River Estuary over the years. Martins research has resulted in a wealth of cannery-related photos, documents, artifacts and stories that she will be sharing from. Martin is a historian and author whose most recent book Flight of the Bumble Bee: The Columbia River Packers Association and a Century in Pursuit of Fish chronicles the 1899-1980 history of Astorias Bumble Bee Seafoods. These programs are held in the Netul River Room of Fort Clatsops visitor center and are free of charge. For more information, call the park at 503-861-2471.

Box tops for education

    PENINSULA The Ocean Beach School District participates in the Box Tops for Education and the Labels for Education programs. This is an easy way to help out our schools. Drop your collected box tops and labels off at the Long Beach School on Washington Street, Ocean Park Elementary School or at the Chinook Observer office at 205 Bolstad Avenue East in Long Beach.

Monday, Oct. 22

Medicare help

    KLIPSAN On Monday, Oct. 22 at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., all with a need are invited to get help with Medicare annual enrollment. Staff from Information and Assistance in Long Beach will be on hand to help you review changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan and/or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan and select your plan for 2013. Please bring your Medicare card, a list of current medication and any current insurance information. Call 642-3634 for more information or if you are unable to attend this session.

No book donations

    OCEAN PARK Due to construction at the Ocean Park Library, they cannot accept book donations at this time. Please take donations to the Ilwaco Library if you need to get rid of them or if at all possible, keep them until the Ocean Park Library once again has a place to hold them. If you have several boxes of books you can inquire at the library and they will give you a phone number to call where arrangements might be made for a Friends board member to pick them up.

Photography exhibit

    SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall will be featuring an exhibit by local photographer Nick Deal, who has won many awards in photography at the Washington State Fair and other county fairs in Washington and Oregon. He is a young man who has a unique view of the environment, concentrating on the architecture of negative and positive space, giving a different way of seeing our world. The exhibit titled As I See It, is now open run through Nov. 18. Redmen Hall is at 1394 SR-4 in Skamokawa, and is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. If you have questions        call 795-8675.

Kids Gardening Day

    LONG BEACH On Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., in celebration of National Farm to School Month and Kids Gardening Day there will be an event at Green Angel Gardens, 6807 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Supported by the Peninsula Farm to School group, nearly 70 students from Long Beach Elementary will be planting, harvesting and learning about where our food comes from. Flu shots

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Health Department is holding a flu shot clinic at the Long Beach office on Sandridge Road. The cost is $25. Make your appointments for the clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., by calling 642-9349, ext. 2 to schedule your time. Pacific County Health Department accepts Medicaid/Medicare but does not bill supplemental insurances or private insurance.

    ILWACO  Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, hosts a monthly Authors Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for Oct. 24. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Veterans meeting

    LONG BEACH Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3721 in Long Beach will hold their monthly membership and business meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Elks Lodge located at 110 Pacific Avenue in Long Beach. Feathers

    TOKELAND  Beginning at 4 p.m., on Oct. 26, Shoalwater Bay Community Library is featuring Thor Hanson, author of the book, Feathers, who will present a slide show and reading in the Shoalwater Bay Tribal Center in Tokeland. Hanson, a biologist, details the sweeping natural history of feathers, which are used to fly, protect, attract and adorn. Feathers are considered the most efficient insulating material ever discovered. They silence the flight of owls and keep penguins dry below the ice and have decorated queens, jesters and priests. OBH support group

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. A member of the hospitals chemotherapy team will facilitate the meeting. I.H.S. Carnival

    ILWACO  On Oct. 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Ilwaco High School is holding a carnival in the Black Lake campus gym. There will be lots of games, food, inflatables and community fun for all ages. Christmas Bazaar

    KLIPSAN  From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27, the Peninsula Senior Activity Center is hosting a Christmas bazaar. Local crafters will be selling their wares and in addition to the bake sale, lunch will be served both days. Additionally, there will be a raffle drawing for an Eric Wiegardt frame print, $100 cash, handmade quilts and many other prizes. Raffle tickets are available at the senior center or during the bazaar.

Great pumpkin patch

    LONG BEACH The public is invited to partake in the third annual Great Pumpkin Patch and Myers Cemetery at the Veterans Memorial Park behind the Long Beach Police Station (South Third and Oregon streets) on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, kids 12 and under can pick out their very own pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. That day will also host adult and kids costume contests. On Sunday, come by for the pet costume contest, pumpkin pie eating and a pumpkin carving competition. Harvest Fest

    NASELLE  A Harvest Fest will be held at the Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Knappton Road, on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. until        4 p.m. Come enjoy a sausage and sauerkraut lunch for a donation. Fresh donuts and soft pretzels will be also served from the kitchen. The Lutheran bakers offer a variety of breads and other oven delicacies including some of the traditional Finnish recipes. Fresh cranberries for holiday serving, as well arrangements for decorating can be purchased. Bring your Christmas list as there will be an array of handmade items for your consideration. Voice of Democracy

    PACIFIC COUNTY  The National Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to announce scholarship programs for students. The two programs, titled Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen, are open to students in the sixth through 12th grades. Students enrolled in public, private or parochial schools, or a home study program are eligible to participate. VFW Chapter 3721, the local chapter, will be the focal point for entrants on the Long Beach Peninsula and Naselle. Entry forms are available at the local schools and can be obtained from the chapter by calling 665-3458 or 665-2513. Deadline for entries to the local chapter is Oct 30.

Book give away

    ILWACO On Oct. 30, children are invited to come to Ilwaco Timberland Library in costume or not, for the Trick or Treat Book Give Away. Participants can choose a book to keep as their own. Rummage sale

    RAYMOND  Pacific County Senior Center at 324 Jackson Street in Raymond is having a rummage and bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 3 from      9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Senior Nutrition Program.     U.S.A. Turn back your clocks for the end of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m., on Sunday, Nov. 4. Fire departments encourage you to change the batteries in your smoke detectors at the same time.

Photo Contest

    PACIFIC COUNTY Camera enthusiasts are invited to submit entries to a fall photo festival sponsored by the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Closing date for pictures featuring refuge scenery and plants or local wildlife will be Nov. 2. There are three subject categories  refuge scenes, wildlife and native flora. Entry photographs need to be 8×10 inches (preferably glossy print) and can be left at the Picture Attic located in Long Beach or at the Refuge office at 3888 State Route 101 in Ilwaco, along with the entry fee of $10. At the annual membership meeting on Nov. 10, the entries will be displayed and attendees will select their favorite. The first prize winner will be awarded $50, a years membership in the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge organization and display of the winning photo in 2013 Friends publications and on its website. Second and third place photographers will receive prizes of $30 and $20 respectively and a Friends T-shirt. Holiday Bazaar

    BAY CENTER  The Bay Center Womens Club is having their second Holiday Bazaar on Nov. 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the old Bay Center Store/Community Center. They are looking for venders of handcrafted items or food. Proceeds from this event will help to fund community projects such as free school supplies, new baby supplies, and other general projects. Ocian in View

    ILWACO  The annual Ocian in View cultural program is set for Nov. 9 and Nov. 10. As part of this program the historical significance of the newest addition to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Middle Village/Station Camp Unit at McGowan, will be highlighted. On Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m., Canneries of the Lower Columbia by Irene Martin, will be featured. This presentation is about Martins latest research on canneries of the Lower Columbia, and will focus on the McGowan Packing Company. On Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, the Columbia Confluences bus tour will run. Join Jim Sayce, Washington State Historical Societys manager for local projects, as he guides the tour and get a rare opportunity to tour St Marys Catholic Church. The cost is $20 per person. Be sure to call the museum for reservations. Also on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Chinook Tribe will host their annual salmon dinner at the museum. The dinner includes regional seafood, salad, Indian fry bread, dessert and beverages. The cost is $15 per person, seniors (55 and over) $13, children under 12 eat for $5. No reservations are required. Also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., come to the How Horriable is the Day, an open house hosted by the Knappton Cove Heritage Center.
