Head Start Preschool Enrollment
LONG BEACH The Head Start program is taking applications for preschool enrollment. Head Start serves low-income families with children ages three-to-five years old, preparing them for entry into kindergarten. Classes start Sept. 20 and will be held four days a week for three and a half hours a day. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day. There is no cost to eligible families. Beach to Chowder marathon
LONG BEACH On Sept. 15 the Beach to Chowder half marathon is set. Participants run on the Discovery Trail through ocean dunes. There will be eight age divisions of competition, with many prizes awarded to top finishers. Clam chowder will be served at the awards ceremony in downtown Long Beach. ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics is hosting a health fair from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the hospital. Speakers include Patty Malone, M.D., who will discuss Prevention and Screening Tests for Women; Mark Bonanno, J.D., M.P., who will talk about the importance of legal and medical paperwork and what everyone should know; and Neal Mathews, pharmacist, who will discuss carbohydrates, insulin resistance and weight gain. Plus there will be free basic hearing, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks and much more.

SURFSIDE The Ilwaco Sports Boosters are holding a fundraising golf tournament on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Surfside Golf Course. Registration is at 8 a.m., with the scramble-shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Teams consist of four players and the cost is $160 per team. Tee sponsor fees are $50. The fees include 18 holes of golf with lunch. There will be awards for longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and more. There are several session called Get Prepared Pacific County, for adults. Family to Family class
LONG BEACH NAMI Family to Family course is a free 11-week program for family, household members and friends who want to understand, support and advocate effectively for a loved one who is affected by a mental health condition. Family to Family classes started on Tuesday, Sept. 11 but will still accept participants for the following two weeks. The class is held each Tuesday for 11 weeks at 6 p.m., in the PUD conference room 6910 Sandridge Rd. Long Beach. The instructors will be Rosi Sartwell and Carole Wiegardt. Family to Family was the focus of a study over a four-year period by a University of Maryland psychiatrist and a psychologist. The conclusion was that the family members who participated in Family to Family classes showed that significantly overall empowerment as well as empowerment within their family, the service system and their community; greater knowledge of mental illness; higher rating of coping skills; lower ratings of anxiety related to being able to control conditions; and higher reported levels of problem-solving skills related to family functioning. ILWACO A king, a girl who is believed to have an incredible spinning skill, and a manipulative little man will bring audiences back to their childhood in the Peninsula Players newest presentation, Rumpelstiltskin. A musical production written and scored by Robert and Wilma Frankovich, Rumpelstiltskin is produced by Bill Nickila. Banjo band performs
RAYMOND Grays Harbor Banjo Band will perform a concert Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m., in the Raymond Theater. This concert is a fundraiser for the Pacific County 4-H shooting sports project. Tickets are $10 per seat and are available at the door and from any 4-H shooting sports members. Funds are being raised to send the county team to the state and national championships. The 4-H shooting sports project is open to youth between the ages of 8 and 19. From September through April adult 4-H shooting sports leaders are offering instructional events for rifle and maybe archery at the Willapa Harbor Gun Club. Youth do not have to be currently enrolled in 4-H to participate. Medicare open enrollment
KLIPSAN On Monday, Sept. 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., an informational meeting entitled, Preparing for Medicare Open Enrollment will take place at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan. Hosted by Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA), this free seminar is intended for those getting ready for Medicare or those who want to know more. Prescription drug take back
SEAVIEW On Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WellSpring Community Network, Long Beach Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to Sids at 4401 Pacific Way in Seaview. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Photo Contest
PACIFIC COUNTY Camera enthusiasts are invited to submit entries to a fall photo festival sponsored by the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Closing date for pictures featuring refuge scenery and plants or local wildlife will be Nov. 2. There are three subject categories refuge scenes, wildlife and native flora. Entry photographs need to be 8×12 inches (preferably glossy print) and can be left at the Picture Attic located in Long Beach or at the Refuge office at 3888 State Route 101 in Ilwaco, along with the entry fee. At the annual membership meeting on Nov. 10, the entries will be displayed and attendees will select their favorite. First prize winner will be awarded $50, a years membership in the Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge organization and display of the winning photo in 2013 Friends publications and on its website. Second and Third place photographers will receive prizes of $30 and $20 respectively and a Friends T-shirt. LONG BEACH Beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and continuing each Monday through Nov. 5, the public is invited to participate in workgroup for parents and youth ages 10 to 14. There will be a wide range of topics for parents/caregivers including: making rules and consequences, solving problems, ways to show love and support and more. Youth will learn how to handle frustration, resist peer pressure, get along with others and more. Each session includes a free meal and childcare is availble. Pre-register by calling 783-2356. The cost is $35 but scholarships are available.

ILWACO On Saturday, Sept. 29, there will be a dinner and dance at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The event is a fundraiser for the Shedore family. Dinner is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and there will be music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door.
OBEF dinner & auction
LONG BEACH On Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Long Beach Elks Lodge the Ocean Beach Education Foundation will hold their annual dinner and auction. This years theme is Wild, Wild West, with the goal of blazing the trail for students of Ocean Beach School District.
