VANCOUVER – Jewell M. Hooker, 92, died Aug. 14, 2008, in Vancouver. She was born Jan. 20, 1916, on a farm near Grant City, Mo., to Orvia Nelson Elliott and Mary Evaline Lowell-Elliott.

She graduated from Grant City High School in 1934. On Jan. 28, 1935, she married Oscar Wood Gladman, with whom she had one son, Donald Oscar Gladman. In September 1937 the family moved from Missouri to Gresham, Ore.

On Oct. 30, 1939, she married Marion A. (Ted) Butler at Stevenson. They made their home at Bridal Veil, Ore., where they worked in a box factory. In 1954 they moved to St. Helens, Ore., where she owned and operated the Golden Rule Nursing Home for many years.

Then on Aug. 24, 1958, she and Joseph E. Hooker were married. They adopted Lloyd and Susan Adams, who were her deceased sister’s children. The couple then moved their family to a ranch near Clatskanie, Ore., and kept several boarders for the next 16 years.

They retired to a home in Long Beach in 1978, where Mr. Hooker died on April 19, 1989.

She loved people and was busy taking care of them for more than 40 years. Her hobbies were photography and writing books full of poetry. She was a member of The Latter Day Saints Church of Jesus Christ and had been since 1963.

Mrs. Hooker is survived by her sons, Don Gladman and his wife, Jackie, of Portland, Ore., Lloyd A. Adams of Portland; a daughter, Susan M. Galloway of Clatskanie; a sister, Rosemary Alloway of Yakima; brothers, Russell H. Thackery of Clatskanie and Franklin T. Thackery of St. Joseph, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and very dear friends.

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m., on Aug. 22 at Murray Hills Cemetery, 90 SW Hall Road in Clatskanie, Ore.
