SURFSIDE – The Lady Fishermen golf team continued their winning ways and Kylie Lewis was again the medalist as they defeated North Beach and Willapa Harbor in a match Thursday at the Surfside Golf Course. Using the Stableford method of scoring Ilwaco amassed 39 points to 16 for North Beach and 11 for Willapa Harbor. Ilwaco is now 4-0 in matches this season.
Lewis’ 23 points were better than either of the other two teams and the sophomore nearly defeated their combined output. Marcella Morris added eight points, Brenda Agnitsch chipped in five, Kayla Wood added three and Madeline Dickerson scored two points even though only the top four totals were counted in the team standings. Lewis earned first place by a landslide and Morris placed third and Agnitsch was fourth overall.
Coach Jeff Lewis said, “Kylie continues to play consistently solid golf and Brenda and Kayla had solid rounds today and are improving rapidly.” He added, “Marcella has struggled some with a back injury this year, but she played a strong match in her first varsity competition this season.”
Hannah Whitlow, Erin McDonnell, Marin McDonnell and Amy Veland played a nine-hole scramble for their junior varsity match and shot a commendable stroke score of 51.
Coach Lewis said, “The competition for the five varsity spots is becoming increasingly keen; all nine of our players have a realistic chance to be in the top five for any given match. That kind of competition is healthy for the team and will make all the girls better players. It is a luxury to have that much depth.”
He concluded by saying, “We are now at the halfway point of the season. The first half has been terrific. If the girls keep up this level of improvement we will be sending a very strong contingent to the district tournament in May. I am proud of the effort shown so far this year by the girls.”
