PENINSULA The Ilwaco High School class of 2012 is now selling flower bowls and baskets. Prices for hanging baskets are $28 each or two or more $25 each; 14-inch flower bowls are $20 each or $18 for two or more bowls. All proceeds benefit the Class of 2012 Substance Free Grad Party! OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2011 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2011), plus a copy of all 2010 tax records/return. Coast Guard Auxiliary
CAPE D Attend a meeting of the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 62 and see what this organization is all about. They meet the first Wednesday of each month. This months meeting is March 7 at 7 p.m. They are the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard that supports the Coast Guard in nearly all of the services missions. Two of the groups purposes are safety of life upon navigable waters and the promotion of efficiency in the operation of pleasure craft. Anyone age 17 and older is welcome to join. SOUTH BEND On March 8 at 6 p.m., the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) has organized Lets Talk Tsunamis presentation to be held in the commissioners meeting room at 1216 W. The series provides information about what tsunamis are and how they function, tsunami evacuation, the tsunami warning system, tsunami history, local and distant tsunamis, hazard mitigation, and neighborhood and personal preparedness. Kindergarten Pre-registration
PENINSULA Kindergarten pre-registration is open for all Peninsula children who will be five years old on or before Aug. 31. Parents or guardians may pre-register your child at Ocean Park Elementary School or at Long Beach Elementary anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., during the month of March. Cranberry Road is the dividing line; children living north of Cranberry will attend Ocean Park School, and those south of Cranberry will attend Long Beach Elementary. A childs birth certificate and immunization record (copies or originals) are required but the child does not need to be at pre-registration. Bird Walk
LONGVIEW At 8 a.m., on Saturday, March 10, Longview Parks and Recreation Department is joining Willapa Hills Audubon Society in sponsoring a lake walk. Participants should meet at Hemlock Square near the playground at 8 a.m. Lake Sacajawea Park has a species list of 130 birds and is featured on the Great Washington Birding Trail. No prior signup necessary. Bring binoculars for better viewing, though the leader will provide views through a spotting scope, and be sure to dress for the weather. Fantasy to Fabric
ILWACO Well-known fabric designer and Long Beach Peninsula resident Karen Snyder will present a lecture on her creative process as part of the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museums annual meeting on Saturday March 10, at 115 SE Lake St., Ilwaco. Karen travels extensively through the United States speaking on quilt and fabric history. The museum is thrilled that she will be treating her home community to an inside look at her design process and its results. Tempest in a Teapot
LONG BEACH The American Association of University Women presents Treasures of Time, a historical afternoon theatre celebrating National Womens History Month. This year we will be featuring A Tempest in a Teapot, a representation of the use of tea and the women who served it throughout history. The tea will take place Saturday, March 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Tickets are $20 per person or $10 for children 12 years old and under and are available at Okies Thriftway and at Ocean Park Pharmacy or Long Beach Pharmacy, or by mailing a check to AAUW, P.O. PENINSULA Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced upcoming clam digs, pending marine toxin tests, on morning tides Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11. No digging will be allowed on any beach after noon. Additional digs are set for Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25.

Chinook gym dedication
CHINOOK The Friends of Chinook School and the Port of Chinook invite the public to the dedication of the restored Chinook School Gymnasium on Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m., a day that also marks the 90th anniversary of the first dedication in 1922. The gym is now available to the public for a wide range of programs, activities and events. The program will begin with remarks by individuals involved in the planning and construction of the restoration project. Recognition will be given to individuals, businesses, foundations and public agencies who have contributed to the projects success through hard work and financial support. Refreshments will be served following the program.

ASTORIA Sunset Empire Orchid Society meets at 2 p.m., March 11 at the First Lutheran Church at 725 33rd Street in Astoria. Their featured speaker will be Terry Aitken, of Aitkens Salmon Creek Garden in Vancouver, who will discuss Orchids, the Ultimate House Plant. Art show entries
LONG BEACH Entries are being accepted for Peninsula Arts Associations 21st Spring Art Show. The deadline to enter is March 13, and all participants must be current members of PAA. Twenty-three art show categories offer opportunities for artists of all media to exhibit and compete for ribbons at the popular and well respected exhibition, March 30 through April 1, at the World Kite Museum in Long Beach. PAA membership costs $20 per year. Art show entries are $5 each and are limited to three per adult artist. Students may also join the organization and enter art in the show. Student participation is free and limited to two entries. Quilt show
ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, located at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco, is hosting the 17th Annual Peninsula Quilt Guild Exhibition, set for Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, March 18 from noon to 4 p.m. The Peninsula Quilt Guild includes some of the areas most talented fabric artists. The exhibition includes quilts of all types and sizes and fills three galleries and is sponsored by the Peninsula Quilt Guild. Tickets for the prize quilt raffle will be available throughout the show at a cost of $1 per ticket. The drawing will be on Sunday afternoon and it is not necessary to be present to win. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to Peninsula charities.

Whales!
ASTORIA Come learn about whales! This hands-on day camp will be whale themed science and art education for children between the ages of 8 and 12. The camp will run Monday, March 26 through Thursday, March 29 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the 4-H Club House. The participants will have hands-on activities that include real whale bones! They will focus on scientific understanding of whales, the oceanic environment and some of the other animals students might see in the ocean. Topics include: What are whales, how are whales adapted to the ocean environment, what do they eat, and what challenges do they face. The participants will be investigating, sketching, and writing. This day camp is open to all youth but space is limited to 15. The cost is $25. For more information or to register, call the extension office at 503-325-8573.
Kids Stuff Sale
LONG BEACH From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, March 31 come to the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road for a special sale of kids stuff. Open to the public, attendees are welcome to come and sell your childrens items they no longer need or use, including clothing, toys, furnishings, books, etc. Sale items must be limited to children only items, no household garage sale items. The cost of table rental is $10 per 8-foot table. All of the proceeds from the table rentals will go towards sponsoring local kids to attend summer camp at Camp Morehead in Nahcotta. Lunch will be available in our onsite kitchen so invite your friends for the biggest kids only garage sale on the Peninsula! This event will take place quarterly at the Grange.
