PENINSULA Admiring local artwork is always uplifting and Peninsula Art Association encourages everyone to take time to check out local places to view several artists works. Line dancing
LONG BEACH Line dancing on the Peninsula is offered at Long Beach Grange at 5715 Sandridge Road. Dancing for beginners and intermediates is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and advanced dancers hit the floor from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday, except the fourth Thursday of the month. Attendees will find pottery, embroidery, cranberry baskets, jewelry, plants, knitting, hand-sewn items, books, glassworks, watercolors and lots more. Plus there will be homemade pies and coffee for purchase. Gift wrapping will also be available. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from sales go to the Ocean Beach Presbyterian Womens Association to help fund mission work both locally and abroad.

ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco is holding its 2nd Annual 6×6 Art Show and Auction fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 5. The silent auction is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the live auction begins at 6 p.m., with Bruce Peterson presiding. There will be 60-plus art pieces representing nearly 45 local artists from both sides of the river. All are unique masterpieces, and you are sure to find the unusual, quirky and fun. Come to the 4-H Lock-In
WARRENTON Hey kids do you like to play games, make crafts and swim? If so come join the 4-H sponsored youth overnight lock-in on Nov. 5 at the KOA in Warrenton. It is for any youth in grades fourth through sixth who want to have some fun. It will begin at 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5 and end at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. Hazard sirens testing
SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Monday, Nov. 7, at noon. A Simple Gesture
PENINSULA Heres an easy way to make a difference in your neighbors lives. Local residents purchase one or more extra non-perishable food items when they go shopping and store the items in a cool green bag provided by the Ocean Park Food bank. On the second Saturday of every other month, food bank volunteers will pick up the bags and leave another bag. If you would like to participate or want more information call 665-6567.

Veterans Day celebration
LONG BEACH The Long Beach Elks in collaboration with American Legion and VFW will host a luncheon at noon on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at Long Beach Elks Lodge, 110 N. Pacific Highway. The guest speaker will be Jerry Nichols, who in 1953 was on a U.S. Navy ship near Korea, which took care of an abandoned baby. Attendees will be asked to make a small donation toward phone cards and other gifts for those serving overseas. The meeting is open to the public and free for all veterans. ILWACO The Chinook Tribe hosts their annual dinner salmon dinner at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 12. The dinner includes regional seafood, salad, Indian fry bread, dessert and beverages for $15 per person, $13 for seniors 55 years old and over, and $5 for children under 12. No reservations are required.

ILWACO Because of the holidays, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Ilwaco will be only be open the second and third Fridays in November and December. That will be Nov. 11, Nov. 18, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring a box or bags for your food.

NASELLE The Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Knappton Road is hosting a bake sale and holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 12. There will be an extravagant variety of specialty baked goods, handcrafted gifts, and so much more. You will find almond croissants, cardamom bread, jam parfaits and jellies, roasted nuts, cookies, pies, candies, chocolate bars, treat mixes in jars, bread, holiday treats for puppies and birds, plus quilts, towel dresses, wall hangings, table runners and the list goes on. You can take a break and choose from a variety of hot soups for lunch with a coffee bar for a nominal fee.
Detour Concert at Skamokawa
SKAMOKAWA The Americana band Detour will perform in concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Skamokawa Grange located next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds at 16 Fairgrounds Road. The four-piece group consists of accordionist Toby Hanson, drummer Mike Friel, Steve Nebel on guitar, and band leader Kristi Nebel on bass. All band members sing. The concert will include some of Steves songs about the fishing fleets of Alaska, where they traveled with their music for six years. Accordionist Toby Hanson is familiar to the Naselle community with his band, The Smiling Scandinavians, regulars at the bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival. His expertise and love of polka music create welcomed contributions to the repertoire. Opening for Detour on Nov. 12 will be Sunrise Fletcher, longtime local favorite, who will perform songs from his ninth CD Unplugged, including his own original songs. Refreshments will be available. Clamming
PENINSULA A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between noon and midnight. The best time to start is an hour or two before low tide and it is recommended you take a lantern for evening digs. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.
Wildlife refuge meeting & auction
ILWACO The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will hold their annual member meeting and dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12 at The Artisan located at 114 Main Street SW in Ilwaco. Willapa National Wildlife Manager Charlie Stenvall and Kim Patten from WSU extension office will be the guest speakers. This is a members-only event. ASTORIA Clatsop Community College is one of 12 locations to host College Night in Oregon on Monday, Nov. 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Columbia Hall, 2nd floor, 1651 Lexington Avenue, Astoria. The evening is aimed toward high school seniors and their parents, but adults who are planning to enter college are also welcome. Presentations will include college admissions, understanding the financial aid process and scholarship information. OYSTERVILLE Peninsula Association of Performing Artists is presenting the entertaining, Shoalwater Shenanigans, based on the book Skulduggery on Shoalwater Bay at the Oysterville Church at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19. True stories of early area pioneers will be featured along with music of the time of l840-90. You will hear about the Bruce Boys, Oysterville getting started, a fired up Fourth of July, the teacher who was paid with a pig and many other happenings that run the gamut from humorous to touching all of it lively local history. AAUW meeting
ILWACO Scott Lee, Drew Herzig and Mark Perez, members of the Lower Columbia Diversity Project board, will speak at the 7 p.m., Nov. 21 meeting of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in the Coastal Community Action Plan dining room in the Ilwaco Community Building, 152 First Avenue North. The Lower Columbia Diversity Project was formed to engage pro-actively with diversity issues in the region, educate the community on the benefits of diversity and tolerance, and provide a forum through which individuals, groups and organizations may address concerns relating to diversity in the community. Penguins in Antarctica
LONGVIEW Ice, penguins and the cold comforts of living and working in Antarctica will be featured in a lively slide show by Oregon birder and author Noah Strycker, 25, at a special meeting of the Willapa Hills Audubon Society. The free one-hour Among Penguins event is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Cowlitz PUD Auditorium, 961 12th Avenue in Longview. Strycker spent three months during the Antarctic summer researching and photographing a quarter-million Adélie penguins.
He recounts his experiences on the coldest, windiest, driest, least populated, highest and most remote continent in his new book, Among Penguins: A Bird Man in Antarctica (Oregon State University Press, 2011). A magna cum laude Oregon State University graduate, Strycker serves as associate editor of the American Birding Associations Birding magazine, has published photographs and articles in all major birding magazines, has contributed to several books and works as a bird researcher in adventurous places around the world.
