Play auditions

Birders meet

    OCEAN PARK  Shoalwater Birders will meet Wednesday, July 11, at 7 p.m., in the meeting room of the Ocean Park Library at 1308 256th Place. The guest speaker will be Prof. John Marzluff, professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington. He and his wife, Colleen, will talk about their book Dog Days, Raven Nights, which is about ravens, sled dogs, and science. Commissioner candidate forum

    KLIPSAN  The public is invited to meet the county commissioner candidates at an open forum on July 12, at 7 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center, located at 21603 Pacific Highway in Klipsan. The Willapacific Chapter of the AAUW, American Association of University Women, will host the issues forum. Candidates for commissioner position one are Warren Cowell, Bill Herman, Scott McDougall and Steve Rogers. Managing chronic illnesses

    ILWACO Teaching individuals to take charge and manage their chronic illnesses in partnership with their physicians is the focus of the upcoming workshops at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. This series of classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting July 12 and running through Aug. 16. Space is limited. Ocean Beach Hospital in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging (O3A) has scheduled a free workshop open to the public for six consecutive Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ocean Beach Hospital meeting room, 174 1st Avenue N., Ilwaco. Stanford Universitys Chronic Disease-Self Management Program developed all of the materials. Each participant will have access to a Living Well With Chronic Conditions book. The goal of the program is to help participants live a healthy life by managing symptoms. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Transits quarterly board meeting

    LONG BEACH  The Pacific Transit Authority Board will hold its regular quarterly meeting at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 12. The meeting will be held at the Pacific County Office Buildings meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Two public hearings will be on the agenda: one on the 7-Year Transportation Development Plan and 2011 Annual Report; the other to amend the 2012 Capital Budget.  The public is invited to come and be heard.

PAPA presents Into The Woods

    CHINOOK The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists (PAPA) is pleased to announce its summer musical Into the Woods will be performed at the Fort Columbia Theater beginning July 13 and ending Aug. 5. Curtain times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Because of an agreement with the Washington State Parks, no Discover Pass is required to attend the show.  Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $5 for children 15 and under. The characters will leave you laughing out loud, fighting back tears and, quite possibly, transformed by the experience of attending this wonderful, whimsical musical! Art around town

    PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association members are showing artwork at the Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco.  There are paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylics, as well as collage, pastels and photography. All artwork is framed, signed and most are for sale. At the Ilwaco library, pastels by Joyce Wingett and photography by Nancy Meyrick are on display also with most for sale. There are a wide variety of subjects at both venues that everyone will enjoy.

Clamshell Railroad Days

    LONG BEACH  The Peninsula Model Railroad Club is hosting a model railroad show and swap meet at the Long Beach Grange Hall at 5715 Sandridge Road on July 14 and July 15 in conjunction with Clamshell Railroad Days at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. In addition to operating visiting club layouts (including some as far away as Seattle), theres a popular Thomas the Train layout that the kids can operate themselves, a Lionel toy train layout, and many other displays in the spacious halls (both floors). There will also be modular narrow gauge layout, which was a crowd-pleasing attraction at the Portland show earlier this year. The entire first floor of the Grange hall is filled with model railroad and equipment vendors. Inexpensive snacks and beverages will be available all day long. On Saturday night, starting at 6 p.m., a special tri-tip dinner with all the fixings will be served at the Grange with attendees, visiting club members, and the public invited. The price is $10 per person. The events are open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 (good for both days and both locations) with children under 12 free.  Theres family fun for kids of all ages.

Waikiki beach concert

    CAPE D  On July 14 at 7 p.m., the public is invited to the next concert at Waikiki Beach in Cape Disappointment State Park. The featured entertainers are the Winterlings, an innovative folk music duo from Port Angeles. There is no cost for the concert, but a Discover Pass is required to enter the park. Poet & Essayist

    NASELLE Gary Anderson, Pacific Northwest folk poet, and Nick Nikkila, essayist, will present An Evening of Spoken Word on Saturday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m., at the Deep River Legion Hall. Gary published, My Finnish Soul in 2010.  His latest book, Bunchgrass and Buttercups The Deep River Suite, was published in 2012.  Nick writes about his experiences while also growing up in Deep River. His book of essays, A Collection of Recollections, was also published this year.  All three books will be available that evening. In addition, Steve Ullakko, Naselle woodworking artist, will sell his wooden cooling racks and other items. Light refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge.  Take either the West or East Deep River dike road off SR-4 and follow the signs to the legion hall.

Northwest Life

    SKAMOKAWA  Redmen Hall will be starting their summer season with an exhibit of work by four members of the Lower Columbian Artists Association. The  exhibit of paintings by these four is titled Art from a Northwest Life, featuring these artists visions of our beautiful Pacific  Northwest. They are Mitzi Christensen, Alan Brunk, Nancy Knowles and  Ramona Lauzon all well known artists in this area. They are a lovely introduction to the season when we all start to look anew at the beauty around us and we are proud to have such excellent guides to our summer awakening. The exhibit runs through Aug. 12 and there will be a reception for the artists on Sunday,  July 8 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The hall is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Redmen Hall is located in beautiful downtown Skamokawa at 1394 SR-4.     ILWACO Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco is open every Saturday, rain or shine, all summer long from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down and shop for farm fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, plants, flowers and all manner of seafood, or just enjoy a stroll along the waterfront in Ilwaco.

Summerfest

    LONG BEACH Come to downtown Long Beach and enjoy free horse and wagon rides around town, performances by the Beards Hollow Pirates, a sidewalk chalk art contest and kids will enjoy the fire safety information along with a visit from Smokey Bear. Plus on Saturday and Sunday there will be music by Richie Bean and the Catillacs.

Cribbage

    OYSTERVILLE The Vesper service for 3 p.m., July 15 at the historic Oysterville church includes Pastor Adrienne Strehlow of the Ocean Park Lutheran Church presiding over the gathering. CERT training

    LONG BEACH The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is hosting a 10-week training course for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This free training runs every Tuesday through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pacific County Administration Building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Participants are not required to attend all courses, though complete attendance is required to graduate from the program. Courses include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster triage, disaster medical, victim search, rescue organizations, team organization, disaster psychology and animal rescue. Music In The Gardens

    LONG BEACH  Enjoy the lovely gardens of the Long Beach Peninsula during the upcoming Music in the Gardens event to be held Saturday, July 21. The self-guided tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets available for $15 per person. Treat yourself to a visual feast as you tour the seven beautiful gardens. On both the bay front and ocean front properties include the Leadbetter Farm. While you stroll through the gardens, listen to live music performed by local musicians. Some gardens will have recorded music playing of artists to be featured at this years Jazz and Oysters event in August and the Water Music Festival in October. SandSations & City SandSations

    LONG BEACH  The annual SandSations sand sculpture contest is coming July 25 through July 29. Professional sand sculptors will build in downtown Long Beach for three days, followed by the traditional contest on the Bolstad beach approach on Saturday. There will be free sand castle building lessons on Friday and Saturday. Plus a Sand Flea Pet Parade on Saturday.

Rodeo time!

    LONG BEACH The 67th NPRA rodeo is scheduled for July 27 through July 29 at the Peninsula Saddle Club grounds on Sandridge Road. The sounds of galloping horses and anxious steer, dusty air, and numerous sightings of cowboy hats, jean short-shorts and weathered wranglers can only mean one thing: the rodeo is back in town. The festivities will kick-off with a rodeo parade through downtown Long Beach at 6:30 p.m., on Friday night, July 27. Start off each day of the rodeo right with a hearty, cattle ranch worthy meal at the Cowboy Breakfast, held at the clubhouse on the rodeo grounds Saturday and Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

    Peruse a variety of vendors and then take your seats for the rodeo events that start each day at 1 p.m. Lee Daggett will return as rodeo announcer. Come see some top-notch cowboys and cowgirls compete in the full range of events including, bareback, saddle bronc, breakaway roping, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. Ilwaco Tuna Classic

     ILWACO  Two full days of fishing will be enjoyed during the annual Ilwaco Tuna Classic. Bigger and better than ever this year, the fishing will be held on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28, with more festivities on Sunday, July 29 at the Port of Ilwaco. The Ilwaco Tuna Classic fishing begins on Friday and continues through Saturday. Sunday will feature a wrap-up event with official weigh-in, vendor booths, huge barbecue, raffle, auction and final results announced.  There will also be a scavenger hunt on Saturday for those not fishing, so bring your family. You are invited to join the cause by participating in the Ilwaco Tuna Classic and registration ends July 22. Register today to secure your spot. Participate in the Ilwaco Tuna Classic for the fishing fun and help out our coastal communities with your tuna food bank donations.  

Rodeo Hoedown

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks Lodge is hosting a rodeo hoedown with line dancing, country music, food and bar on Saturday, July 28, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. There is a $5 entry fee. Race Against Violence

    LONG BEACH The third annual Race Against Violence is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. Created as way to honor Lisa Bonney, the 5K run/walk is held to raise domestic awareness and raise funds for domestic violence support, resources and prevention education materials. Entry fees are $22 to receive an event T-shirt ($27 after the July 22 deadline), and $12 without the T-shirt ($17 after July 22). Hunter education course

    LONG BEACH The Long Beach Police Department will conduct a Hunter Education Course from Aug. 6 through Aug. 11. The class is free. To participate in the class you must register before the class. Soccer workshop

    OCEAN PARK Youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to learn the basics of futbol at a workshop hosted by New York youth soccer coach Sashamani Francois. I.H.S. Class of 1962

    LONG BEACH  The Ilwaco High School graduating class of 1962 is holding their 50th reunion on beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Cove Restaurant at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The cost is $32 per person, which includes the rent of the restaurant which will be closed to the public during the event; appetizers, dinner and dessert, tax and tip.
