Make Parenting a Pleasure

    LONG BEACH WellSpring Community Network is offering a special parenting series to run weekly each Wednesday from Jan. 11 through March 14 at Long Beach Elementary School. This is a group-based class for parents and caregivers with children up to age 8. Attendees will learn practical stress management and communication skills, gain a greater understanding of children, learn effective parenting skills and positive approaches to discipline and meet and network with other parents. There will be dinner at 5:30 p.m., with the class running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $25, with scholarships available. Community Garden

    LONG BEACH Pacific County Community Gardens (PCCG) is hosting a groundbreaking for the new Long Beach garden at 11th & Oregon on Friday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. Please help erect our community information board, walk people through the garden layout and thank those who made this garden possible.

    Bryan West, leader of the group and organizer of this garden would like give a special thanks to Gene Miles of Long Beach Housing Authority, Mike Perez of the City of Long Beach, and Katie Lindstrom of the Pacific County Health Department for their special generosity that allowed this to get off the ground.

    The group is also involved in community gardens in Klipsan beach (behind Jimella & Nancy’s Market Cafe), 68th and Sandridge (inside Green Angel Gardens), and of course this newest garden in Long Beach.  We are currently in discussions with several other land owners and hope these efforts lead to  establishing even more gardens throughout Pacific County.

Sports Boosters Crab Feed

    LONG BEACH The Ilwaco Sports Boosters will hold their annual crab feed at the Long Beach Elks Lodge on Jan. 14 from noon to 8 p.m. Stop in and enjoy a one-crab dinner with bread and coleslaw for $14, or a two-crab dinner with bread and coleslaw for $22. Hot dogs will be available for $2. Pop, beer and wine will also be served. All funds raised will support the Ilwaco Sports Boosters.

Windless Kite Festival

    LONG BEACH  The 11th annual Windless Kite Festival is Jan. 14 and Jan. 15 at the Long Beach Elementary School gym on Washington Avenue, with shows at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., on Saturday and at 11 a.m., and 1 p.m., on Sunday. This two-day event not only puts on a great show but gives beginners and novices time on the floor with experienced teachers and coaches. The shows include the hot trick shoot out performances where flyers challenge each other with phenomenal flying techniques, such as flying with the lines on their ears or keeping a bed sheet sized kite in the air. Admission is by donation. In addition to original new performances, attendees will enjoy the grandest Italian potluck meal, bag raffle and awards banquet ever. Call 642-4020 for information.

Living history

    FORT CLATSOP  Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is offering a free special living history program. On Saturday, Jan. 14, and Sunday, Jan. 15, the Fort Clatsop replica will come alive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition during the parks 11th annual presentation of Wintering Over: Snugly Fixed in their Huts. During this event, visitors are encouraged to converse with expedition members (portrayed by first-person character interpreters) camped at their Fort Clatsop winter headquarters in 1806.  Explore what it is like for these Corps members as they survive off elk and the good graces of their Clatsop and Chinook neighbors. Discover who these people were, where they came from and what their journey has been like so far.  Come explore the people behind the story! In addition to this event at the fort, there are movies in the visitor center theater. A Clatsop Winter Story, a 22-minute movie about the 1805-06 winter from a Clatsop Indian perspective, will be offered each hour and Lewis and Clark: Confluence of Time and Courage, a 34-minute movie about the entire voyage, will be available. Fort Clatsop is located southwest of Astoria, three miles east of U.S. Highway 101. History of Razor Clams

    WESTPORT  Discover the history and ecology of razor clams with Alan Rammer on Sunday, Jan. 15, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Westport Winery, located between Westport and Aberdeen. It is free to attend and open to all ages. Space is limited so reservations are required. There is lunch service before the class begins so make a date of it. Rammer is co-author of the book Glass Fishing Floats of the World. He is retired from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and is a graduate from the University of Washington with a degree in shellfish biology and invertebrate zoology. AAUW meeting

    ILWACO The Willapacific branch of AAUW will hold its first meeting of the year Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Ilwaco Community Building. Guest speakers will be Mark Hottowe and Mark Simmons, who will discuss what organizations like AAUW can do to promote educational goals at Ocean Beach middle and high schools. AAUW is an organization dedicated to the promotion of education with an emphasis on equity for women through advocacy. The public is welcome.

Bunco for kids food

    LONG BEACH Each Monday at 7 p.m., a fundraiser for the Long Beach Elks sponsored Food4Kids Program will be held. Everyone is welcome to come play bunco, with proceeds going to help purchase food for a backpack of healthy food and snacks to get them through the weekend.

    PENINSULA Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is holding three public presentations to discuss the marine debris generated by the Japanese tsunami. Presentations are set for: Jan. 17 at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview; Jan. 18 at 10 a.m., at Pacific County Fire District No. 1 in Ocean Park; and at 5:30 p.m., Jan. 18 at the Shoalwater Bay Casino in Tokeland. The regional coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Debris Program will lead the presentation. Representatives from the Washington state Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, Department of Ecology, Emergency Management Division and Department of Health will also be on hand to answer questions. Clamming

    PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Beach clean up

    PACIFIC COUNTY  This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Peninsulas organized beach cleanups. There will be a potluck gathering and speaker the evening before from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Jan. 20 at the Peninsula Baptist Church in Klipsan. The beach cleanup is set for Jan. 21. After the cleanup, volunteers will gather at noon for a soup feed at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Find more information at ourbeach.org.

Pacific Highway, with proceeds benefiting the Tall Elks Therapy Program for Kids. The no host bar opens at 4 p.m., dinnnr is at 5 p.m., and the who starts at 6 p.m. The admission price is one filled Tall Elks coin box or $8 per person and includes dinner and the show. The show will include a variety of talented (and maybe not quite so talented) performers to entertain and delight. Attendees are sure to have a uniquely outrageous experience. NOAA Weather Radio Program

    PENINSULA The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency is participating in a NOAA Weather Radio Program designed to educate the public on the warnings and alerts that may be issued from the National Weather Service. On Feb. 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., a training will be held at Fire District No. 1 at 26110 Ridge Avenue and then from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., that evening at the Ilwaco Community Building at 158 First Avenue north. Program participants will learn important information about tsunamis and how to make a home preparedness kit during a presentation by the Washington State Emergency Management Division. By attending the presentation, participants will be eligible to receive a NOAA weather radio at no cost (if they meet the specified income levels). Residents of the Long Beach, Ilwaco, and Ocean Park vicinity are all welcome to attend this training; however, radios are limited to the first 50 residents per presentation who meet the specified income levels. Womens Heart to Heart lunch

    ILWACO  Gwen Meyer, an advanced registered nurse practitioner from the Naselle Medical Clinic, will be one of three speakers featured at the annual Womens Heart to Heart lunch, Feb. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Long Beach Elks Lodge. Listen to Your Heart is the theme of this years forum, which focuses on the unique health issues women face. The event is co-sponsored by Ocean Beach Hospital Auxiliary and Gift Shop and Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. In addition to Meyer, other speakers will include Dr. Pam Law, a naturopath from Portland and Geri Marcus, the education manager at Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics. Meyers presentation is entitled What Is Your Blood Pressure Telling You? Laws presentation is entitled The Natural Path to a Healthier Heart. Marcus presentation is entitled Staying Alive:  The Importance of Learning CPR. CERT training

    ILWACO The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is offering training for disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact this area. The course is a total of 20 hours, spread over three instructional days. All course materials will be provided. In South County training is set for Friday, Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at Pacific Bible Church at 501 N. Strengthening families

    NASELLE Friends of the Naselle Timberland Library are having their annual meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Board positions will be filled and anyone interested in supporting the library is encouraged to come. Positive community norms

    SEAVIEW  From 9 a.m. to 4 .m. on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16, anyone interested in learning more about changing social norms around youth substance use, mental health, or other wellness topics in our community is encouraged to attend the Positive Community Norms Training at the Peninsula Church Center at 5000 N Place in Seaview.     U.S.A. Turn your clocks ahead one hour for the beginning of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m., on Sunday, March 11. Fire departments encourage you to change the batteries in your smoke detectors at the same time.
