Help OP Food Bank

    PENINSULA Heres an easy way to make a difference in your neighbors lives. Local residents purchase one or more extra non-perishable food items when they go shopping and store it in a cool green bag provided by the Ocean Park Food bank. On the second Saturday of every other month, food bank volunteers will pick up the bags and leave another bag. Call 665-6567 for more information.

Hospice volunteer training

    LONG BEACH Harbors Home Health and Hospice will provide volunteer training beginning Sept. 8 and continuing Sept. 9, Sept. 15 and Sept. 16, in the county buildings public meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road. The course will be a total of 20 hours. This is an opportunity to learn about hospice and to gain skills necessary to become a volunteer with this agency. The skills taught are helpful to anyone needing to care for a loved one with a terminal illness. Volunteers provide such services as listening to and recording peoples stories; singing or playing an instrument; swapping old hunting, fishing or logging stories; reading books/papers aloud, or do light housekeeping. Are you a massage practitioner? Do you have pastoral experience? Bunco

    KLIPSAN  The Peninsula Bunco Club hosts a game the second Thursday of each month starting at 6 p.m., at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan Beach. The next game is Sept. 8. Summer camps exhibit

    ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Lake Street in Ilwaco has a new exhibit, Summer Camps on the North Beach Peninsula. Local author and historian Sydney Stevens is the guest curator for the exhibition. She is an alumnus of Camp Willapa and has written extensively on its history. The exhibition will include photographs, objects and stories from Camp Willapa, Camp Sherwood Forest, Camp Morehead, Camp Lily Del Dune (now the Dunes Bible Camp) and Hill Summer Camp. Rod Run

    OCEAN PARK Its coming … the 28th Annual Rod Run to the End of the World is set for Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 at Wilson Field in Ocean Park. The spectator gate opens at 8 a.m., with a variety of fun events scheduled throughout both days, including music, the show and shine, poker run and more. There will be a cruise after the show and shine, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 10. In addition, look for the barrels around the field for non-perishable canned food donations. In addition the city of Long Beach is providing free trolley rides from 3rd and Oregon streets in Long Beach departing at 9:30 a.m., and every 30 to 45 minutes both days, with the last trip to the field at 3 p.m., and the last trip from Ocean Park at 4:30 p.m.

Elvis!

    OCEAN PARK  Back by popular demand, Justin Shandor, the winner of the worlds closest Elvis look-a-like and sound-alike will perform on Saturday, Sept. 10 as part of the Rod Run to the End of the World event. Shandor will perform along with special guests Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline and Connie Francis impersonators. The show will begin at 10 a.m. and go until 3 p.m. You wont want to miss this performance of Elvis of the 50s, the 70s and The Vegas Showman.

Sock Hop

    KLIPSAN  Lets rock! On Saturday, Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., come enjoy music, food and dancing with a live disc jockey at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center! Also you dont want to miss the Beach Barons with their hot rods on display. A prize will be awarded for best 50s outfit so drag out your poodle skirts, slick back your hair, and come have some fun!

Archery meeting

    LONG BEACH  Bear River Archers meet at 9 a.m., the second Saturday of each month at the Bear River Archery range located at 85th and Sandridge, next to Lone Fir Cemetery. Rock & Roll music

    MENLO  A band from Fort Lewis, a rock and roll group, Heavy Left, performs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sept. 10 at the Pacific County Fairgrounds, on Highway 6. There is free admission and the public is allowed to bring picnic items to enjoy during the concert. This is a fabulous group and sure to be a fun event.

Genealogy Fair                                    

    SEASIDE  If you have thought about researching your family history but dont know where to start, your time has come. Attend the genealogy fair that Clatsop County Genealogical Society (CCGS) is hosting at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Bob Chisholm Community Center located at 1225 Avenue A in Seaside. Topics include identifying old photographs, searching the Internet for genealogy information, genealogy publications, organizing your family history and genealogy software demonstrations, heirlooms and the stories they tell and more. Stella Historical Society

    STELLA  The non-profit Stella Historical Society is hosting Remnants of the Past from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, 10 miles west of Longview on SR-4. The event features three buildings with a working blacksmith. In addition at the Stella Lutheran Chapel there are raffles, demonstrations and food. The museum buildings are in desperate need of major restoration work. No outside funding is received, and the buildings are maintained strictly by volunteers, membership dues and donations. Fly A Dragon

    LONG BEACH Want to color a dragon on a kite and to continue the Time of the Dragon theme of this years Washington State International Kite Festival? The World Kite Museum is offering tyvek sled kites to individuals who will decorate them with dragons and come and fly them at One Sky, One World event set for Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 at the Bolstad approach here in Long Beach. You can decorate them with permanent markers or diluted acrylic paint. There are 40 kites available on a first-come-first-served basis. The museum is open daily through September from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Art Around Town

    PENINSULA Peninsula Arts Association members have some of their artwork on display around town. The paintings of Rose Power are being shown at the county building, paintings by Dian Schroeder and James Tweedie are being shown at the Ilwaco library, and paintings by Bev McDonald, Ruth Spani-Phinney, Janet Stomp and the pen and ink drawings of William Vandorin are now on display at the Ocean Beach Hospital.

Do Nothing Club

    OCEAN PARK All men are welcome to join this Band of Brothers known as the Do Nothing Club held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Lutheran Church at 240th and U Street. This group is a mixture of men from all walks of life. This is a non-denominational club that meets to play cribbage, shoot pool or just sit around having fun and solving the worlds problems. Preparing wild game

    LONG BEACH A public class on proper care of wild game is offered from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sept. 14 at the Long Beach Grange on Sandridge Road. While this class is aimed at hunters and their need to take proper care of meat, discussion will also cover raising pigs, cows, etc., and how to properly handle the meat.     ASTORIA The Womens Resource Center in Astoria is offering a 32-hour volunteer training course for individuals interested in working with victims and families that have survived domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Shred day

    LONG BEACH  Great NorthWest Federal Credit Union is hosting a shred day from 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 17 in the parking lot at the Long Beach branch. Bring three or four grocery bags full of items that you would like shredded. There is no cost. Angora Hiking Club

    ASTORIA  On Saturday, Sept. 17, join the Angora Hiking Club for a bike hike. The meeting place is at the West Mooring basin on Marine Drive in Astoria at 9:30 a.m. Carpooling will be arranged for the drive to Westport Ferry. Bikers are required to provide their own bike, helmet, car carrier, water and a lunch. In Their Footsteps

    FORT CLATSOP  Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop is pleased to announce this seasons monthly guest speaker series, In Their Footsteps. This presentation by Carol Lucas will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18. For 21 years, herb specialist Carol Lucas has been in business on Oregons north coast with Natures Sunshine Products. She learned her first herbs at her grandmothers knee; a woman raised on a homestead up in the hills out of Vernonia, Ore. To her grandmother, every plant and animal had a name, and a story or two. Carol is fascinated by the thought that Lewis would have learned even more at his mothers knee, since Lucy, his mother, was a practicing herbalist.  All programs will be held in the Netul River Room of Fort Clatsops visitor center and are free of charge. Singer to perform

    RAYMOND Sunday Afternoon Live will present a special event featuring singer-songwriter Ericka Corban and her band, which includes her husband, Mattaniah and Jeff Perrin, at the historic Raymond Theatre, located at 323 Third Street, at 2 p.m. on Sept. 18. She will be releasing a new album, Daydream, at her appearance in Raymond. Please note this concert is not part of the regular season, and tickets must be purchased for this event. ENCORE gathering

    LONG BEACH  The Lightship Restaurant, 409 Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach, is the location for the September ENCORE Happy Hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 18. All retired or semi-retired adults are welcome, but must be 50 years old or older, and enjoy intellectual stimulation and an opportunity to meet new friends. Lupus, Fibromyalgia & chronic pain

    SEASIDE  The NorthCoast Lupus/Fibromyalgia Support Group meetings resume Monday Sept. 19. While there isnt a scheduled speaker set, this is a great meeting to attend. The format of the meeting is being expanded to include sufferers of chronic pain. Meetings are held at 2 p.m., the third Monday of every month (except July and August) in Education Room A at Providence Seaside Hospital. Construction delays

    PENINSULA Pacific County Department of Public Works, on behalf of Flood Control Zone District No. 1, will place pipe across State Route 103 at 147th Place. This work is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 19. Preparatory work will be completed Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 with construction Sept. 21 and resurfacing on the Sept. 22. Although the roadway will be open to one lane of vehicular traffic at all times, the public is advised of work in this area as delays may occur. AAUW meeting

    ILWACO The Willapacific Branch of the AAUW will host a panel discussion focusing on physical and mental health questions and providers on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at CCAP next to the Ilwaco library. Speakers will include Melissa Goldberg, who will address nursing in rural areas; Gwen Meyer, who will focus on womens health; and Eric Cummins, who will provide information on Peninsula programs in mental health workshops for families and individuals. Fall Art Show

    OCEAN PARK Entries are now being accepted for PAAs upcoming 41st Annual Fall Art Show. The show runs Oct. 7 to Oct. 10; the deadline to enter is Sept. 20. All artists in the show must be PAA members. Full membership application and show registration information may be found at www.beachartist.org. There are 27 categories in this years show. Adult artists may enter up to three pieces and student artists may enter two. Entry fee for adult members is $5 per entry (with current membership). Sustainable Salmon Board

    ABERDEEN  The annual meeting of the Washington Coast Sustainable Salmon Partnership board of directors is set from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Port of Grays Harbor at 111 S. Wooding, Aberdeen. The group is actively working for improvement and recovery of salmon stocks in all river basins flowing into the Pacific Ocean between Cape Flattery and Cape Disappointment, which is the geographic scope of the region.     KLIPSAN  The Peninsula Senior Center, located at 21603 Pacific Way in Klipsan, is hosting a free public program entitled How to Read a Person Like a Book, presented by Dr. Robert Brake on Friday, Sept. 23 at noon. This free program deals with how we communicate nonverbally, how to spot and interpret gestures, facial expressions and other cues, how to spot a lie, and other subjects. Disaster Preparedness Fair

    OCEAN PARK On Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Second Annual Community Preparedness Fair will be held at Ocean Park Elementary School gym at 25701 Vernon Avenue. Come meet folks from NOAA, Washington State Emergency Management, the Department of Natural Resources, plus many more organizations. Plus Schuyler Hoss from the governors office will give a speech with an introduction of the presentation, Japan, Lessons Learned.

Meditation Retreat

    OYSTERVILLE Portland meditation teacher and therapist Nelly Kaufer will lead a daylong meditation retreat beginning at 9 a.m. until 5:00 pm. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Oysterville Schoolhouse. There will be a potluck lunch. The retreat will offer teachings about a gentle, permissive approach to meditation and small group interviews in which people can share their meditation experiences. Sangha by the Sea, a local meditation group, is sponsoring the retreat. Donations are welcome. Birding class

Chronic conditions workshop

    ILWACO Living Well with Chronic Conditions, a free six-week course that runs Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17. The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Ocean Beach Hospital in the meeting rooms located at 174 1st. Ave. N., in Ilwaco. You can learn how to live a healthy life with your chronic condition by managing your symptoms. A chronic condition or illness is one a person has to live with for many years. Although there are many chronic conditions, people who come to this workshop often have similar symptoms such as: pain; loss of energy; fatigue and stress; sleeping problems; breathing problems; depression; anger and frustration; and concerns about the future. This workshop was developed by Stanford University.
