Election: Gorshe wins hospital post; Perez, Mulinix ahead for council seats

ILWACO, Wash. Change is coming to Pacific County Hospital District 3, which operates Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco.

Longtime hospital board commissioner DeWayne LaPointe was voted out of office by a huge margin in Tuesday’s general election.

Nancy Gorshe, a former care worker and local restaurant owner, will serve a six-year term after polling 2,655 votes (80 percent). LaPointe polled just 633 votes (19 percent). The campaign featured a public examination into the hospital leadership’s handling of the finances of the district.

For Ilwaco City Council, Vinessa Mulinix appears to have mounted a succesful write-in campaign to unseat appointed incumbent Don Berger. The County Elections Department counted 144 votes for Milinix (54 percent). Berger polled 119 votes. In the other seat, incumbent Gary Forner was unopposed for a four-year term.

There was one contested race for Long Beach City Council. Mark Perez and Rhonda Benson squared off for a four-year term, seeking to secure the seat being vacated by Ralph Moore. Perez is ahead with 209 votes (53 percent) to Benson’s 181 votes (46 percent).

Because postmarks count in Washington, all results announced Tuesday night will be subject to confirmation as additional votes trickle in this week.

Incumbent Steven Linhart was re-elected unopposed to the City Council. Newcomer Del Murry was unopposed, taking over the seat from Gordon Zuern. Both will serve four-year terms. Bob Andrew is unopposed for another four years as Long Beach mayor.

Two incumbents, Kim Patten and Sandra Stonebreaker, were unopposed for re-election to four-year terms on the five-member Ocean Beach School District Board. Kathy Mathews was unopposed to take over the seat being vacated by Marilyn Sheldon.

In Naselle, three incumbents were unopposed for re-election to four-year terms on the Naselle-Grays River School Board. Earning new four-year-terms were Hollis Fletcher, Robert Torppa and Edmund Darcher

In Pacific County Fire District No. 1, incumbent Thomas Downer was unopposed for a six-year term.

There was a race in only one Pacific County port district – the Port of Willapa Harbor. Incumbent Tim Bond polled 1,469 votes (53 percent) to challenger Frank Porembski’s 1,272 votes (46 percent) for a a six-year term. The outcome will be determined when the election is certified Nov. 29.

All other Pacific County port positions featured unopposed incumbents. For the Port of Peninsula, Cindy Bade was unopposed for a six-year term. For Port of Chinook, Ken Greenfield was unopposed for a six-year term. For the Port of Ilwaco, Dave Nichols was unopposed for a six-year term and Les Swensen was unopposed for a two-year term.

Three people were unopposed for terms on Chinook Water District. They are Charles Stuart (four years), Stewart Simonson (two-year unexpired term) and Kenneth Osborne (six-year term).

Here are the ballot issues:

State Initiative 1125 asked voters to make sure money raised from highway tolls is allocated to specific projects. Pacific Count voted 3,561 to 3,064. The measure narrowly passed statewide.

State Initiative Measure 1163 asked voters to tighten rules on background checks and training for long-term care workers. Pacific Count voted 4,859 to 1,809. The measure passed statewide.

State Initiative 1183 asked voters to discontinue state liquor stores and allow private vendors to sell liquor. Pacific Count voted 3,595 to 3,190. The measure passed statewide.

State Senate Joint Resolution 8205 asked voters to clean up the language on residency rights for people wanting to vote in a presidential election. Pacific Count voted 4,225 to 2,253. The noncontroversial measure passed statewide

State Senate Joint Resolution 8206 asked voters to approve a method of stabilizing the state budget. Pacific Count voted 4,170 to 2,136. The measure passed statewide.
