SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters Disability Board has changed its regularly scheduled meeting to Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. for the month of October. The meeting will be held in the EOC Room in the Public Safety Building on 300 Memorial Drive, South Bend.

Shoalwater Birders

OCEAN PARK – The Shoalwater Birders meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11 in the Ocean Park Library. The meeting will feature Troy Guy, a biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who will present a show and tell on “How I spent my summer vacation: Aleutian Island Seabird Cruise.” In addition, Ray Milner from the Planter Box will talk about the future bird-friendly gardens and trails at the Sea Resources Hatchery in Chinook. Everyone is welcome.

Art around town

PENINSULA – Members of the Peninsula Arts Association are showing their work around town. At the Ark Restaurant you’ll find by Marie Dimond; the Ilwaco Library has paintings by Edith Turner and LaVeda Dedericks; Maxine Brown has watercolors at the Chinook Observer; featured artists at Ocean Beach Hospital include Vivian Easter and Sharon Bernesek. Wes Moehnke’s watercolors are at Tips and Toes. The public is encouraged to stop by and check out these great displays.

Auditions underway

OCEAN PARK – Auditions for Peninsula Players’ upcoming Christmas Show, “Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas,” (based on the books by Robert Fulghum, adapted by Ernest Zulia and David Caldwell, with music and lyrics by David Caldwell) will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11 and Friday, Oct. 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church at “U” and 240th. FridayCranberrian Fair

ILWACO -The Ilwaco Heritage Museum sponsors the Cranberrian Fair, which is Oct. 13 through Oct. 15. Growers will be harvesting cranberries at the farm by the Cranberry Museum located at 2907 Pioneer Road. Additionally, you can eat all things cranberry and enjoy the artisans who will include quilters, weavers, basketry, rug hooking and many more. You can purchase a Cranberrian Fair button for $5, which provides entry to the Ilwaco Heritage Museum, the hourly shuttle to the Cranberry and Kite Museums and more. Don’t miss out on the music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Cranberry Museum. There will be live music by Nevada Slim and Cimarron Sue, whose music honors working and movie cowboys and cowgirls.

Cranberry treats

ILWACO – On Saturday, Oct. 14, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. enjoy tasty Cranberry treats at the Port of Ilwaco! As a fundraiser for the Ilwaco Heritage Museum, businesses located along the waterfront at the Port of Ilwaco will host visiting restaurants for a “Cranberry Bite At The Port,” a Cranberrian Fair event. Nine restaurants are providing free samples of their favorite cranberry cuisine to visitors who purchase a Cranberrian Fair button (available at the Port of Ilwaco shops or the Ilwaco Heritage Museum). The Depot Restaurant will be at Nautical Brass, Chinook Coffee Company will be at Time Enough Books, Beach House Cafe will be at the Crew House Gallery, Long Beach Coffee Roasters will be at the Azure Salon and Spa, The Shoalwater Restaurant will be at the Shoalwater Gallery, 42nd Street Cafe will be at Wade Gallery, and the Imperial Schooner, Port Bistro and Tuscan Cafe on the Port. Fall Decor

ILWACO – The Columbia River Organization for Artists is holding a pre-Halloween, fall decor sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the PACE activity room in the Ilwaco Community Center. Come support this event.

Volunteer @ Refuge

WILLAPA – Volunteers are needed to help keep the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge’s Salmon Art Interpretive Trail open during the upcoming salmon spawning season. Normally, the Salmon Trail is open only Monday through Friday but the refuge would like visitors to be able to view the salmon run on weekends as well during the spawning season. A training/orientation session will be held Saturday, Oct 14 at 10:30 a.m. to noon at Refuge Headquarters for anyone interested in volunteering. The training session will teach volunteers about the restoration of the stream, basic salmon biology, and the natural history of the area. Wild Thyme

CATHLAMET – On Oct. 14, beginning at 7:30 p.m. the Pioneer Church proudly presents Wild Thyme, a musical troupe which plays an irresistible array of jigs, songs, jokes and reels. Their music is passionate, rambunctious and fun. Wild Thyme engages audiences with the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland and a tall tale or two. ILWACO – On Saturday, Oct. 14 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Ilwaco Heritage Museum continues their celebration by honoring the 150 year birthday of Cape Disappointment. The $5 admission button gives you admission on all three days of the Cranberrian Fair, plus a ride on the shuttle to the bogs and the Cranberry Museum. Flu Shot Clinics

OCEAN PARK – The Peninsula Senior Activity Center is hosting flu shot clinics that are sponsored by Okie’s Sentry. Flu shot clinics will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 15 and Oct. 22 (subject to vaccine availability). The shots are for all those 12-years-old and older. SEAVIEW – The Grass Roots Garbage Gang is holding a community fund night at 42nd Street Cafe in Seaview from 4:30 p.m. to

9 p.m. on Oct. 18. The 42nd Street Cafe will donate 20 percent of any purchase that evening. Water Music

PENINSULA -The Water Music Festival is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 22, with concerts at numerous venues on the Peninsula. On Friday, Oct. 20, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center in Sea-view, enjoy the classical duo of Shangrow-Cohan Duo, whose performances on modern as well as period instruments are superb. Joining them will be award-winning guest artist soprano Anne-Carolyn Bird. Tickets are $15. On Saturday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at Peninsula Church Center, organist John Jantzi will perform. A former University of Oregon Graduate Teaching Fellow, Jantzi is a world-renowned organist and pianist. His concert is free. At 2 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Oysterville Church, The Bottom Line Duo will perform. Traci and Spencer Hoveskeland play the cello and bass and are accomplished musicians. Tickets are very limited for this performance. On Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Peninsula Baptist Church you are sure to enjoy the sounds of the Quartet San Francisco, a classical string ensemble taking on a traditional string quarter repertoire plus jazz, funk and pop. Tickets are $20. The final concert of the festival is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22 at Peninsula Baptist Church and features the Pacific Brass Quintet, a group of Seattle musicians who play classical as well as ragtime, swing and popular selections. SOUTH BEND – The annual meeting of the Pacific County Historical Society is at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22 in the commissioners’ meeting room at the Pacific County courthouse annex in downtown South Bend. Following a brief business meeting, which will include proposed bylaw changes and election of officers, the program will feature Willapa Harbor author Doug Allen. Allen, a retired high school history teacher, is a South Bend native who has authored four books and a number of articles and papers on Pacific County history. NASELLE – Naselle Timberland Library presents Preschool Story Time from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Oct. 24 for children ages 3- to 6-years-old. Help your child build vocabulary by attending story time. Safety awards

ILWACO – The American Legion’s Nineteenth Annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Legion Post in Ilwaco, on Lake Street, across from the Post Office. Six people who protect our safety on the Long Beach Peninsula will be honored at ceremonies after the dinner. Writers’ Boot Camp

ILWACO – If you are one of those people who have always wanted to write a novel or for those who have started one and would like some help, this writers’ weekend is for you. The weekend will be presented by Barbara Haines Howett. The “Passion for Words Workshop” is Friday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Inn at Harbour Village. In addition to Haines Howett, workshop leaders include Elizabeth Lyon, veteran book editor and author of books for writers, and Birdie Etchison, award-winning author.
