Jeff Evans Magic

Japanese Gyotaku printing

    OCEAN PARK On July 19 and July 20 at Bay Avenue Gallery in Ocean Park, Portland artist Sharron Huffman, a specialist in Japanese Gyotaku (fish) printing and a relief printmaker will be on hand for the reception and an artist demonstration. Sharron specializes in nature printing using the actual organism (fish, fern, octopus) to create the image. There will be an artist reception and lecture on Thursday, July 19 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and an artist demonstration on Friday, July 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The public is welcome. Nature drawing workshop

    ILWACO  On Thursday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Joanne Jambor will lead a nature drawing workshop at the Refuge Headquarters on Willapa Bay. Joanne is a professional artist, a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and she designed the metal animal cutout sculptures in Raymond. Everyone is invited to attend even if you have no experience this is more about learning to observe and enjoy nature than learning how to draw perfectly. Gardening chat

    OCEAN PARK The public is invited to the next gardening chat at the Ocean Park library community room on July 19 at 2 p.m. The topic for this meeting is water management in a summer garden, as well as a discussion about plans for the Edible Garden Tour scheduled for Aug. 12. Managing chronic illnesses

    ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. This series of classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., through Aug. 16. Space is limited. Ocean Beach Hospital in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging (O3A) has scheduled a free workshop open to the public for six consecutive Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ocean Beach Hospital meeting room, 174 1st Avenue N., Ilwaco. Stanford Universitys Chronic Disease-Self Management Program developed all of the materials. Each participant will have access to a Living Well With Chronic Conditions book. The goal of the program is to help participants live a healthy life by managing symptoms. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Disaster relief

    ILWACO On Thursday, July 19, a disaster relief truck will come to the Green Dragonfly thrift store at 107 Lake Street in Ilwaco between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The truck will be there to pick up used and useful household item donations, which will be delivered to those affected by the fires in Colorado.

Summer Art Festival

    LONG BEACH Peninsula Arts Association (PAA) is holding their 5th Summer Art Festival on July 20, July 21 and July 22 at the World Kite Museum on Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach. A fun, bright and diverse group of PAA artists provide a celebration of art with their creative wares. This is a great place to find one-of-a-kind vacation mementos, beach home art and decor, beautiful jewelry and more. Everything is handcrafted or artist inspired. PAPA presents Into The Woods

    CHINOOK The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) is pleased to announce that the musical Into the Woods will be performed at Fort Columbia Theater through Aug. 5. Curtain times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Because of an agreement with the Washington State Parks, no Discover Pass is required to attend the show.  Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $5 for children 15 and under. The characters will leave you laughing out loud, fighting back tears and, quite possibly, transformed by the experience of attending this wonderful, whimsical musical! Farmers Market

    LONG BEACH Columbia Pacific Farmers Market is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., every Friday in downtown Long Beach. Come check out the wide variety of homegrown foods and flowers, and the onsite prepared goodies.  There will also be music and lots of fun so come downtown and enjoy.

Music In The Gardens

    LONG BEACH  Enjoy the lovely gardens of the Long Beach Peninsula during the upcoming Music in the Gardens event to be held Saturday, July 21. The self-guided tour runs from      10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets available for $15 per person. Treat yourself to a visual feast as you tour the seven beautiful gardens on both the bay front and ocean front; properties include the Leadbetter Farm. While you stroll through the gardens, listen to live music performed by local musicians. Some gardens will have recorded music playing of artists to be featured at this years Jazz and Oysters event in August and the Water Music Festival in October.     ILWACO The Painted Lady Lavender Farm at 1664 Highway 101 S., in Ilwaco is hosting a concert with Kim Angelis on Sunday, July 22 beginning at 3 p.m. This gypsy style music will get your heart racing and your foot tapping. CERT training

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a 10-week training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This free training runs every Tuesday through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to     9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue. SandSations & City SandSations

    LONG BEACH  The annual SandSations sand sculptor contest is coming July 25 through July 29. Professional sand sculptors will build in downtown Long Beach for three days, followed by the traditional contest on the Bolstad beach approach on Saturday. There will be free sand castle building lessons on Friday and Saturday, plus a Sand Flea Pet Parade on Saturday.

Finn Fest Golf Tourney

    LONG BEACH  In conjunction with the upcoming 16th Biennial Finnish-American Folk Festival in Naselle, a golf tournament is scheduled for Thursday, July 26 at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The event begins with a wonderful lunch, at noon, prepared by Sondra and her crew, in the new clubhouse. The golf scramble is open for all and will tee off about 1 p.m.  Cost is only $45 and you can register by calling Dave Leeland at 484-3277 or Mike Swanson 751-1565.

Bowling meeting

    ILWACO On Thursday, July 26, at 7 p.m., there will be a Greater Peninsula USBC General Membership meeting at Hilltop Bowl in Ilwaco. After a short meeting to elect new officers there will be a   9-Pin no-tap mini-tournament. The cost is $6. Please come to the meeting and be a part of this association! Rodeo time!

    LONG BEACH The 67th NPRA rodeo is scheduled for July 27 through July 29 at the Peninsula Saddle Club grounds on Sandridge Road. The sounds of galloping horses and anxious steer, dusty air, and numerous sightings of cowboy hats, jean short-shorts and weathered wranglers can only mean one thing: the rodeo is back in town. The festivities will kick-off with a rodeo parade through downtown Long Beach at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, July 27. Start off each day of the rodeo right with a hearty, cattle ranch worthy meal at the Cowboy Breakfast, held at the clubhouse on the rodeo grounds Saturday and Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Peruse a variety of vendors and then take your seats for the rodeo events that start each day at 1 p.m. Lee Daggett will return as rodeo announcer. Come see some top-notch cowboys and cowgirls compete in the full range of events including, bareback, saddle bronc, breakaway roping, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. Finnish-American Festival

     NASELLE  The bi-annual Finn-Fest is set for July 27 through July 29 at the school in Naselle. Come see folks in Scandinavian costumes, hear cultural music and historical presentations, enjoy the boot toss, wife carry, Maypole dance and more much. Plus there will a wonderful variety of foods, flower and even dance demonstrations.

Ilwaco Tuna Classic

     ILWACO  Two full days of fishing will be enjoyed during the annual Ilwaco Tuna Classic. Bigger and better than ever this year, the fishing will be held on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28, with more festivities on Sunday, July 29 at the Port of Ilwaco. Registration ends July 22. Register today to secure your spot. The Ilwaco Tuna Classic fishing begins on Friday and continues through Saturday. Sunday will feature a wrap-up event with official weigh-in, vendor booths, huge barbecue, raffle, auction and final results announced.  There will also be a scavenger hunt on Saturday for those not fishing, so bring your family. Participate in the Ilwaco Tuna Classic for the fishing fun and help out our coastal communities with your tuna food bank donations.  

Woodfest at the marina

    TOKELAND  The Tokeland-North Cove Chamber of Commerce is happy to host the 5th annual Woodfest at the Marina in Tokeland on Saturday, July 28 and Sunday July 29 from       10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. There will be live music, chainsaw carvers, food booths and, a first this year, a beer garden. All things wooden, with other artist and crafters participating, will be available. Rodeo Hoedown

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks Lodge is hosting a rodeo hoedown with line dancing, country music, food and bar on Saturday, July 28, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. There is a $5 entry fee. Waikiki Beach concert

    ILWACO At 7 p.m., on July 28, the public is invited to Cape Disappointment State Parks Waikiki Beach for a concert by the band The Holiday Friends. This group features local talent playing great rock music. Bring a lawn chair and other personal comforts and sit back and enjoy some great music at this free outdoor concert. Jakes Birthday Celebration

    LONG BEACH The Annual 75th Birthday Party for Jake The Alligator Man will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 3 and Saturday, Aug. 4, in Long Beach. This wildly popular Long Beach Peninsula event features fun and activities for all. On Friday evening, enjoy an evening of burlesque and live music with Vincent Drambuie emceeing. Race Against Violence

    LONG BEACH The third annual Race Against Violence is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. Created as way to honor Lisa Bonney, the 5K run/walk is held to raise domestic awareness and raise funds for domestic violence support, resources and prevention education materials. Entry fees are $22 to receive an event T-shirt ($27 after the July 22 deadline), and $12 without the T-shirt ($17 after July 22). Hunter education course

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Police Department will conduct a Hunter Education Course from Aug. 6 through Aug. 11. The class is free. To participate in the class you must register before the class. Soccer workshop

    OCEAN PARK Youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to learn the basics of futbol at a workshop hosted by New York youth soccer coach Sashamani Francois. From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12, Francois will teach new futbol techniques at Ocean Park Elementary. The fee to participate is $25 per day or $40 for both days. I.H.S. Class of 1962

    LONG BEACH  The Ilwaco High School graduating class of 1962 is holding their 50th reunion on beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Cove Restaurant at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The cost is $32 per person, which includes the rent of the restaurant which will be closed to the public during the event; appetizers, dinner and dessert, tax and tip.
