Obituaries: Richard “Dick” Mason

VANCOUVER – Richard “Dick” Mason, 89, died of natural causes on Feb. 7, 2007, in Vancouver.
The third of three children born to Glenn and Emma Mason, he was born Aug. 30, 1917, in Spokane, where he was raised primarily by his grandparents and his older sisters.
After serving in the military during World War II, he moved to Portland with his wife, Irene Neal, whom he had married on Aug. 31, 1938. He was a salesman for Wesson Oil and Schuss Wholesale Grocers, before going to work for S. E. Rykoff Wholesale Grocers from whom he retired.
He and his wife were members of the Columbia River Yacht Club, where Mr. Mason served as commodore. Their boat, The Nosam (Mason spelled backwards) took part in many opening day festivities.
The couple retired to Ocean Park where they had enjoyed beach life for the past 30 years. They were members of the Ocean Park Lutheran Church. They had recently returned to Vancouver to live.
Survivors include his wife, Irene of Vancouver; son Tom and his wife Deanna of Portland; granddaughters, Susan (Andy) Rembert of Eagle River, Alaska, Julie (Gary) Culp of Portland; grandsons, Mike Provis of California and Mark (Jessie) Mason of Gresham, Ore.; as well as five great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Chelsea, Cole, Shaun and Madison.
At his request, no service will be held. Gifts may be given in his name to Ocean Park Lutheran Church. Oregon Cremation Company of Portland, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.
