The survivor of a crash on the Astoria Bridge Wednesday morning is still in serious condition at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland today.
Meanwhile, Oregon State Police troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the two-vehicle traffic crash that killed Nolan Neal Benson, 27, of Long Beach.
Bensons by the Beach, a Long Beach cafe, is owned by his family.
Sgt. Andrew Merila said at 5:25 a.m., a 2003 Hyundai four-door, driven by Benson, was northbound on the U.S. Highway 101 Astoria Bridge when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2003 Toyota pickup truck driven by Chris Levno, 57, of Kelso.
After the impact, the pickup came to rest on the guardrail with Levno trapped inside.
The Hyundai stopped in the traffic lane.
Levno was freed from the truck after more than an hour, then was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to Legacy Emanuel with serious injuries. Benson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both drivers were using safety restraints, troopers said.
Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Astoria Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Astoria Fire Department, Medix Ambulance and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene. The highway was closed until 9 a.m.
