School supplies drive

    PENINSULA Summer vacation is almost over and students will soon return to class. The Chinook Observer is once again fundraising and gathering school supplies so that local, low-income kids have the materials necessary to start the academic year off right. We need to purchase backpacks so monetary donations would be greatly appreciated. Also, there is a need for donations of basic school supplies such as pencils, paper, pocket folders and similar items. Donations can be dropped off at the Chinook Observer office at 205 East Bolstad Ave. East, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donation checks should be made out to the Chinook Observer and mailed to P.O. Box 427, Long Beach, WA 98631. (Supplies will be distributed Aug. 20 through Aug. 24, from       9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Free Lunches

    PACIFIC COUNTY All children aged 18 and under can eat a healthy, nutritious meal for free Monday through Friday between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (If you are over 18, you are still welcome but sack lunches are just $3.) Just show up to a participating site between the designated times! Locations are: Culbertson Park at Washington and 2nd Street in Long Beach; Black Lake Community Center at 404 School Road in Ilwaco; and at Ocean Park Elementary, 25701 Vernon Avenue.

Caregivers support

    LONG BEACH A caregiver support group meets Wednesday, Aug. 8 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the PUD auditorium at 9610 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. The group is designed to provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are providing care to another. Managing chronic illnesses

    ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. This series of classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., through Aug. 16. Space is limited. The goal of the program is to help participants live a healthy life by managing symptoms. Vintage Trailer Rally

    SEAVIEW  The SouWester Lodge in Seaview is hosting the first annual vintage trailer rally and RV classic Aug. 10 through Aug. 12. Arts & Craft Auction

    NASELLE There will be a sidewalk arts and craft auction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 11 at the Appelo Archive Center, located at 1056 SR-4 in Naselle. The preview of items begins at 10 a.m., the live and silent auction start at 11 a.m., and the silent auction closes at        4 p.m. Refreshments will be available. There will be three ways to bid: a live auction, a silent auction and a select group of items that will be listed on the centers Facebook page at www.facebook.com/appeloarchives. This event is being held

to increase awareness of the talents in the local area and to raise financial support for the Appelo Archive Centers projects. The Center is still seeking donations, so contact the office.  Items such as baked goods, books, paintings, knitted and crocheted items, woodcarvings and sculpted pieces are but examples of the items the Center hopes to receive.

Wildlife membership barbecue

    ILWACO On Saturday, Aug. 11, the Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will host their annual membership appreciation barbecue. The barbecue will be at the Refuge Headquarters on Highway 101 near mile marker 24 and begins at 1:30 p.m.  Members are also invited to participate in a trip to Long Island for a short hike to the old growth cedar grove.  The trip to Long Island leaves at 9 a.m.  It will return by 1 p.m. The trip is limited to the first 100 members to sign up. Art Night

    ILWACO The Port of Ilwaco is holding an art night on Aug. 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., on the waterfront at the marina. All are welcome.

Chili Cook-Off

    SURFSIDE Sharpen up your taste buds, get out your best chili recipe and enter the annual Surfside Chili Cook-off. The benefit will beheld Aug. 11, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The event is free and open to all. The festivities will be held at the Twin Lakes Pavilion in Surfside. Mona and Paki Perkins of Inversion will provide entertainment. The waterfront park is at 1712 324th Avenue between Q and T. The cook-off benefits the Ocean Park School Back Pack food program. The Peninsula Clay Artists have donated an array of handcrafted bowls, which can be purchased for $15 with all of the proceeds going to the school program. Entrants should arrive with their chili at 12:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Questions may be directed to the Surfside office at 665-4171.  

Soccer workshop

    OCEAN PARK Youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to learn the basics of futbol at a workshop hosted by New York youth soccer coach Sashamani Francois. From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12, Francois will teach new futbol techniques at Ocean Park Elementary. The fee to participate is $25 per day or $40 for both days. Classic Car show

    ASTORIA  The Lower Columbia Classics Car Club will hold their annual Regatta Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 11, in Astoria in conjunction with the Regatta week celebration. The show, which runs from       9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be held at 12th Street between Duane and Exchange avenues. Car registration starts at      8 a.m., and costs $15. Waikiki Beach concert

    ILWACO At 7 p.m., on Aug. 11, the public is invited to Cape Disappointment State Parks Waikiki Beach for a concert by the band Bost Family Traditions, a bluegrass band from Arizona. Bring a lawn chair and other personal comforts and sit back and enjoy some great music at this free outdoor concert. The concert is free but a Discover Pass is required to get into the park. Edible Gardens tour

    PENINSULA  The Edible Gardens tour will take place from noon to 5 p.m., on Aug. 12. View a variety of gardens that grow different kinds of food. Continue the conversation with the after-tour lasagna dinner at the Long Beach Grange at 6 p.m., and admire the food donations that have been gathered for local food banks. Tour and dinner tickets are available at Adelaides Books in Ocean Park, Planter Box Nursery in Long Beach, The English Garden Nursery in Seaview, participating gardens during the tour, and dinner tickets at the door at the Grange.

Vesper services

    OYSTERVILLE The Vesper service for 3 p.m., Aug. 12 at the historic Oysterville church includes Pastor David George from New Life Church in Ilwaco, presiding over the gathering. Music will be provided by the Women of Bayside Singers. Sandy Nielson will play the pump organ. Jean Stamper will provide the Oysterville moment. All are welcome to this casual, uplifting get together.

Judging orchids

    ASTORIA How To Judge An Orchid is the topic for the Sunset Empire Orchid Societys Aug. 12 meeting, set for 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church located at 725 33rd Street in Astoria.  The guest speaker is Craig Williams who is an orchid judge for the American Orchid Society. His topic is how plants are judged in an orchid show, including how to groom plants, stake the flowers and arrange in a display. He can also share experiences he has had at various shows. Patriotic pops concert

    CHINOOK The Columbia River Symphony will perform a patriotic pops concert at the Chinook School Gym beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the Chinook School Gym. This is a fundraising concert and 50 percent of the proceeds from the concert benefit the restoration of the Chinook school. For information go to www.columbiariversymphony.org.

CERT training

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a 10-week training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This free training runs every Tuesday through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue. Blues guitar

    ILWACO The Ilwaco Merchants Associations board of directors will raffle off a guitar signed by all the performers at this years Blues and Seafood event. The proceeds will go to Mike and Bea Shedore, who lost their boat the Two Mikes on July 22. The Two Mikes sank after hitting the jetty at Newport, Ore. Mike has ALS and is unable to do many of the things we all take for granted.     OCEAN PARK On Sunday, Aug. 19 from noon to 7 p.m., you dont want to miss the 17th annual Jazz and Oysters event at Wilson Field, 25815 Sandridge Road in Ocean Park. Youll enjoy the jazz club atmosphere complete with oysters, desserts, beverages and more. I.H.S. School Reunion

    ILWACO  The annual Ilwaco High School Alumni Association all school get together for alumni, their spouses, family and friends will be held Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school football practice field. I.H.S. Class of 1962

    LONG BEACH  The Ilwaco High School graduating class of 1962 is holding their 50th reunion on beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Cove Restaurant at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The cost is $32 per person, which includes the rent of the restaurant which will be closed to the public during the event; appetizers, dinner and dessert, tax and tip. Kite Festival

    LONG BEACH The annual Washington State International Kite Festival is set for Aug. 20 through Aug. 26 on the approach between Sid Snyder Drive and Bolstad Avenue. The week includes a wonderful variety of competitions by professional and amateur kite flyers, choreographed kite flies, mass ascensions, fireworks, lighted night kite flies, vendors and much more. The trolley will run Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 5 p.m., and Friday from noon to 9:30 p.m. It will also run regular route runs from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, with hotel, motel, RV park drop offs upon request.

Come bowl!

    ILWACO Ilwaco Hilltop Bowl is starting fall leagues. On Aug. 20 at 7 p.m., the Friendly League will have their league meeting at Hilltop Bowl. All interested women bowlers please plan on attending.  League bowling will start on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

People-to-people seminar

Slow-Pitch ball

    SOUTH BEND Softball teams are invited to play in a slow-pitch, wood bat softball tournament on Labor Day weekend. From Aug. 31 through Sept. 2, the South Bend will host Wood on the Willapa, an eight-team tournament to benefit Willapa Harbor Helping Hands and the Labor Day fireworks fund. The tournament structure is as follows: Friday evening and Saturday will be Round Robin play; Sunday is tournament play; four games guaranteed; $225 per team (13 player limit); bats and balls provided; championship T-shirts provided and participation is limited to first eight teams paid in full. Teams will play at the South Bend Community Park. The tournament is sponsored by Top Notch Tavern, Health Pros NW, Chester Club and Oyster Bar, Buds Lumber and Electric, Dennis Company and Pioneer Grocery. Drill conductor course

    ASTORIA A two-day drill conductor course on marine safety and survival training is being offered Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., each day at the Clatsop Community College Marine Sciences Building in Astoria. The course is free of charge and meets all the state and federal requirements for commercial fishermen. The topics of instruction include but are not limited to: personal safety gear, a personal safety kit, safety regulations, onboard drills, dewatering pumps, cold water survival skills, hypothermia, an in-water practicum and much more.
