SOUTH BEND The Pacific County Sheriffs Office has reported that on Friday, April 1, people cutting firewood in a heavily forested area south of South Bend had discovered possible human remains. PCSO deputies were dispatched to the scene and determined that the remains were in fact human.

Were actively investigating the incident, PCSO Chief Criminal Deputy Pat Matlock said this week. He said the remains had been in the woods for a significant amount of time. Well be exploring all missing persons cases and will be attempting to match up dental records to get an identity.

The remains have not been identified and the circumstances surrounding their location and the manner of death are under investigation. Matlock said the remains appeared to be of an adult but could not determine if they were male or female.

I hope we can get an identification, he said, but it could take a couple of weeks.
