NOAA Weather Radio Program
PENINSULA The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is participating in a NOAA Weather Radio Program designed to educate the public on the warnings and alerts that may be issued from the National Weather Service. On Feb. 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., a training will be held at Fire District No. 1 at 26110 Ridge Avenue and then from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., that evening at the Ilwaco Community Building at 158 First Avenue North. Program participants will learn important information about tsunamis and how to make a home preparedness kit during a presentation by the Washington State Emergency Management Division. By attending the presentation, participants will be eligible to receive a NOAA weather radio at no cost (if they meet the specified income levels). Residents of the Long Beach, Ilwaco, and Ocean Park vicinity are all welcome to attend this training; however, radios are limited to the first 50 residents per presentation who meet the specified income levels. CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT Attend a meeting of the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 62 and see what this organization is all about. They are the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard that supports the Coast Guard in nearly all of the services missions. Two of their purposes are safety of life upon navigable waters and the promotion of efficiency in the operation of pleasure craft. Anyone age 17 and older is welcome to join. ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital hosts the workshop, Living Well with Chronic Conditions, for six consecutive weeks through Feb. 23. Why come to the workshop? You can learn to live a healthy life with your chronic condition by managing your symptoms. The course is for 2.5 hours on six consecutive Thursdays in the Ocean Beach Hospital meeting rooms. LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Womens Heart to Heart lunch
ILWACO Gwen Meyer, an advanced registered nurse practitioner from the Naselle Medical Clinic, will be one of three speakers featured at the annual Womens Heart to Heart lunch, Feb. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Listen to Your Heart is the theme of this years forum, which focuses on the unique health issues women face. The event is co-sponsored by Ocean Beach Hospital Auxiliary and Gift Shop and Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. In addition to Meyer, other speakers will include Dr. Pam Law, a naturopath from Portland, and Geri Marcus, the education manager at Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. Meyers presentation is entitled What Is Your Blood Pressure Telling You? Laws presentation is entitled The Natural Path to a Healthier Heart. Marcus presentation is entitled Staying Alive: The Importance of Learning CPR. Tickets are available at Ocean Beach Hospital Gift Shop, Peninsula Pharmacies and Campiche Studios. CERT training
ILWACO The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is offering training for disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact this area. The course is a total of 20 hours, spread over three instructional days. All course materials will be provided. In South County training is set for Friday, Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at Pacific Bible Church at 501 N. Perfect Garden Soil
LONG BEACH On Saturday, Feb. 4 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Long Beach Grange, located at 5715 Sandridge Road, is hosting another community class during the Indoor Market. Come meet Ray Millner and Jim Karnofski, who will share their expertise on making the perfect garden soil. The class will concentrate on the concept that the best soil will produce the largest crop possible with the most taste, vitamins, and minerals. Jim will discuss the use of compost and bio-char to improve the productivity of your garden and to incorporate carbon-rich materials in the soil. SKAMOKAWA Redmen Hall, at 1391 SR-4 in Skamokawa, is opening on Feb. 4 with an exhibit by some of Wahkiakum Countys talented craftspeople. A kaleidoscope of Wahkiakum crafts will cover the range from well-known to new, from fabric arts to woodcarvings to tiles to ceramics and more. It will be a celebration of Wahkiakum talent. The Redmen Hall is open from noon to 4 p.m.. Cookies and hot cider will be served and the rest of Redmen Hall has been restocked with new books and gifts and spruced up historical exhibits. The Heart of the Museum
ILWACO The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum has received a wide array of gifts over the past several years, from gift wrap imprinted with the Ilwaco Rail & Navigation Company locomotive, to a sled made from Columbia River Packing Association crates and many more. While they are not able to display all the wonderful donations to the museum, a cross-section of recent donations will be part of a special exhibition showing now through March 11.

Strengthening families
LONG BEACH Parents and youth ages 10 to 14 are invited to a workshop entitled Strengthening Families to be held each Monday, starting Feb. 6 (except Feb. 20) through March 26. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m., class runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The seven sessions will include family discussions and games, a free meal, childcare, parent discussions and youth activities. Working in the Shadows
ASTORIA On Feb. 8, Gabriel Thompson, the author of Working in the Shadows: A Year of Doing The Jobs (Most) Americans Wont Do, will be in Astoria to discuss his book. Thompson will be speaking at noon at Clatsop Community College in Columbia Hall, room 219, and, at 6:30 p.m., at the Liberty Theater in the McTavish Room. These events are free and everyone is invited. In 2008, Thompson, who was born in Oregon, spent a year working undercover in several minimum-wage jobs in the lettuce fields of Arizona, a chicken processing plant in Alabama and delivering restaurant food on a bicycle in New York City. Thompsons book is the centerpiece of Clatsop Community Colleges Campus Reads program during the 2011-12 academic year. Copies are available for checkout in the CCC library and no library card is needed to check out a copy.

NASELLE The Pacific County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Naselle-Grays River Valley High School. The event follows the always-popular Deep River American Legion Auxiliarys Valentine smorgasbord. This years program will feature LaRee Johnson of Astoria, who will present Fashion Before Freedom highlighting the history of fashion from the early 20th century. Johnson is the author of Ladies Vintage Accessories, which is in its fourth edition. Johnson has shared her extensive collection of vintage clothing and accessories with audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest for several years. The event is open to the public. RAYMOND Senior Chair Yoga with instructor Tina Jaffe will begin Feb 13. FORT CLATSOP At 1 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 19 in the Netul River room of the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center, Deborah Jaques will be talking about the history of brown pelican occurrence in the Columbia River region, the general ecology of the species, and current pelican research and management topics on the west coast. Jaques is a wildlife biologist at Pacific Eco Logic, based in Astoria. She specializes in applied research, monitoring, and management of Pacific coast waterbirds and their habitat.
