WARRENTON Once again, Team San Jose withstood the Pumas Challenge, as the group from Ocean Park, won yet another La Liga Hispana title over their nemesis on July 13 at the Warrenton Soccer Complex.

San Jose defeated FC Pumas 3-0 to win the championship game of the North Coast mens soccer league, which always draws a big crowd on Wednesday nights at the Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Fields.

Norberto Guzman scored a pair of goals and Armando Guzman added a third to help San Jose win the title.

The same two clubs also met for the championship last year, with San Jose posting a 1-0 win over Pumas.

In Wednesday nights title contest, a fairly even first half ended with San Jose holding a 1-nil lead, as Norberto Guzmans goal in the sixth minute put San Jose on the board.

San Jose peppered the Pumas net with shots on goal by Victor Barantes, Martin Zaravia and Armando Guzman, but several saves by keeper Josh Long and a stiff defense kept the Pumas within striking distance.

In fact, the game would have been tied at the half, if not for an offside call on Pumas, which disallowed a goal by Tomas Pineda in the 29th minute.

The Pumas came out charged to start the second half, but a direct free kick by Daniel Pineda soared over the cross bar, and another shot by Tomas Pineda was knocked down by San Jose portero (keeper) Rafael Terrones.

And San Jose answered the challenge with two goals in a five-minute span, as Norberto Guzman tallied his second goal (at 50:45) off a corner kick by Marcos Tinoco, and Armando Guzman scored in the 55th minute on a low-roller that managed to get past Long into the Pumas net.

Long was able to make the save on a penalty kick by Barantes late in the contest.
