Letter: Flood management lacking around Surfside’s Skating Lake

Published 4:00 pm Tuesday, December 5, 2006

After reading the complaints of others about the problems due to the actions of the County Flood Control, I feel compelled to add my own to the list.

I live on Skating Lake in Surfside. Four years ago the county diverted floodwater off of “M” Street into Skating Lake. The lake has an outflow pipe, but it has proven inadequate for handling the extra water being diverted into the lake. The old pipe was replaced by a smaller pipe, so that carries even less water than the older one. Because of this, and the rainfall, my land is being flooded over. I have lost several feet over the last four years.

Several of my neighbors and I have asked the county for help with our problem, mainly to replace the smaller pipe with a larger one. The county keeps saying “next year” and that they don’t have the funds to take care of the problem (that they have created), etc., etc., etc.

Now the county has laid more pipe to funnel even more water into the lake. How can they afford to do that when they cannot fix the outflow pipe? They seem to have the cart before the horse. Now with more water coming into the lake and no relief of the excess, I am afraid of the water coming up to my deck and undermining my home. I want my land back that the county has taken over by their inept handling of diverting floodwater.
