ASTORIA On Feb. 8, Gabriel Thompson, the author of Working in the Shadows: A Year of Doing The Jobs (Most) Americans Wont Do, will be in Astoria to discuss his book. Thompson will be speaking at noon at Clatsop Community College in Columbia Hall, room 219, and, at 6:30 p.m. at the Liberty Theater in the McTavish Room. These events are free and everyone is invited. In 2008, Thompson, spent a year working undercover in several minimum-wage jobs in the lettuce fields of Arizona, a chicken processing plant in Alabama and delivering restaurant food on a bicycle in New York City. Thompsons book is the centerpiece of Clatsop Community Colleges Campus Reads program during the 2011-12 academic year. Copies are available for checkout in the CCC library and no library card is needed to check out a copy.

Naselle library temp closed
NASELLE The Naselle Timberland Library will be closed from Saturday, Feb. 11 through Saturday, Feb. 18 for the installation of new carpet. Books and other library materials that are due back to the library during the closure will be extended until the library reopens on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The book drop will be available to return library materials.
Seed Sale & Seed Swap
RAYMOND On Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Willapa Valley Grange at 290 Camp One Road in Raymond, is hosting a Seed Sale and Seed Swapping event featuring local seed vendors, Master Gardeners, soil amendment producers, and other gardening fun to prepare for the planting season. Bring seeds to swap, or plan to purchase some from vendors many seeds are discounted. Presentations will be offered about fertilizing, seed starting, etc. There will be a potluck lunch at noon, and bake sale items available all day (or while supplies last!). NASELLE The Pacific County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Naselle-Grays River Valley High School. The event follows the always-popular Deep River American Legion Auxiliarys Valentine smorgasbord. This years program will feature LaRee Johnson of Astoria who will present Fashion Before Freedom highlighting the history of fashion from the early 20th century. Johnson is the author of Ladies Vintage Accessories, which is in its fourth edition. Johnson has shared her extensive collection of vintage clothing and accessories with audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest for several years. The event is open to the public. Tsunami Debris
SEAVIEW The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency has public presentations to discuss the marine debris generated by the March 2011 Japanese tsunami and its potential to impact the Pacific County coastline. Presentations are scheduled for: 6 p.m., Feb. 14 at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place in Seaview; 10 a.m., Feb. 15 at Pacific County Fire District No. 1 in Ocean Park and at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 15 at the Shoalwater Bay Tribal Center in Tokeland. The regional coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program will lead the presentation. In addition, representatives from the Washington State Department of Ecology, the U.S. Coast Guard, Washington State Emergency Management Division, and Washington State Department of Health have been invited to answer questions. The public and local agencies and organizations are welcome to attend any of the presentations, which are intended to be of an informational nature.

OCEAN PARK Seniors and low-income taxpayers can get free help with their 2011 Federal income taxes at the Ocean Park Timberland Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11. No appointment is needed this is a sign in and wait your turn service. Please bring all current tax records (including all amounts of rebates/credits received in 2011), plus a copy of all 2010 tax records/return. Backyard bird count
PACIFIC COUNTY It is time to count birds during the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Anyone can participate in this free event and no registration is needed. Watch and count birds for at least 15 minutes on any day of the count, between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20. Enter your results at www.birdcount.org, where you can watch as the tallies grow across the continent. Brown pelicans
FORT CLATSOP At 1 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 19 in the Netul River room of the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center, Deborah Jaques will be talking about the history of brown pelican occurrence in the Columbia River region, the general ecology of the species, and current pelican research and management topics on the west coast. Jaques is a wildlife biologist at Pacific Eco Logic, based in Astoria. She specializes in applied research, monitoring, and management of Pacific coast waterbirds and their habitat.
