Summer lunch program

    PENINSULA There will be a summer lunch program available for all youth up to age 18 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at six sites around our community, through Sept. 2. They are as follows: from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Skating Lake Park in Surfside, from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Elementary, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Culbertson Park in Long Beach, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Peninsula Church Center in Seaview, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Ilwaco Library and from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Chinook Lutheran Church. SandSations

    LONG BEACH Everyone is encouraged to come enjoy the 27th year of SandSations Sand Sculpture Contest set for July 20 through July 24 in front of the boardwalk in Long Beach. There will be free sculpting lessons on Friday, followed by a beach bonfire Friday night. From novice, to amateurs to professional, anyone can participate in the contest on Saturday, where contestants have five hours to build their masterpiece. While the sculpting is underway there will be a Sand Flea Pet Parade on the beach. Prizes and notoriety are guaranteed in all areas.

Diabetes

    LONG BEACH Gwen Meyer, ARNP, will discuss Diabetes and why it is so important to your blood pressure from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 20 at the Peninsula Church of the Nazarene meeting room at 13th St. N. and Pacific Hwy in Long Beach. Grange potluck meeting

    LONG BEACH Bring something to share and come enjoy a wonderful potluck dinner while visiting with friends and neighbors at the Long Beach Grange on Sandridge Road from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., July 20. Chronic conditions

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital, in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, continues their free workshop open to the public, Living Well With Chronic Conditions, on Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to   3:30 p.m. through Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Ocean Beach Hospital Meeting Room, 174 1st Avenue N., Ilwaco. This program is designed to help individuals who suffer from a chronic condition, including diabetes, asthma, heart disease, chronic pain, arthritis, hypertension and more to lessen their stress and frustration, manage symptoms and deal with fatigue. Toastmasters

    ILWACO  Ilwaco Toastmasters Night Owls group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Ilwaco Community Building. The Lunch Bunch group meets from noon to 1 p.m., on the second and fourth Mondays in the community room at the Ilwaco Community Building.

Free Admission

    ILWACO Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco and the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle are two of more than 1,300 museums across America to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer until Labor Day. The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays are admission free thanks to support from the Port of Ilwaco. Summer Art Festival

     ILWACO  Peninsula Arts Associations 4th Annual Summer Art Festival, set for July 22 through 24, has moved to the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum at 115 Lake Street in Ilwaco. Hours are Friday from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. The new venue provides opportunity for the 20-plus artists to spread out and really show off their handcrafted work in the very best way possible. Jewelry, paintings, paper crafts, wind chimes, wood carvings, silver work, glass, clay, yard art, photography, art cards and hand spun warm and fuzzies are just some of the treasures to be found at this growing festival. This years Garlic Festival poster will also be on sale along with snacks and nibbles (with proceeds benefiting PAAs scholarship program). Admission is free. For more information call 777-8778.

Night at the museum

    RAYMOND The Northwest Carriage Museum at 314 Alder Street in Raymond is hosting a free night at the museum from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 22. Pre-School Registration

    LONG BEACH On Friday, July 22, Head Start, located at 2611 Pacific Highway North in Long Beach, will accept enrollment applications for the fall 2011 pre-school program. Head Start serves children ages 3 and 4 who reside in income-eligible families. Registration requires documentation of income and childs date of birth. Big Band concert

    ASTORIA The United Finnish Kaleva Brothers & Sisters Lodge. 2 of Astoria, and the Finnish American Folk Festival of Naselle are proud to host the Kauhava Big Band from Finland on Friday, July 22, at 7 p.m. You do not need to be of Finnish descent to enjoy this concert. They will present a themed concert Kielon Jaahyvaiset (Lily of the Valley A War Pilots Story) at the Performing Arts Center, 1653 Jerome in Astoria. Tickets can be purchased at the door, at FinnWare in Astoria and at Creative Flaire in Naselle. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Immediately following the concert, a no-host reception will be held at Fort George Brewery.  Fort George Brewery will be specially preparing traditional Finnish sausages, several side dishes and Blue Scorcher Bakerys rye bread. 3-D Shoot

    LONG BEACH Bear River Archers is holding a 3-D shoot Saturday, July 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, July 24, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Bear River Archery on 85th and Sandridge, next to Lone Fir cemetery. The cost is: adults $20 for two days or $12 for one day; youth $16 for two days or $9 for one day; cubs $8 for two days or $4 for one day. There will be 34 targets, plus trophies, food, drinks, door prizes, artwork raffles and kid prizes. (Note: There is no rangefinder for trophy shooters.) Violin virtuoso

    ILWACO The next in the Waikiki Beach concert series is a concert by internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso and composer Kim Angelis, set for  7 p.m., July 23 at Cape Disappointment State Park. Woodfest

    TOKELAND All are welcome to attend the 2nd Annual Tokeland Woodfest at the Tokeland Marina from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24. There will be wood carvers, chainsaw art, woodcrafts, food and live music in the afternoon. Call 360-267-1205 for information.

Weavers and spinners

    SKAMOKAWA Through Aug. 28, Redmen Hall will feature an exhibit of work by the Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild. This is a talented group of artists from Astoria and the Long Beach Peninsula. Their focus this year is using recycled materials in spinning and weaving, with the exhibit title Fiber Arts Go Green. They are presenting and selling work done using recycled material and their regular hand spun and hand woven items. Redmen Hall is located in Skamokawa on SR4 (Ocean Beach Highway) and is open from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. For more information you can call 360-795-3007 during business hours.

Cribbage

    LONG BEACH The Longest Beach Cribbage Club meets every Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Tavern. The play will be according to ACC rules. The cost is $5, with double elimination and 100 percent payback. Anyone with an interest is invited. For more information call 642-3994.

SummerFest

    LONG BEACH SummerFest season is underway in downtown Long Beach. Come downtown and enjoy the free music by Greg Parke with various activities for kids and families. July 20 through July 24 enjoy City SandSations in downtown Long Beach. Also on July 22 is the childrens sidewalk chalk art contest and July 23 and July 24 the Beards Hollow Pirates theatre will be happening. Vespers

    OYSTERVILLE A Vespers service is at 3 p.m., July 24 at the historic Oysterville Church. Pastor Jim Tweedie of Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church will lead the service. Presbyterian Choir will provide the music under the direction of Bob Walters. Karen McNees will be the organist. All are welcome to this casual, uplifting gathering.

Overeaters Anonymous

Volunteers 55+ wanted

    PACIFIC COUNTY  The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is working to connect veterans living in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties with services, programs and benefits they have earned while serving in our U.S. military. They are focusing on employment issues, but want to help rural veterans connect with other services they might need. The hope is to recruit 20 volunteers to make phone or online contact with local veterans. Volunteers will have a questionnaire that lists authorized questions to present to the veterans. It is anticipated volunteers will serve one hour per week in their attempts to contact local veterans who may be in need of services. Special training for volunteers will be provided. All RSVP volunteers must be age 55 and over. Please contact Jenny Knutson at 360-532-4900 if you are interested in this volunteer veteran project.

AA meetings

    OCEAN PARK and SEAVIEW Alcoholics Anonymous has two group meetings on the Peninsula. The Ocean Park group meets at 7:30 p.m., at the Ocean Park Methodist Church at 1202 262nd Place on Mondays and Fridays. Do Nothing Club

    OCEAN PARK All men are welcome to join our own Band of Brothers known as the Do Nothing Club held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Lutheran Church at 240th and U Street. This group is a mixture of men from all walks of life including: electricians, plumbers, glazers, laborers, the aircraft industry, law enforcement, teachers, cooks, deep sea divers, the farm chemical industry and more. This is a non-denominational club that meets to play cribbage, shoot pool or just sit around having fun and solving the worlds problems. Attendees take turns providing lunches for the group. Art Around Town

    PENINSULA Art Around Town was created to display Peninsula Art?Association members artwork at three locations around the peninsula. New artwork is displayed two months at a time. The artist decides if these creations are for sale or for viewing only. Its a great way to show off our local artists. The paintings of Rose Power are available at the county building, also paintings by Dian Schroeder and James Tweedie are being shown at the Ilwaco library, as well as paintings by Bev McDonald, Ruth Spani-Phinney, Janet Stomp and the pen and ink drawings of William Vandorin are now on display at the Ocean Beach Hospital. Thank you to these artists who share their creativity with us!

Hunter education course

    LONG BEACH Sign up now for the Long Beach Police Departments annual hunter education course set for Aug. 1 through Aug. 6. Class size is limited and you must pre-register to attend. Veterans meeting

Rodeo

    LONG BEACH Peninsula Saddle Club and Brims Farm and Garden are sponsoring the 66th Long Beach Rodeo on July 30 and July 31 at the rodeo grounds located at 6407 Sandridge Road. Each day starts with a cowboy breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the cowboy action starting at      1 p.m. There will be fun events for all ages, including a rodeo parade through downtown Long Beach at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 29. Presale tickets are available at any Peninsula Pharmacy for $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors and $4.50 for children ages 6 to 12.

OBH support group

    ILWACO Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics Cancer Support Group will meet Friday, July 29, at 2 p.m. in the Ilwaco Community Building meeting room. The support group is part of the hospitals oncology outreach and education program. Cyndy Soule and Jami Greenfield, members of the hospitals chemotherapy team, will facilitate the meeting. Lions picnic

5K Run/Walk

    LONG BEACH The second annual Domestic Violence Awareness Project 5K run/walk will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m., at the Bolstad beach approach. Registration forms may be downloaded from http://tinyurl.com/3d89tkn, or from the groups Facebook page. Participants can also register at the Long Beach Train Depot (at Third and Pacific North) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 5, and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the day of the race. Entry fees are $27 per person to receive a race T-shirt, or $17 without the T-shirt. The top four male and female finishers will receive trophies at the awards ceremony at the beach pavilion at 11:30 a.m. All event proceeds will be used to help in the awareness, prevention and assist victims of domestic violence. Edible Garden tour

    PENINSULA  Tilth on the Willapa is sponsoring the second annual Edible Garden tour is set for Aug. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. Eight gardens are participating featuring natives plants, organics, chickens, and biochar cultivation. Tickets available at The Planter Box, Jimella and Nancis Seafood Market Cafe, Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, and at the Green Angel Garden booth at the Columbia Pacific Farmers Market. IHS Alumni gathering

    ILWACO The Ilwaco High School Association hosts the 19th annual all-school get together for alumni on Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spouses, family and friends are welcome to gather on the football practice field. Glow Ball Tournament

    SURFSIDE Surfside Golf Course and the Pioneer Tavern are sponsoring the first Glow Ball Golf Tournament set for Saturday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. It is a two-person scramble, with nine holes played during daylight and nine holes placed at night. The $50 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a barbecue (hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes, pop, beer and glow balls). Transportation will be provided from Long Beach to Surfside.
