Prep for Weather
LONG BEACH Come to the Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road, for a community class on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The session will begin with a potluck dinner at 5 p.m., with the class running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The class is free for Grange members, $5 for non-members. Alisabeth Buck will present a very informative session on winter preventive care of your garden, orchard, property and small livestock animals such as poultry and rabbits. This class will focus on winterizing and preparing for winter weather and its effect on animals and agriculture. Amahl & the Night Visitors
ASTORIA Beginning at 7:30 p.m., on both Dec. 1 and Dec. 2, enjoy Gian Carlo Menottis Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Clatsop Community Colleges Performing Arts Center at 11th and Franklin in Astoria. This delightful opera is the story of a young crippled boy and his encounter with three kings, who are on a journey to find and bring gifts to a special child. You wont want to miss the telling of this story by some of the most talented vocalists in our community: Ann Bronson, Louise Goyena, Deac Guidi, Will Caplinger, Michael Camponello and John Dahlsten, with dancers from the Maddox School of Dance. Penguins in Antarctica
LONGVIEW Ice, penguins and the cold comforts of living and working in Antarctica will be featured in a lively slide show by Oregon birder and author Noah Strycker at a special meeting of the Willapa Hills Audubon Society. The free one-hour Among Penguins event is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Cowlitz PUD Auditorium, 961 12th Avenue in Longview. Strycker spent three months during the Antarctic summer researching and photographing a quarter-million Adélie penguins. He recounts his experiences on the coldest, windiest, driest, least populated, highest and most remote continent in his new book, Among Penguins: A Bird Man in Antarctica (Oregon State University Press, 2011).
Line dancing
LONG BEACH Line dancing will be offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road on Dec. 1 and Dec. 8. Celebration of Lights
ILWACOOcean Beach Hospital Foundations Celebration of Lights, the annual live and silent auction that benefits patients and programs at Ocean Beach Hospital, will be Friday, Dec. 2 at the Artisan at 114 Main Street S.W., in Ilwaco. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. The live auction starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes a choice of beverage, a commemorative wine glass or cider mug and a delicious assortment of appetizers. Spiced cider, wine, hors doeuvres and festive live music from the Finnish-American Choir of Naselle will be part of this years holiday gala. The auction is one of the hospital foundations signature events. Proceeds go to patient care and programs, such as the hospitals new oncology clinic. Auction items include original works and limited editions from local artists, a variety of gift certificates from merchants and restaurants, jewelry, custom quilts, home and garden items, gift baskets, and decorated Christmas trees and wreaths. OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the community tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2 at the Eagles on Bay Avenue in Ocean Park. Boat parade & tree lighting
ILWACO Everyone is encouraged to come to the Port of Ilwaco for the lighting of the crab pot Christmas tree and the lighted boat parade on Dec. 3. The lighting of the worlds tallest crab pot Christmas tree is followed by Christmas carols and the worlds shortest fireworks display and at 6 p.m., the lighted boat parade to Station Cape Disappointment and back gets underway. Birding walk
LONGVIEW On Saturday, Dec. 3, Willapa Hills Audubon Society will conduct a morning birding walk at Lake Sacajawea Park in Longview, where attendees will observe wintering waterfowl and other resident birds. Christmas concert
OCEAN PARK Bayside Singers will perform their annual Christmas concert at 3 p.m., on Dec. 4 at the United Methodist Church in Ocean Park, and at 3 p.m., on Dec. 18 at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church. The choral group of 28 singers, directed by Barbara Poulshock and accompanied by pianist Barbara Bate, will give a varied musical program of carols and Christmas selections to celebrate the holiday season.
Soup Supper/Book Signing
NASELLE Naselle Evangelical Lutheran Church will host its annual Advent Soup Supper on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event, featuring homemade soups and breads, follows the FinnAm Christmas Tour of Homes. Freewill donations for the supper are used to maintain the Deep River Pioneer Church sanctuary. The soup supper will feature a book signing by local author John Indermark, who will be signing copies of his two latest books: The Greatest of These and Way Words. The Greatest of These explores Biblical perspectives on love. Way Words is a collection of daily readings for use during the season of Lent. Copies will be available for sale at $12 and $10 respectively, with $1 for each book sale going toward the Deep River Pioneer Church.
Sing for Joy
RAYMOND Willapa Harbor Chorale will Sing for Joy in celebration of the beginning of the Christmas season during their 40th annual Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the historic Raymond Theater. The group includes 36 singers who join their voices to perform Christmas and holiday music, old and new. The choir is directed by Rick Gauger with Beth Ginther as accompanist. Additional musical support is given by flutist Connie Bevington. There is no charge for the concert although donations are accepted. A reception follows the concert.

Toys for Tots
PENINSULA Local U.S. Marine Corps Reserve members John and Bobbie Hoechlin, with help from Jennifer Reynolds of Pacific County Fire District No. 1, are collecting toys and gifts to be distributed locally to kids who may not otherwise have a Christmas gift to open this year. Businesses, organizations and community members are welcome to help in the effort by donating new, unwrapped toys at selected drop off sites. Toys for Tots donation drop boxes for new, unwrapped toys are at: All Seasons Kidstuff in Chinook; Bank of Pacific in Ilwaco; the Chinook Observer office, the Bank of Pacific, Dennis Company, KeyBank, and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Long Beach; Peninsula Senior Center in Klipsan; and Bank of Pacific and Great Northwest Federal Credit Union in Ocean Park. Once Toys for Tots coordinators collect the donations, specific local agencies such as Head Start, the Elks and Eagles lodges, and PCFD No. 1 help them to distribute the gifts to select lists of needy kids ages one through 16. Help is especially needed to find gifts for the older kids around 12 to 16 years old. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity; all toy and monetary donations are tax-deductible. Checks made out to Marine Corps League Toys for Tots may be mailed to P.O. Box 213, Oysterville, WA 98641. KLIPSAN American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) meets at noon on Dec. 5 for a Christmas potluck, followed by an introduction of next years officers and a regular meeting. Musical entertainment will be provided by children from Ocean Park Elementary School under the direction of Bob Walters.

Shoeboxes of Joy
PENINSUA A mens group from Ocean Park Lutheran Church called the Breakfast Bunch and Coast Community Action Program (CCAP) are hosting the Shoeboxes of Joy Holiday Project this year. The projects goal is to provide a filled shoebox to the low income elderly and disabled who may not have family or friends close by. Between now and Dec. 10 it is hoped that a large number shoeboxes can be filled so that many can experience the joy of a thoughtful gift. Suggested items to fill the shoeboxes include: soap, small-sized shampoos, lotions, shaving cream, razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, puzzles, crossword puzzles, cookies, sugarless candies, a small ornament/decorative items, AA batteries, small flashlight, and many other such items. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to gift wrap a filled box and include a gift tag indicating if the contents are for a man or woman. Volunteers are needed to help put boxes together, create route lists and assist with delivery. If you are interested in participating or helping call DeAnn at 642-1105.
Decorated tree auction
LONG BEACH Holidays at the Beach present a decorated tree auction at 1 p.m., on Dec. 10 at the Neptune Theater at 809 Ocean Beach Boulevard S., in Long Beach. The Long Beach Merchants and Valley Remodeling are bringing five magnificent trees for auction. They can be seen between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9 at Dr. Roof at 910 Pacific Avenue S., Cottage Bakery at 118 Pacific Avenue S., Re/Max Excellence at 102 5th Street NW, Beachdog.com at 1517 Pacific Avenue N., and at the Neptune Theatre. All trees are from six- and seven-foot tall noble firs, complete with stand and water basin.
Magnificat
ASTORIA North Coast Chorales annual winter concert is set for 7 p.m., Dec. 10 and at 2 p.m., Dec. 11 at Clatsop Community Colleges Performing Arts Center at 11th and Franklin in Astoria. This concert will feature John Rutters Magnificat, the song of Mary featuring soprano soloist Genevieve Butenshon and an orchestra comprised of local instrumentalists. The second half of the concert will witness a visit from Santa as the Chorale sings the very popular Twas the Night Before Christmas assisted by the Astor Street Opry Players. Be sure to bring the children along to this event also; there will be music for everyone for the holiday season. Tuba Christmas
ILWACO The Water Music Festival is proud to again present the Tuba Christmas Concert, featuring the Astoria Tuba Quartet, on Sunday, Dec. 11 beginning at 2 p.m., at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street. This free, family-friendly event provides toe-tapping traditional music, including jazz and perhaps a polka or two. Donations will be cheerfully accepted.
Christmas party
OCEAN PARK Ocean Park Eagles will again be hosting a Christmas party for children of all ages in the community on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., at the Ocean Park Lodge located at 1409 Bay Ave. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
