School supplies drive

    PENINSULA Summer vacation is almost over and students will soon return to class. The Chinook Observer is once again fundraising and gathering school supplies so that local, low-income kids have the materials necessary to start the academic year off right. We need to purchase backpacks so monetary donations would be greatly appreciated. Basic school supplies are also welcomed. Donations can be dropped off at the Chinook Observer office at 205 East Bolstad Ave. East, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to      5 p.m. Donation checks should be made out to the Chinook Observer and mailed to P.O. Box 427, Long Beach, WA 98631. (Supplies will be distributed the week of Aug. 20.)

Camp Victory Sign-up Time

    SEAVIEW  You are invited to learn how you can participate in Camp Victory, the Peninsulas annual four-day recreational camp for child survivors (ages 5-18) of sexual abuse. An informational session will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will meet members of Camp Victory and learn how to become involved in creating a safe, nurturing environment for these children. Volunteers will be provided with 34 hours of training before camp. Free Lunches

    PACIFIC COUNTY All children aged 18 and under can eat a healthy, nutritious meal for free Monday through Friday between 11:45 a.m. and        12:30 p.m. (If you are over 18, you are still welcome but sack lunches are just $3.) Just show up to a participating site between the designated times! Locations are: Culbertson Park at Washington and 2nd Street in Long Beach; Black Lake Community Center at 404 School Road in Ilwaco and at Ocean Park Elementary, 25701 Vernon Avenue.

Diabetes support

    ILWACO From 6 p.m. to    9 p.m., Aug. 15, Norm Stutznegger, of Pacific Coast Medical Supply Diabetes Equipment, will give a presentation at the next diabetes support group to be held in the Ilwaco Community Building. Astronomy

    RAYMOND Raymond Timberland Library is hosting a program called Astronomy for Everyone: Size & Scale of the Universe, from 7 p.m. to          9 p.m., Aug. 15 for teens and adults. Astrophysicist Kevin Manning offers information and activities about the size and scale of the universe, the stars, and other celestial wonders using hands-on activities and assorted visuals. After the program, participants will view sunspots through a telescope with a solar filter (the same one NASA uses). For more information call 942-2408.

Neptune Classic Movies

    LONG BEACH The Neptune Twin Cinemas offers family and classic movies with no charge for admission, subject to capacity. All family and classic shows begin at 1 p.m. The movie on Aug. 15 is Carousel, starring Gordon McRae, Shirley Jones. 1956. 128 min.

Beach party dinner

    KLIPSAN On Thursday, Aug. 16, beginning at 5 p.m., the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan is hosting a beach picnic party dinner that includes oven-fried chicken, potato salad, cucumbers in sour cream, tomatoes, strawberry shortcake and lemonade. Attendees should wear sandals for an extra treat! The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Call 665-3999 for information.

Book discussion

Managing chronic illnesses

    ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the final workshop at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, offered on Thursday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Aug. 16. Blues & Seafood

    ILWACO The Blues and Seafood event is happening at the Port of Ilwaco on Friday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Aug. 18. The Friday night jam brings the Coyote Kings at 7 p.m., followed by North Coast Blues at 8:30 p.m., with special all-star jam guests. Saturday is filled with great performers, starting at 4 p.m., when Boogie Bone perform, 5:30 p.m., The Strange Tones and the Volcano Vixens take stage, at 7 p.m., the Norman Sylvester Band is on tap and at 8:45 p.m., the Heartbreakers featuring Lucy Hammond, Rae Gordon, Lady A, Lady Kat True Blue, Maggie Kitson and Mary McPage. Friday night is just $10 to attend; Saturday is $20 or you can purchase a combo ticket for $35 that covers Saturdays Blues and Seafood and Sundays Jazz and Oysters in Ocean Park. Farmers Market

    LONG BEACH Columbia Pacific Farmers Market is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., every Friday in downtown Long Beach. Come check out the wide variety of homegrown foods and flowers, and the onsite prepared goodies.  There will also be music by George Coleman and lots of fun so come downtown and enjoy.

Blues guitar audition

    ILWACO The Ilwaco Merchants Associations board of directors will raffle off a guitar signed by all the performers at this years Blues and Seafood event. The proceeds will go to Mike and Bea Shedore, who lost their boat the Two Mikes on July 22. The Two Mikes sank after hitting the jetty at Newport, Ore. Mike has ALS and is unable to do many of the things we all take for granted. If you cannot attend Blues and Seafood and want to buy a raffle ticket for the guitar, contact Clint Carter at the Imperial Schooner at 642-8667. I.H.S. School Reunion

    ILWACO  The annual Ilwaco High School Alumni Association all school get together for alumni, their spouses, family and friends will be held Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school football practice field. I.H.S. Class of 1962

    LONG BEACH  The Ilwaco High School graduating class of 1962 is holding their 50th reunion on beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Cove Restaurant at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The cost is $32 per person, which includes the rent of the restaurant which will be closed to the public during the event; appetizers, dinner and dessert, tax and tip. For the birds

    SKOMAKAWA  Redmen Hall will be celebrating the end of summer with a collection of art, crafts and whimsy including a display of mounted birds from the Audubon Society titled Lower Columbia River Wildlife Collection. In addition many pictures, paintings, quilts, carvings, prints and more on display will be for sale. This exhibit is open-ended and welcomes entries from artists and craft people during the weeks of the exhibit to replace what is sold. The exhibit opens on Aug. 18 and runs through Sept. 30. There will be a reception for the artists on Aug. 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and are hoping to have representatives from the Audubon Society to answer questions about local birds and their habits, as well as the artists to discuss their work. Jazz & Oysters

    OCEAN PARK On Sunday, Aug. 19 from noon to          7 p.m., you dont want to miss the 17th annual Jazz and Oysters event at Wilson Field, 25815 Sandridge Road in Ocean Park. Youll enjoy the jazz club atmosphere complete with oysters, desserts, beverages and more. Monday, Aug. 20

School supplies distributed

    LONG BEACH Distribution of school supplies  is scheduled for Aug. 20 through Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Chinook Observer office, located at 205 East Bolstad Ave., in Long Beach. Volunteers are needed to help with distribution. Call Jan Bono at 642-4932 to sign up to help.

Kite Festival

    LONG BEACH The annual Washington State International Kite Festival is set for Aug. 20 through Aug. 26 on the approach between Sid Snyder Drive and Bolstad Avenue. The week includes a wonderful variety of competitions by professional and amateur kite flyers, choreographed kite flies, mass ascensions, fireworks, lighted night kite flies, vendors and much more. The trolley will run Wednesday and Thursday from noon to          5 p.m., and Friday from noon to 9:30 p.m. It will also run regular route runs from 10 a.m. to        9:30 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, with hotel, motel, RV park drop offs upon request.

Come bowl!

    ILWACO Ilwaco Hilltop Bowl is starting fall leagues. On Aug. 20 at 7 p.m., the Friendly League (four-woman teams) will have their league meeting at Hilltop Bowl. All interested women bowlers please plan on attending.  League bowling will start on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. The Harbor League (four-man teams) meets on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. The Coffee Breakers (three-person mixed teams) will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 9:30 a.m., and this league starts bowling Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. This is a great league for retired folks and people who dont want to drive at night. The Starlight League (four-person mixed teams) meets on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. A new league, Wednesday Doubles, has a new format. Come to the meeting at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 12 for details. Bowlers of all skill levels are welcome on any league. Never bowled before? Dont worry if you dont have a ball or shoes, come on out anyway! There is a $17 annual membership fee and each league sets its own fees for bowling, but figure $12 to $15 per night. Most leagues last 32 weeks.     ILWACO The weight room will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Field stadium in Ilwaco this summer.

Boys & Girls Club

    ILWACO The Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula is holding  a summer program starting Aug. 20 and running daily through Aug. 31, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to indoor club activities, this summer program features outings to the Timberland Library, Black Lake and the Ilwaco City Park. Tuesday, Aug. 21

CERT training

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a free training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), on Tuesday Aug. 21, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue. People-to-people seminar

    OCEAN PARK On Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Family Worship Center at 264th and Ridge Avenue in Ocean Park is holding a free people-to-people seminar with a variety of great information on many topics including: health issues, blood pressure checks, glucose checks, parenting grandchildren, parenting parents, financial assistance programs for all ages and much more. Plus there will be local food bank information, presentations and information from the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, Ocean Beach Hospital, DSHS and more. Call 665-6340 if you have questions.

One Act Festival

    ILWACO Peninsula Players One-Act Festival, at the River City Playhouse at 127 Lake Street in Ilwaco, runs Thursday, Aug. 23, through Saturday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, Aug. 26. at 2 p.m. The cost is just $5. Come support local theatre.

First aid/CPR

Barbeque and more

    GRAYS RIVER Everyone is welcome to a fun night at Grays River United Methodist Church for a barbeque set for       6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25. Among other things on the menu will be hot dogs and smores.     ILWACO This years Timberland Book Sale is set for Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at a new location in the former Ilwaco High School atrium, adjacent to IHS football field. Slow-Pitch ball

    SOUTH BEND Softball teams are invited to play in a slow-pitch, wood bat softball tournament on Labor Day weekend. From Aug. 31 through Sept. 2, the South Bend will host Wood on the Willapa, an eight-team tournament to benefit Willapa Harbor Helping Hands and the Labor Day fireworks fund. The tournament structure is as follows: Friday evening and Saturday will be Round Robin play; Sunday is tournament play; four games guaranteed; $225 per team (13 player limit); bats and balls provided; championship T-shirts provided and participation is limited to first eight teams paid in full. Teams will play at the South Bend Community Park. The tournament is sponsored by Top Notch Tavern, Health Pros NW, Chester Club and Oyster Bar, Buds Lumber and Electric, Dennis Company and Pioneer Grocery. Drill conductor course

    ASTORIA A two-day drill conductor course on marine safety and survival training is being offered Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., each day at the Clatsop Community College Marine Sciences Building in Astoria. The course is free of charge and meets all the state and federal requirements for commercial fishermen. The topics of instruction include but are not limited to: personal safety gear, a personal safety kit, safety regulations, onboard drills, dewatering pumps, cold water survival skills, hypothermia, an in-water practicum and much more.
