Comets, Fishermen gear up for 2011 season early

GEARHART Naselle and Ilwaco were among 18 teams preparing for the 2011 football season at Camp Rilea team football camp from July 16 to July 20. Twenty-three Comets and 31 Fishermen players were in attendance. Other local area teams in attendance were Warrenton, Raymond, South Bend and Wahkiakum high schools.

One highlight of the camp was when the Comets and Fishermen clashed in a 7-on-7 passing contest on day two of the camp (Sunday) at the massive Oregon National Guard training center. Players competed in weight lifting and obstacle course races, and played in controlled scrimmages throughout the camp. Coaches had time to introduce offensive and defensive schemes and work on fundamentals in preparation for the upcoming season. The teams stayed at the Camp Rilea barracks and ate their meals there as well.

Paticipating for Ilwaco were: Kasey Plato, Josh Berteaux (injured), Keenan Keeley, Austin Woodby, Justice Schenk, Eric McMillan, Hunter Stockfleth, Zach Ahlin, Keishi Thompson, Keegan Benenati, Aaron Terry, Marcus Cox, Brandon Malmstadt, Tyler Miklos, Edgar Galvan, Jared Mortenson, Roman Hill, Elliot Marcus, Matt Wood, Kienyn Adams, Mike Warner, Peter Keller, Cody Wright, John Pampalos, James Morrison, Adam Hernandez, Ben Lopez, Joe Lurf, Matt MacDonald, Andrew Jones-Merino and Chance Barker.

Participating for Naselle were: Nick Strange, Paul de Montaudouin, Sam and Seth Scrabeck, Dustin and Robert Eaton, Jesse and Tony Lopez, Chandler Chapman, Chris Walkowiak, Brenden Greenfield, Jayson Cooley, Levi Wasmundt, Nick Zimmerman, Trevin Leeland, Brant Arionus, Jake Condon, Beau Santjer, Tanner Hover, Jesse Kimball, Ryley Queener (injured), Adam Jordan and Skyler York.

Awards were given to the linemen challenge, the 7-on-7 passing league and relay winners.
