- Alice “Bobbie” Borchers
LONG BEACH After a lengthy illness, Alice R. Bobbie Borchers, 93, passed away peacefully in the care of her faithful caregivers, on June 20, 2011, at her Long Beach residence.
The daughter of Albert and Helen (Donohue) Borchers, she was born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 17, 1917.
She lived a full and adventuresome life. In years past she played shortstop on a womens semi-pro softball team, which toured Japan and the Philippines in 1938. Later, during World War II, she served in the motor pool of United States Army in the European Theater with her best friend, June Hasty.
In the ensuing years she operated her own chiropractic practice in Southern California, coached softball and was employed and retired from the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, Calif. Forty-nine years ago she and June relocated to the Peninsula, where she continued her many interests including gardening, stained glass, tile-work, volunteering and collecting and displaying mementos from her many worldly travels.
Along the way she and June were instrumental in ensuring that a young lady by the name of Betty Jarrell was able to complete high school and attend college. They stayed active in Bettys life and her family survives including a son, Robert Tobey of Garden Grove, Calif.; grandchildren and their respective spouses, Karen Knudson of Olympia, Robert Tobey of Lansing, Mich., and Richard Tobey of Annadale, Va; and seven great-grandchildren. They will miss her presence and the many Christmases shared together.
A celebration of her full life will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 10:30 a.m., at Penttilas Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach. A reception will follow at the chapel. Her guest book is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
