Summer lunch program

    PENINSULA There will be a summer lunch program available for all youth up to age 18 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at six sites around our community, through Sept. 2. They are as follows: from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Skating Lake Park in Surfside, from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Elementary, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Culbertson Park in Long Beach, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Peninsula Church Center in Seaview, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Ilwaco Library and from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Chinook Lutheran Church. Author Readings

    ILWACO Olde Towne Trading Post, the coffee shop across from the heritage museum in Ilwaco, hosts a monthly Authors Showcase the fourth Wednesday evening of the month, with the next gathering set for July 27. Writers are encouraged to come share works in progress or published writings, and everyone is welcome to come hear these original stories. Coffee and goodies will be available at 6 p.m.; writers will sign up for reading slots at 7 p.m. For more information call 665-6576.

Mystery Dinner Theater

    OCEAN PARK July 27, 28 and 29 are the dates for a Mystery Dinner Theater at Ocean Park Lutheran Church. This years mystery, A Plot of Murder, is a story of a fictional community much like Surfside Estates and their neighborhood meeting. The night of mystery starts at 6 p.m., with folks at each table in the audience trying to decide who will be murdered and who will be hauled away in handcuffs. Between courses of the dinner, another portion of the mystery is presented. As the plot thickens, each tables choice of the murderer may change, or they may stay with their original prediction. Tickets must be reserved in advance by either calling the Ocean Park Lutheran Church office at 665-6344 or by visiting the church office at 24002 U Street in Ocean Park, Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and noon. Tickets are $150 for a table of six directly in front of the action, or $20 for general admission on a first come, first seated basis.

Rodeo

    LONG BEACH Peninsula Saddle Club and Brims Farm and Garden are sponsoring the 66th Long Beach Rodeo on July 30 and July 31 at the rodeo grounds located at 6407 Sandridge Road. Each day starts with a cowboy breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the cowboy action starting at      1 p.m. There will be fun events for all ages. Presale tickets are available at any Peninsula Pharmacy for $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors and $4.50 for children ages six to 12.

Weavers and spinners

    SKAMOKAWA Through Aug. 28, Redmen Hall will feature an exhibit of work by the Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild. Made up of artists from Astoria and the Long Beach Peninsula, their focus this year is using recycled materials in spinning and weaving, with the exhibit title Fiber Arts Go Green. They are presenting and selling work done using recycled material and their regular handspun and hand woven items. Kite poster available

    LONG BEACH The 2011 Washington State International Kite Festival poster has been chosen, with local artist Cynthia Pride submitting the winning poster. This poster is called Kites Galore and depicts the beach, boardwalk and kite festival in action. Volunteers 55+ wanted

    PACIFIC COUNTY The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is working to connect veterans living in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties with services, programs and benefits they have earned while serving in our U.S. military. They are focusing on employment issues, but want to help rural veterans connect with other services they might need. The hope is to recruit 20 volunteers to make phone or online contact with local veterans. Volunteers will have a questionnaire that lists authorized questions to present to the veterans. It is anticipated volunteers will serve one hour per week in their attempts to contact local veterans who may be in need of services. Special training for volunteers will be provided. All RSVP volunteers must be age 55 and over. Please contact Jenny Knutson at 360-532-4900 if you are interested in this volunteer veteran project.

Hazard sirens testing

    SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) will conduct monthly testing of the All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens on Monday, Aug. 1, at noon. The AHAB sirens will sound the Westminster chimes for 10 seconds followed by a 15-second verbal message. The PCEMA has requested assistance from Pacific County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services volunteers in tracking the success of the test. Tuna Classic

    ILWACO This years Oregon Tuna Classic (OTC) in Ilwaco gets started on Friday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m., with a mandatory captains meeting in the big tent located in the ports north parking lot. Saturday, Aug. 6 starts early with a shotgun start just across the Columbia River bar and continues with play-by-play action from the weigh-in station. The evening wraps up with a huge barbecue, raffle and the final results of the days activities. In an effort to multiply OTCs contribution to the local food banks there will be a canned food drive on Saturday. Bring a can of food and get an additional raffle ticket. Larry Ford to perform

    ILWACO Tenor soloist Larry Ford (son of legendary singer Tennessee Ernie Ford) will be at Pacific Bible Church, located at 501 N. Pacific Hwy, across from Black Lake in Ilwaco on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. for a concert. Ford is a Grammy winner committed to singing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Edible Garden tour

    PENINSULA Tilth on the Willapa is sponsoring the second annual Long Beach Peninsula edible gardens tour to celebrate, educate, inspire and enjoy productive Pacific County coastal gardening is set for noon to noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7 at seven local gardens from Nahcotta to Ilwaco. Admission is five cans of food or $7 for adults and free for youth under 16 years of age accompanied by an adult. All proceeds from the tour go to local food banks and feeding programs on the Peninsula.     ILWACO This years Blues and Seafood Festival promises to be bigger and badder then ever. The Friday Night All Star Jam, set for Aug. 12, is bringing back the Robbie Laws Band and the newly configured North Coast Blues Band.     OCEAN PARK The 26th Annual Jazz and Oysters Festival will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Wilson Field, 25815 Sandridge Road in Ocean Park. (Please note the change from previous location in Oysterville). Tickets for this event are $15. The festival site will be transformed into a jazz club, complete with oysters, desserts, beverages, sausages and an array of other tasty tidbits. And then come the jazz fans and the music. Kite Festival

    LONG BEACH Mark your calendars now for the 30th Annual Washington State International Kite Festival set for Aug.15 through Aug. 21 near the boardwalk in Long Beach. The week includes competitions by both professional and amateur kite flyers, choreographed kite flies, mass ascensions, fireworks, lighted night kite flies and a variety of other activities. Glow Ball Tournament

    SURFSIDE Surfside Golf Course and the Pioneer Tavern are sponsoring the first Glow Ball Golf Tournament set for Saturday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. It is a two-person scramble, with nine holes played during daylight and nine holes placed at night. The $50 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a barbecue (hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes, pop, beer and glow balls). Transportation will be provided from Long Beach to Surfside. Birding class

    LONG BEACH Discovery Coast Audubon Societys Education Coordinator Mary Atherton will teach a free, one-hour beginning birding class emphasizing finches and warblers at 2 p.m., on Aug. 23 at the Lighthouse Oceanfront Resort in Long Beach. Bake, book & more sale

    LONG BEACH The Chinook Observers third annual Bake, Book and more sale will be Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at our office. If you have any baked goods, books, VHS videotapes, CDs or DVDs to donate to the cause, bring them by our office during normal business hours. Monetary donations are accepted as well. Pacific County Fair

    MENL0 The Pacific County Fair is heading our way. Set for Aug. 24 through Aug. 27 at the fairgrounds located six miles east of Raymond on SR-6 in Menlo, this years theme is, An Old Fashioned Country Fair. Hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. There will be the Haworth Family Shows, carnival, the Percheron draft horses providing free horse-drawn trolley rides, Elvis tribute artist, Jason Whited, a musician, Stormy the clown, and lots more.
