PENINSULA Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has approved the next clam dig for morning tides on Saturday, April 7, Sunday, April 8 and Monday, April 9. No digging will be allowed on any beach after noon. A valid 2012-13 fishing license is required.

PENINSULA The Ilwaco High School class of 2012 continues to sell flower bowls and baskets. Prices for hanging baskets are $28 each or two or more $25 each; 14-inch flower bowls are $20 each or $18 for two or more bowls. All proceeds benefit the Class of 2012 Substance Free Graduation Party. Plants will be available for pick up mid-May. Fish Preservation Workshop
ROSBURG An introduction to home pressure canning of fish will be held on April 9 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the kitchen of Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. The workshop will give a hands-on experience in which attendees will go home with a finished product. The class will be taught through the WSU Master Preservation Program and is limited to eight members. Other methods of seafood preservation information will also be available. A pressure gauge check for your home canner will also be held on April 9 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the same location. There is no cost for the workshop or gauge testing. Funding for this event is provided through a grant by the Wahkiakum Marine Resource Committee. Art show
ILWACO Ilwaco High School art department is hold their annual art show. This exhibit will show a range of work, from beginning work up through advanced, freshmen through seniors. This is a non-juried show; every art student was asked to contribute the piece they feel is their strongest from the 2011-12 school year, resulting in a show that demonstrates the variety of skill levels and interests of students. Viewers of the show will have the opportunity to vote for the Peoples Choice award in two categories: Two-dimensional artwork and three-dimensional artwork. The show will run through April 29 in the main gallery at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and they are closed Mondays. Please stop by and support IHS art!

Town Hall Meeting
ILWACO WellSpring will host a town hall meeting with the theme, Embracing Community Connection, on April 11 at the Ilwaco Middle/High School. The gathering will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a free meal. There will also be free childcare available. At 6:15 p.m., attendees will move to the auditorium for the keynote speaker. Ron Hertel from the Washington State Readiness to Learn and Compassionate School Initiative will share ideas and information with break-out sessions in the classrooms after the talk. Padme Grace will lead the bully busters program for elementary age youth and the Youth Empowerment Squad (YES) will offer a presentation for youth about social norms and perceptions.

OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2011 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2011), plus a copy of all 2010 tax records/return. The 99% Spring Action
OCEAN PARK There will be a 99% Spring Action training on Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Ocean Park Library community room. To prepare for the 99% Spring Action, groups from every corner of the movement are joining forces to do something that has never been tried before. During the week of April 9 through April 15, 100,000 people across America will be brought together for an unprecedented national movement-wide training on what has happened to our economy, and on the history of peaceful direct action. We can take direct action this spring to challenge corporate power, end tax giveaways for the 1 percent, and fight the influence of money in politics and more. History in the Mudbank
BAY CENTER The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is coordinating a public tour on the Niawiakum River to explore evidence of past tsunamis in the area. The tour will begin at 4 p.m., April 14, on the east side of the bridge near Nisbett Oyster Company off Highway 101. The tour will be led by Brian Atwater of the U.S. Geological Survey and co-author of The Orphan Tsunami of 1700. Rubber boots and other bay gear are advised. Finnish documentary
NAELLE The award winning Finnish documentary Steam of Life will be shown at the Appelo Archives Center at 1056 SR-4 in Naselle on Saturday, April 14, starting at noon. It has English subtitles, runs 56 minutes, and is suitable for high school students and adults. There is no admission. This event is a collaboration with the AAC and with Point of View, the independent nonfiction film series on PBS.
Legacy of Fishery
SKAMOKAWA The Friends of Skamokawa open a new exhibit, Legacy of the Columbia River Fishery, at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 14 at the River Life Interpretive Center, Redmen Hall, 1394 State Route 4 in Skamokawa. Funded by the Wahkiakum Marine Resources Committee, the exhibit examines the traditions of the Columbia River commercial fishery and Native American fisheries through photographs, salmon labels and text. Boatbuilding, traditional tools, fish processing and ethnic traditions are all featured on colorful panels containing original art by Keith Hoofnagle and text by author Irene Martin. The exhibit will run through May 6 at Redmen Hall and will then travel to various other venues.
Dirt!
RAYMOND Growing Together Community Gardens is celebrating spring and Earth Day with a community showing of Dirt! The Movie beginning at 2 p.m., on April 15 at the Raymond Theatre. This movie is an insightful and timely film that tells the story of the glorious and unappreciated material beneath our feet. Inspired by William Bryant Logans acclaimed book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, this movie takes a humorous and substantial look into the history and current state of the living organic matter that we come from and will later return to. LONG BEACH As part of her senior project, Devin Erickson has organized a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula. The dinner will begin at 4:30 p.m., on April 15 at the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dinner is $7 per plate and includes spaghetti with a choice of meat marinara or vegetarian, garlic bread and refreshments. All proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club. ASTORIA The April meeting of the Sunset Empire Orchid Society has been changed to Sunday, April 15, instead of the regular scheduled date of April 8. ILWACO The public is invited to a community brown bag meeting on April 16 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Columbia Education Center at 208 Advent Avenue, SE, in Ilwaco. A second meeting will be held on April 17 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Riverview Education Center in Raymond. The theme of these meetings is communicating changes in DSHS benefits. Bunco for Breast Cancer
KLIPSAN The fourth annual Bunco for Breast Cancer Tournament put on by the Peninsula Bunco Club is set for April 21 at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. There will be two tournaments one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., each preceeded by a half-hour viewing time so you can scope out the prizes and offerings. Everyone is welcome to come to both tournaments. Additionally there will be stuffed baked potatoes available for purchase from the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. The admission fee of $11 is a $10 contribution to the fundraiser, plus $1 to PSAC for use of the facility. The food proceeds go to the PSAC as well, so attendees are supporting two important, local, non-profit groups. And, your $10 admission fee comes right back as a coupon from 42nd Street Cafe! You play for free, and can look forward to another meal at one of the Peninsulas nicest restaurants. If possible it is best to R.S.V.P. your attendance for either the 3 p.m. or 7 p.m. games or both. ILWACO The 20th Annual Black Lake Fishing Derby is set for April 28 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration and a free pancake breakfast begins at 7 a.m., the last registration will be accepted at 9:45 a.m., and the final fish weigh-in is at 9:45 a.m. Awards and prizes will be distributed at 10:30 a.m., followed by hot dogs and sodas at 11 a.m. Register online at www.ilwaco-wa.gov or call 642-3145.

ROSBURG On Sunday, May 6, the Grays River Friendship Circle will hold its 10th anniversary Spring Tea and Luncheon. This is a change in date, as the tea is usually held on a Sunday later in the month. It will be held at the Rosburg Community Hall off Highway 4. The theme this year is, Even Some Cowboys Drink Tea. Homespun entertainment of music and poetry will be provided by Joel and Noreen Fitts of Grays River.
Women of the Grays River United Methodist Church sponsor this event as a fundraiser for the Friendship Circles special projects. The suggested donation is $8 each at the door. Doors open at noon. The luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. with the program to follow. This event attracts people from far and near to visit with old and new friends, enjoy an exciting program, and explore a table full of raffle prizes to be chosen later by the winners. Raffle tickets are only a $1 each. A special raffle will be held for a beautiful silver, semi-precious stone necklace donated by Joan Chester of Cathlamet. The luncheon consists of tea savories, delicacies, and desserts. Wear that outfit or hat that you seldom get to use just be comfortable in whatever you wish. Ducks Unlimited banquet
ASTORIA The North Coast Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Committee is starting preparations for the 35th Annual Fundraising Banquet scheduled for Saturday, May 12 at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. This is a month or two later than the usual banquet date to reduce conflicts with other local hunter or conservation group fundraisers. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Ducks Unlimiteds efforts in the conservation and restoration of wetlands and related benefits to wildlife and fisheries. New committee members would be most welcome contact George Baker at 505-325-7960 as would members of the Long Beach Peninsula DU Chapter. You would need to pay only the $25 dinner cost. Regular ticket price is $45 and tickets are available from Jennifer Biamont at 503-738-5580.
