OLYMPIA – Albert August Yunker passed away on Aug. 15, 2007 at Providence Hospital in Olympia. He was born on Aug. 5, 1919, in Portland, Ore., to Albert and Mildred Yunker.
Mr. Yunker was an Army veteran of WWII and served in the European campaign. After WWII he married Ellen Ross on July 27, 1946, in Portland. They spent their early-married life in Butte, Mont., and on the Oregon coast near Toledo. The couple then moved with their young family to Clearwater where they made their home until 1968 operating the Ranch Motel. In addition to operating the motel they raised Black Angus cattle and Mr. Yunker was a road engineer for Jefferson County. In 1968 they moved to Long Beach and operated the Driftwood Motel and Trailer Park for more than 20 years. He also worked at the Long Beach Post Office and retired in 1987.
He served the communities where he lived in numerous ways including serving on the school board for the Queets-Clearwater school district and assisting with the Long Beach Loyalty Day parade.
He thoroughly enjoyed following the various sporting teams, which included high school, college and professional. During his final years in Raymond he spent time tending his chestnut orchard.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ellen; daughters, Kathleen Quirico (Jimmy Herr), Linda (Ron) Britton and April (Craig) Hawkinson; sons, David (Diann) Yunker, Ralph (Gayle) Yunker, Leslie Yunker, Albert (Donna) Yunker and Paul Yunker; his grandchildren, Kimberly, Tommy, Brandie, Jesse, Lisa, Craig, Kristen, Joshua, Kyle, Ashley, Mathew, Mitchell, Elyssa and Danni and nine great-grandchildren.
He was a man of integrity and his work ethic was an example to follow. He was loved by his family and will be deeply missed. The family hugs will continue in heaven.
A memorial service will be held at the Ocean Park Community Church in Ocean Park at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 12.
