Red Hats event

Help OP Food Bank

    PENINSULA Heres an easy way to make a difference in your neighbors lives. Local residents purchase one or more extra non-perishable food items when they go shopping and store it in a cool green bag provided by the Ocean Park Food bank.  On the second Saturday of every other month, food bank volunteers will pick up the bags and leave another bag. Summer camps exhibit

    ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco has a new exhibit, Summer Camps on the North Beach Peninsula. Local author and historian Sydney Stevens is the guest curator for the exhibition. She is an alumnus of Camp Willapa and has written extensively on its history. The exhibition will include photographs, objects and stories from Camp Willapa, Camp Sherwood Forest, Camp Morehead, Camp Lily Del Dune (now the Dunes Bible Camp) and Hill Summer Camp. Winter Gardening Seminar

    ILWACO Mark your calendar now for a winter gardening seminar set for noon to 5 p.m., on Sept. 17 at the Karnofski Gardens, a productive, local garden, bio-char and greenhouse operation at 1636 State Route 101, Ilwaco. There will be a variety of topics and speakers covering everything from preparing garden beds; planting and care of winter vegetables; recipes, tips and preparation of winter vegetable products and lots more. All proceeds will go to the His Supper Table feeding program. Attendees may bring personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies, canned food donations or cash. Entry is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and children under 16 years old free. In addition a soup, salad and bread breaking supper will follow, for a suggested donation of $5. Operation Shore Patrol

    PENINSULA The Pacific Northwest Four-Wheel Drive Association is hosting their 40th annual Operation Shore Patrol beach cleanup event on Saturday, Sept. 17. Check in at Cape Disappointment State Park between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., if need you bags or other information. Cleanup starts at 8 a.m., and ends promptly at noon. Call 360-560-4598. Shred day

    LONG BEACH  Great NorthWest Federal Credit Union is hosting a shred day from 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 17 in the parking lot at the Long Beach branch. Bring three or four grocery bags full of items that you would like shredded. There is no cost. Angora Hiking Club

    ASTORIA  On Saturday, Sept. 17, join the Angora Hiking Club for a bike hike.  The meeting place is at the West Mooring basin on Marine Drive in Astoria at 9:30 a.m. Carpooling will be arranged for the drive to Westport Ferry. It is not necessary to be a member of the club to participate, for more information about the club check out www.angorahikingclub.org. Dues are only $7 a year. Bikers are required to provide their own bike, helmet, car carrier, water and a lunch. Estimated return time is about 2 p.m.  It is a very gentle, level scenic ride around the island. In Their Footsteps

    FORT CLATSOP  Lewis and Clark National Historical Park Fort Clatsop is pleased to announce this seasons monthly guest speaker series, In Their Footsteps. This presentation by Carol Lucas will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18. For 21 years, herb specialist Carol Lucas has been in business on Oregons north coast with Natures Sunshine Products. She learned her first herbs at her grandmothers knee; a woman raised on a homestead up in the hills out of Vernonia, Ore. To her grandmother, every plant and animal had a name, and a story or two. Carol is fascinated by the thought that Lewis would have learned even more at his mothers knee, since Lucy, his mother, was a practicing herbalist.  All programs will be held in the Netul River Room of Fort Clatsops visitor center and are free of charge. Block party

    ILWACO All are invited to stop by the Ilwaco City Park on Sunday, Sept. 18 for the Ilwaco Parks and Recreation Commissions first ever block party. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to the park to enjoy free food and refreshments, a kickball tournament, volleyball, Frisbee golf and live music. Singer to perform

    RAYMOND Sunday Afternoon Live will present a special event featuring singer-songwriter Ericka Corban and her band, which includes her husband, Mattaniah and Jeff Perrin, at the historic Raymond Theatre, located at 323 Third Street, at 2 p.m. on Sept. 18. She will be releasing a new album, Daydream, at her appearance in Raymond. Please note this concert is not part of the regular season, and tickets must be purchased for this event. ENCORE gathering

Lupus, Fibromyalgia & chronic pain

    SEASIDE  The NorthCoast Lupus/Fibromyalgia Support Group Meetings resume Monday, Sept. 19. While there isnt a scheduled speaker set, this is a great meeting to attend. The format of the meeting is being expanded to include sufferers of chronic pain. Meetings are held at 2 p.m., the third Monday of every month (except July and August) in Education Room A at Providence Seaside Hospital. Construction delays

    PENINSULA Pacific County Department of Public Works, on behalf of Flood Control Zone District No. 1, will place pipe across State Route 103 at 147th Place. This work is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 19. Preparatory work will be completed Sept. 19 and Sept. 20, with construction Sept. 21 and resurfacing on Sept. 22. Although the roadway will be open to one lane of vehicular traffic at all times, the public is advised of work in this area as delays may occur. Hydrant flushing

    LONG BEACH  The city of Long Beach will be flushing and flow testing hydrants in the Long Beach and Seaview areas beginning Monday, Sept. 19 through Friday, Sept. 30, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. This action may cause temporary discoloration of the water due to iron sediment, and a reduction in water pressure. Audubon class

    RAYMOND Discovery Coast Audubon Society is holding a North Pacific County meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 19, at the PUD Willapa Operations Center, at 405 Duryea St., Raymond. AAUW meeting

    ILWACO The Willapacific Branch of the AAUW will host a panel discussion focusing on physical and mental health questions and providers on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at CCAP next to the Ilwaco Library. Speakers will include Melissa Goldberg, who will address nursing in rural areas; Gwen Meyer, who will focus on womens health; and Eric Cummins, who will provide information on Peninsula programs in mental health workshops for families and individuals.  Following the presentation, a business meeting will be held and refreshments will be served.  The public is invited to attend.     OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Adult Ed/GED

    ILWACO  Grays Harbor College is offering Adult Basic Education/GED classes beginning Sept. 20. Traumatic brain injury

    LONG BEACH Septembers NAMI program will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place in Seaview. A local resident who has an experience with traumatic brain injury will speak about his recovery. This will include a combination of factual/physical and what happened with the mental issues that followed. With little understood about traumatic brain injury, this is a good chance to gain some information. Pizza and salad will be served at 6 p.m., with the program to follow. Art meeting, show & more

    LONG BEACH The Peninsula Arts Association holds their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 at the PUD building on Sandridge Road in Long Beach. After the meeting an art related presentation will be given. Call 665-2661 for meeting information. Additionally, the deadline to enter PAAs 41st Annual Fall Art Show is Sept. 20. Art Around Town

    PENINSULA  Three local artists from Peninsula Arts Association are displaying work a several locations. Linda Halstad is sharing her artwork at the Ilwaco library, open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; Arlene Jaynes paintings are available at the Pacific County building on Sandridge Road, open Monday through Friday; and at the Ocean Beach Hospital, paintings are presented by Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernasek. Most of the art is for sale.

Do Nothing Club

    OCEAN PARK All men are welcome to join the Do Nothing Club held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Lutheran Church at 240th and U Street. This group is a mixture of men from all walks of life. This is a non-denominational club that meets to play cribbage, shoot pool or just sit around having fun and solving the worlds problems. Sustainable Salmon Board

    ABERDEEN  The annual meeting of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership board of directors is set from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Port of Grays Harbor at 111 S. Wooding, Aberdeen. The group is actively working for improvement and recovery of salmon stocks in all river basins flowing into the Pacific Ocean between Cape Flattery and Cape Disappointment, which is the geographic scope of the region. Smithsonian Magazine Day

    LONG BEACH On Saturday, Sept. 24, the World Kite Museum in Long Beach will join participating museums nationwide to open their doors free of charge to all visitors who download the museum day ticket from www.smithsonian.com/museumday. Meditation Retreat

    OYSTERVILLE Portland meditation teacher and therapist Nelly Kaufer will lead a daylong meditation retreat beginning at 9 a.m. until 5:00 pm. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Oysterville Schoolhouse. There will be a potluck lunch. The retreat will offer teachings about a gentle, permissive approach to meditation and small group interviews in which people can share their meditation experiences.     ILWACO  Olde Towne Trading Post, on Lake Street in Ilwaco, hosts a monthly Authors Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for Sept. 28. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Exploring Cascades & Mt. Rainier

Chronic conditions workshop

    ILWACO Living Well with Chronic Conditions, a free six-week course that runs Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov.  17. The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Ocean Beach Hospital in the meeting rooms located at 174 1st. Ave. N., in Ilwaco. You can learn how to live a healthy life with your chronic condition by managing your symptoms. A chronic condition or illness is one a person has to live with for many years. Although there are many chronic conditions, people who come to this workshop often have similar symptoms such as: pain; loss of energy; fatigue and stress; sleeping problems; breathing problems; depression; anger and frustration; and concerns about the future. This workshop was developed by Stanford University.
