Enter Grange Contest

    LONG BEACH Washington State Grange and the Pomona District, consisting of the Long Beach, Grays River and Skamokawa granges, invite the public to enter their upcoming competition. There are a variety of categories for entries including: photography, needlework (crochet, knit, tat, embroidery, cross stitch, latch hook and more), quilts, sewing contests, baking (bread, cakes, bookies, bars, diabetic foods), canning and many more. This is a fun opportunity to show off your handwork and skills in a friendly environment. Grange membership is not required. Entries will be accepted at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road, on April 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Winners will go on to state competition. All entries will be returned except baked goods, which will be auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting the Pomona District. Grief support

Food bank openings

    OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Food Bank has a few volunteer openings.  Volunteers are needed help on the first Wednesdays of each month to move cases of food around following our monthly delivery.  In addition a few people are needed as occasional back-up help distributing food during business hours. Diabetes support group

    KLIPSAN The next diabetes support group meeting of Ocean Beach Hospital will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., on April 18. The theme, Explore the Real Reasons for Over Eating will be presented by Deanna Duret, MA/RD/LD, CDE at Anchor Baptist Mission at 16814 Hwy 103 and Pacific Way (midway on Peninsula south of Klipsan Beach).     OCEAN PARK The public is welcome to come by and join in the informal gardening chat at the Ocean Park Library community room the third Thursday of the month at 2 p.m. April 19 the topic will be April showers and what you can do about watering your gardens when they end. Toastmasters

    ILWACO  Ilwaco Toastmasters group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., the first and third and fifth Thursdays of each month at the Ilwaco Community Building.     LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners is at 5 p.m. intermediate dancing starts at 6 p.m.; and couples hit the floor at 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. FOOP Auction

    OCEAN PARK The Friends of Ocean Park School are excited to invite you to participate in their third annual online auction.  This fundraising event will benefit the students of Ocean Park Elementary by providing them with enrichment activities and supplemental learning opportunities. IHS Talent Show

    ILWACO  To fulfill his senior project requirement, Daniel Lopez is producing a talent showcase fundraiser for Rachels Challenge on April 20 at 7 p.m., at Hilltop School gymnasium. The fundraiser is by donation only, admission is free. Students and alumni of Ilwaco High School will perform in a variety of talent genres. Come and see what our performers have been doing with their spare time, youll be surprised and impressed!

Pinochle

Relay Fundraiser

    OCEAN PARAK On Friday, April 20 at 5 p.m. at the Moose Lodge located at 25915 U Street in Ocean Park, there will be a lasagna dinner that includes a Caeser salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverage all for only $8. Proceeds to benefit the Long Beach Peninsula Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society.

    PENINSULA The Grass Roots Garbage Gang is calling all volunteers for the upcoming spring beach cleanup. Kicking things off on Friday, April 20, is a potluck supper at the Peninsula Baptist Church in Klipsan, where Professor Debbie Duffield from Portland State University will be discussing all things whales. The supper is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Professor Duffield will speak from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The clean up starts at     9:30 a.m., on Saturday, April 21. Head to any major beach approach and sign in, get supplies and head for the beach! There will be free chowder after the event for everyone who helped. Bunco for Breast Cancer

    KLIPSAN The fourth annual Bunco for Breast Cancer Tournament put on by the Peninsula Bunco Club is set for April 21 at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. There will be two tournaments  one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., each preceeded by a half-hour viewing time so you can scope out the prizes and offerings. Everyone is welcome to come to both tournaments. Additionally there will be stuffed baked potatoes available for purchase from the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. The admission fee of $11 is a $10 contribution to the fundraiser, plus $1 to PSAC for use of the facility. The food proceeds go to the PSAC as well, so attendees are supporting two important, local, non-profit groups. And, your $10 admission fee comes right back as a coupon from 42nd Street Cafe!  You play for free, and can look forward to another meal at one of the Peninsulas nicest restaurants. Food4Kids fundraiser

    SEAVIEW The public is encouraged to participate in a fundraiser for the Food4Kids backpack program in conjunction with the Shelburne Inn on Sunday, April 22. The Shelburne will provide a special meal at cost and all remaining proceeds will be credited as a donation to the backpack program. The three-course meal is $50 and includes soup or salad, pork loin roast with antique orchard apples, coconut rice pudding with huckleberry jam plus coffee, tea and soda included. Archery meeting

    OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Saturday, April 21 through Monday, April 23, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Wind in the Willows

    OCEAN PARK Wind in the Willows, based on the famous series by Kenneth Grahame, will be presented at 3 p.m., on April 22 at the Ocean Park Methodist Church. Featuring a cast of local singers accompanied by Barbara Poulshock, the short musical will have both adults and older children laughing at the wild antics of the famous toad. Money Smart Week

    PACIFIC COUNTY Timberland Regional Library is hosting Money Smart Week, a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances through access to help, free educational seminars and activities. The TRL workshops include: Financial Independence: Eight Steps to Entrepreneurship on Tuesday, April 24 at noon at Raymond Timberland Library st 507 Duryea Street; at 4 p.m. at Ilwaco Timberland Library, 158 1st Ave. N.; and at 6 p.m., at Naselle Timberland Library at 4 Parpala Road. Art show

    ILWACO  Ilwaco High School art department is holding their annual art show, highlighting work from beginning up through advanced, freshmen through seniors. Viewers of the show will have the opportunity to vote for the Peoples Choice award in two categories: Two-dimensional artwork, and three-dimensional artwork. The show will run through April 29 in the main gallery at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and they are closed Mondays.

Relay For Life meeting

    LONG BEACH The next planning meeting for the Long Beach Peninsula Relay for Life is set for 6 p.m., April 24, at the Chautauqua Lodge. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser

    LONG BEACH On Tuesday, April 24, the Lost Roo, located at 1700 South Pacific Way, is donating a spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser for the Grass Roots Garbage Gang. The event, which runs from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., will include a silent auction and raffle. Donated items include a tour of Leadbetter Farms, an airboat ride, eagle watching river boat ride, original art, a seafood dinner for 10 and much more. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10. No reservations required. All proceeds go to the Grass Roots Gang.

Re-Purpose Workshop

    NASELLE Naselle Timberland Library presents The RePurpose Workshop from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., on April 24 for all ages. Alice in Wonderland Jr.

    NASELLE The Naselle High School drama club is putting on another musical production directed by Barb Swanson. This year it is Walt Disneys Alice in Wonderland, Jr., based on the 1951 Disney version of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. There are 40 cast members from Naselle schools in grades six through      12 including Alice, the Cheshire cat, the white rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March hare, the Queen of Hearts, the King of Hearts, the caterpillar, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Performance dates are April 27, April 28 and April 29 and May 5 and May 6. Fishing derby

    ILWACO  The 20th Annual Black Lake Fishing Derby is set for April 28 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration and a free pancake breakfast begins at 7 a.m., the last registration will be accepted at 9:45 a.m., and the final fish weigh-in is at 9:45 a.m. Awards and prizes will be distributed at     10:30 a.m., followed by hot dogs and sodas at 11 a.m. Register online at www.ilwaco-wa.gov or call 642-3145.

Cruise Reunion Car Show

    WARRENTON  The Lower Columbia Classic Car Club is hosting the 50s Cruise Reunion Car Show on Saturday, April 28 at Camp Rilea in Warrenton. The show starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. The cost is $2 per person, with children age 12 and under admitted free with an adult. All military personnel can attend free. There will be more than 200 classic vehicles on hand, including three historic Mack fire engines. Everyone is welcome.

English Tea & Plant Sale

    CATHLAMET  An exhibition of antique and heirloom items relating to tea will be a special feature of the 4th annual English Tea and Plant Sale to be held at St. James Family Center at 1134 Columbia Street in Cathlamet on April 28. Tea service begins at noon and ends at 3:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased by calling 795-8612. Five beautiful baskets with themes such as Kitchen Kaboodie, Tea for Company, Serenity Spa, Butterflies-Birds-Blooms and Summer Afternoon will be raffled off. Tickets for the raffle baskets are $1 each. The plant sale will include a variety of indoor and outdoor palnts. A master gardener will be on hand to answer questions. All proceeds from this event go to help support various programs at St. James.

Priscilla Circle Salad Luncheon

    NASELLE Saturday, April 28 is the date for the annual salad luncheon at the Naselle Lutheran Church located at 308 Old Knappton Road in Naselle, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Priscilla Circle will once again offer an array of salads for your enjoyment with a donation of $7. The Lutheran bakers will have a variety of goods to offer including Finnish delicacies.  Quilts and a number of handcrafted items have been promised for the craft room.  Alfred Simukka has been busy tending to over 400 tomato plants for the gardener. Loyalty Days

    PENINSULA On Saturday, May 5, there will be a kids parade in downtown Ilwaco starting at noon. Come watch the parade, then enjoy the blessing of the fleet from the Port of Ilwaco at 1 p.m. The Long Beach Elks Club is serving an oyster feed from noon to 5 p.m., and finally the honor banquet takes place at 7 p.m., at the Elks Lodge. Then on Sunday, May 6, a cowboy breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Peninsula Saddle Club. There will be fire truck rides for kids from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Ilwaco Fire Hall. And finally the main parade starts at 1 p.m., in Long Beach with the Coast Guard fly over. This is a great community weekend for all to enjoy.

Spring tea & luncheon

    ROSBURG On Sunday, May 6, the Grays River Friendship Circle will hold its 10th anniversary Spring Tea and Luncheon. This is a change in date, as the tea is usually held on a Sunday later in the month. It will be held at the Rosburg Community Hall off Highway 4. The theme this year is, Even Some Cowboys Drink Tea. Homespun entertainment of music and poetry will be provided by Joel and Noreen Fitts of Grays River. Women of the Grays River United Methodist Church sponsor this event as a fundraiser for the Friendship Circles special projects. The suggested donation is $8 each at the door. Doors open at noon. The luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. with the program to follow. This event attracts people from far and near to visit with old and new friends, enjoy an exciting program, and explore a table full of raffle prizes to be chosen later by the winners. Raffle tickets are only a $1 each. A special raffle will be held for a beautiful silver, semi-precious stone necklace. The luncheon consists of tea savories, delicacies and desserts. Ducks Unlimited banquet

    ASTORIA  The North Coast Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Committee is starting preparations for the 35th Annual Fundraising Banquet scheduled for Saturday, May 12, at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. This is a month or two later than the usual banquet date to reduce conflicts with other local hunter or conservation group fundraisers. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Ducks Unlimiteds efforts in the conservation and restoration of wetlands and related benefits to wildlife and fisheries. New committee members would be most welcome  contact George Baker at 505-325-7960  as would members of the Long Beach Peninsula DU Chapter. You would need to pay only the $25 dinner cost. Regular ticket price is $45 and tickets are available from Jennifer Biamont at 503-738-5580. Currently a limited number of $20 raffle tickets for a Kimber 300 Win Mag are available at Links Outdoors in Astoria or from committee members.  More details on the May 12 event will be available soon.

Garlic Festival seeks local vendors

    OCEAN PARK The Northwest Garlic Festival is looking to shake things up a bit. Known over the years for everything garlic (including ice cream), the festival planners are working to increase another aspect of the event local seafood cuisine and hand crafted merchandise. The 2012 Garlic Festival runs June 16 and June 17, and is located at Wilson Field, just two blocks south of Bay Avenue on Sandridge Road in Ocean Park.  Vendors and artisans may register for a booth through the OPACCs website, www.opwa.com, or by stopping in at the Chamber office Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., (1715 Bay Avenue, Ocean Park). A 10×10 site costs $100 for the two-day, outdoor event.  Sites with electricity run $125. There are discounts for multiple spaces and the deadline to register and pay is May 23, or until all spaces are filled. In order to participate in the annual festival, vendors and artisans are required to sell items inspired by garlic and are urged to keep the festival motto in mind, Its Chic to Reek. Because the festival limits the number of booths carrying similar merchandise, it is best to register early to guarantee a spot. Call For Art, Garlic Poster Contest

    OCEAN PARK  Peninsula Arts Association announces the opening of this years Northwest Garlic Festival Poster Contest. This is the third year PAA has run the poster contest for the Ocean Park Area Chamber event. The 31st NW Garlic Festival Poster will be a limited, signed edition of 100, packaged in a protective clear bag with a backing board and certificate of authenticity. The contest is open to the public with a cash prize of $150 (and two posters) awarded to the winning artist. Entry forms are available on PAAs website www.beachartist.org, or may be picked up at the OPA Chamber Office (1715 Bay Ave, Ocean Park), Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 pm. The deadline for entries is May 15. The winning artist must be available to sign printed posters before a June 8 reception for the poster reveal. This reception, held at Lighthouse Realty in Ocean Park, will be the first time collectors may purchase the hard to get, low numbered editions.  Complete contest information is available on PAAs website or by calling 665-6041. This years festival will be expanding participation from local seafood restaurants and artists are encouraged to keep this in mind when creating their entries.
