Fall prevention

LONG BEACH – On Thursday, April 23, Olympic Area Agency on Aging nursing services is offering two free presentations on ‘Staying Independent through Fall Prevention.’ The first will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at PACE in Ilwaco and the second from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Long Beach Retirement, 800 N. Washington. The training includes tools to prevent accidental falls and covers topics such as reducing hazards in the home, how to recognize personal hazards, how exercises can increase your strength, flexibility and balance, nutritional recommendations, etc. A free DVD will be made available to those who attend the presentation. ILWACO – The Sailor’s Feast will be held at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the museum or at one of the many Ilwaco port merchants. ASTORIA – Radio listeners will want to tune in on April 24 at 2 p.m. to ‘eTown’, a National Public Radio program carried by KMUN, 91.9 FM. Shelly Pollock, one of the principals behind the Grassroots Garbage Gang, will be interviewed by the show’s hosts, Steve and Helen Forrester, about the three annual Beach Clean-up events on the peninsula’s 28-miles of beach. ‘eTown’, which airs weekly, is taped in front of a live audience and features performances from some of the country’s top musical artists as well as conversation and information on environmental issues and other community-action topics.

Salad luncheon

NASELLE – Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 25, for the annual salad luncheon held at the Naselle Lutheran Church at 308 Old Knappton Road. Black Lake derby

ILWACO – The 17th Annual Black Lake Fishing Derby, a kid-only trout catching extravaganza at the well-stocked Black Lake is set for April 25 from 7 a.m. to noon. Children 14 years old and under will be able to participate in a variety of contests and activities with prizes awarded by age group for the biggest catch, highest aggregate weight ratio of the participant to fish and more. There is no cost to participate and no license is required.

Clamming

PENINSULA – A razor clam dig is scheduled on the Long Beach Peninsula from the Columbia River north jetty to Leadbetter Point on April 25 through April 27, pending marine toxin tests, with digging allowed between midnight and noon. Low tides those days are as follows: Saturday, April 25, 8:33 a.m. -0.8; Sunday, April 26, 9:16 a.m. -1.1; Monday, April 27, 10:02 a.m. -1.2. Harvesters are allowed to take no more than 15 razor clams and must keep the first 15 they dig, regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. Licenses are available at numerous local businesses.

Cribbage

LONG BEACH – The Longest Beach Cribbage Club meets every Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Chautauqua Lodge in the Anchor lounge at 14th Street and Ocean Beach Boulevard. LONG BEACH – The Hockley family, which includes Rod, Karen and Jennifer, will be at Oceanview Baptist Church at 2707 Pacific Avenue in Long Beach (across from Peninsula Golf) performing at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The Hockleys perform southern gospel music in a variety of venues including at revival meetings, missions conferences, in nursing homes, prisons and more. LONG BEACH – The SandSations Committee is on the hunt for SandSations T-shirts from the past 25 years. Water Music benefit

SEAVIEW – During April, every Tuesday night the 42nd Street Café will set aside 10 percent of their sales to benefit the Water Music Festival Organization. This year Water Music Festival is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of bringing high quality music of various genres, including classical and jazz to the Peninsula. ASTORIA – The Clatsop County Women’s Resource Center (WRC), in conjunction with Clatsop Community College, will hold its annual fundraiser – the Community Soup Bowl on Thursday, April 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the “Red Building,” located at 20 Basin Street in front of the Cannery Pier Hotel. Those attending can buy a one-of-a-kind, kiln or wood-fired bowl of their choice commemorating this event to take home. Tickets are $30 for soup and a bowl and may be purchased in advance at Lucy’s Books, the Déjà Vu Thrift Shop, the Cannon Beach and Seaside Chambers of Commerce and the WRC office. Amnesty from traffic fines

PACIFIC COUNTY – South District Court for Pacific County is offering a “collection amnesty program” throughout the month of May. Designed to help those with outstanding traffic tickets and fines, the court and their collection agency have agreed to waive interest and 40 percent of collection costs. For those paying by credit card an additional $25 will be added to the balance owed. The court is offering the 30-day program from May 1 through May 31. ILWACO – The Loyalty Days kid’s parade is Saturday, May 2 at noon in downtown Ilwaco. Come enjoy this great parade and support kids. After the parade head to the Ilwaco boat basin at the Port of Ilwaco. Boats leave the dock at 1 p.m. for the blessing of the fleet. The memorial service includes a free scenic boat ride.

Oyster feed & honors banquet

Loyalty Day

LONG BEACH – Sunday, May 3, the day starts with a cowboy breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Peninsula Saddle Grounds on Sandridge Road. For a minimal fee you will get a great breakfast. Then kids can enjoy a ride on a fire truck from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the new Ilwaco fire hall. The main events of the day start at noon in downtown Long Beach with guest speaker Jim Getty aka Abraham Lincoln. At 1 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard flyover starts the parade. One-Act Play Writing

ILWACO – Submit your one-act play by May 5 to Peninsula Players, P.O. Box 383, Ilwaco, WA 98624. All submittals must be family appropriate material and be 10 to 30 minutes in length. If your play is selected it will be performed at the One Act Play Festival at the end of August. Local writers are encouraged to submit material for community theater. Emergency preparedness

LONG BEACH – The Pacific County Health Department will hold an emergency preparedness tabletop exercise on May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The focus of this exercise will be: request, receiving, storage, security, distribution and prioritized usage of strategic national stockpile (SNS) supplied antivirals. They will discuss how to determine who will get the medications and in what order of priority they will get them; where the medications will be stored; and who and where will they be distributed. There will also be a review and exercise of the hospital’s pandemic influenza plans. This exercise will take place at the new south Pacific County Administrative Building meeting room at 7013 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. Light refreshments will be provided. AARP Driving class

KLIPSAN BEACH – There will be a driver-safety class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. The mature driver class consists of two four-hour sessions on two separate days and covers a wide range of driving situations. There are no tests. LONG BEACH – The Culpepper Merriwether Circus is coming on May 25. Hosted by the Lions Club, the circus will be set up just south of the Bolstad approach in a lot on the dunes. NW Garlic Festival

OCEAN PARK – The 28th Annual Northwest Garlic Festival sponsored by the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce is coming June 20 and 21. This year the event will be held on Wilson Field, also known as the Beach Barons Rod Run Field. This will allow off-street parking and more space for the vendors and entertainment. Besides the garlic crafts and food, there will also be local artists, crafters and entrepreneurs at our event. The entertainment this year again is top notch! On Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. come and listen to the Beaver Boogie Group and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Fabulous Farelanes are back! On Sunday, June 21, the Beaver Boogie Group returns to entertain from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then beginning 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the Southern Breakdown Band will be on board. Even though there will be picnic tables available it is a good idea to bring your chairs and blankets to sit a spell and listen to the music after you have visited the vendors.
