Chinook Food Bank

Free Lunches

    PACIFIC COUNTY All children aged 18 and under can eat a healthy, nutritious meal for free Monday through Friday between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (If you are over 18, you are still welcome but sack lunches are just $3.) Just show up to a participating site between the designated times! Star party

    RAYMOND On Aug. 2 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., all ages are invited to Raymond Timberland Library for their star party. All lovers of the night sky should join in a session of fascinating astronomy activities. Attendees will use glow-in-the-dark paint to create their own star chart for tracking the constellations, discover a star sign, make an astrolabe, simulate a black hole, and make a miniature simulation of the expansion of the universe. Managing chronic illnesses

    ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. This series of classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., through Aug. 16. Space is limited. The goal of the program is to help participants live a healthy life by managing symptoms. Jakes Birthday Celebration

    LONG BEACH The Annual 75th Birthday Party for Jake The Alligator Man will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 3 and Saturday, Aug. 4, in Long Beach. Race Against Violence

    LONG BEACH The third annual Race Against Violence is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4 at    10 a.m. Created as way to honor Lisa Bonney, the 5K run/walk is held to raise domestic awareness and raise funds for domestic violence support, resources and prevention education materials. Entry fees are $27, and $17 without the T-shirt. Beach bike run

    LONG BEACH  The city of Long Beach and the Long Beach Elks will host the Veterans Beach Bike Run on Saturday, Aug. 4, starting at noon at 110 N. Pacific Highway in Long Beach.     OYSTERVILLE The Vesper service for 3 p.m., Aug. 5 at the historic Oysterville church includes Rev. D. J. Maddux, associate priest of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Olympia, presiding over the gathering. Music will be provided by the Randal Bays Family, who are Irish musicians. Suzanne Knutzen will play the pump organ. Sydney Stevens will provide the Oysterville moment. All are welcome to this casual, uplifting get together.

PAPA presents Into The Woods

    CHINOOK The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) continues performances of the musical Into the Woods at Fort Columbia Theater through Aug. 5. Curtain times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Because of an agreement with the Washington State Parks, no Discover Pass is required to attend the show. Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $5 for children 15 and under. The characters will leave you laughing out loud, fighting back tears and, quite possibly transformed by the experience of attending this wonderful, whimsical musical! Red Cross Emergency Services

    ROSBURG  On Monday, Aug. 6 Red Cross Emergency Services is conducting a training from     9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Rosburg Community Center. The classes will be shelter operations and shelter simulation. Local citizens interested in participating should email kelly.anderson@redcross.org

Hunter education course

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Police Department will conduct a Hunter Education Course from Aug. 6 through Aug. 11. The class is free. To participate in the class you must register before the class. CERT training

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a 10-week training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This free training runs every Tuesday through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to       9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue. Arts & Craft Auction

    NASELLE There will be a sidewalk arts and craft auction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 11 at the Appelo Archive Center, located at 1056 SR-4 in Naselle. The preview of items begins at 10 a.m., the live and silent auction start at 11 a.m., and the silent auction closes at        4 p.m. Refreshments will be available. The Archives Center has received amazing pieces of art to be showcased at the auction.  There will be three ways to bid: a live auction, a silent auction and a select group of items that will be listed on the centers Facebook page at www.facebook.com/appeloarchives. This event is being held to increase awareness of the talents in the local area and to raise financial support for the Appelo Archive Centers projects. The Center is still seeking donations, so contact the office if you have an item (or items) you would like to donate for the auction.  Items such as baked goods, books, paintings, knitted and crocheted items, woodcarvings and sculpted pieces are but examples of the items the Center hopes to receive.

Wildlife membership barbecue

    ILWACO On Saturday, Aug. 11, the Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will host their annual membership appreciation barbecue. The barbecue will be at the Refuge Headquarters on Highway 101 near mile marker 24 and begins at 1:30 p.m.  Members are also invited to participate in a trip to Long Island for a short hike to the old growth cedar grove.  The trip to Long Island leaves at 9 a.m.  It will return by 1 p.m. The trip is limited to the first 100 members to sign up, so be sure to RSVP with Nancy at secretary@friendsofwillaparefuge.org by Aug. 5. Soccer workshop

    OCEAN PARK Youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to learn the basics of futbol at a workshop hosted by New York youth soccer coach Sashamani Francois.     PENINSULA  The Long Beach Peninsula Edible Gardens Tour will take place Sunday, Aug. 12 from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are available at Adelaides Books in Ocean Park, Jimella and Nancis Seafood Market Café in Klipsan, Planter Box Nursery in Long Beach, The English Garden Nursery in Seaview and at participating gardens during the tour. Patriotic pops concert

    CHINOOK The Columbia River Symphony will perform a patriotic pops concert at the Chinook School Gym beginning at       7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the Chinook School Gym. I.H.S. Class of 1962

    LONG BEACH  The Ilwaco High School graduating class of 1962 is holding their 50th reunion on beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Cove Restaurant at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The cost is $32 per person, which includes the rent of the restaurant which will be closed to the public during the event; appetizers, dinner and dessert, tax and tip. Slow-Pitch ball

    SOUTH BEND Softball teams are invited to play in a slow-pitch, wood bat softball tournament on Labor Day weekend. From Aug. 31 through Sept. 2, South Bend will host Wood on the Willapa, an eight-team tournament to benefit Willapa Harbor Helping Hands and the Labor Day fireworks fund. The tournament structure is as follows: Friday evening and Saturday will be Round Robin play; Sunday is tournament play; four games guaranteed; $225 per team (13 player limit); bats and balls provided; championship T-shirts provided and participation is limited to first eight teams paid in full. Teams will play at the South Bend Community Park. The tournament is sponsored by Top Notch Tavern, Health Pros NW, Chester Club and Oyster Bar, Buds Lumber and Electric, Dennis Company and Pioneer Grocery.
