WESTPORT – The Naselle volleyball team did not stay on the losing side of the ledger very long as they won their next match over Ocosta after losing to South Bend in five games in their previous outing.
Naselle swept the Wildcats in three games in their last non-league match of the season Tuesday with nothing but “counting” Pacific League matches starting at Raymond this Thursday.
The Comets’ clean sweep was earned by game scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-23. Naselle’s non-league season record climbed to 6-1, plus an undefeated record in the season-opening jamboree of short games.
The Comets and Wildcats went through seven changes of serve before Naselle took the lead for good in game one. Prior to that time, Ocosta had small leads for most of the early play with Naselle tying, taking a small lead and then falling behind again. Naselle trailed 13-16 when Ashley Ahlstrom got the serve for the second time in the game. NHS scored seven straight points behind Ahlstrom’s serves, pushing their lead to 20-16 and they didn’t trail again. The Wildcats rallied to get within a point before losing the serve, but Jenny Klinger then served the final four points for the Comets 25-20 win.
Game two turned into “a walk in the park” as the Comets grabbed the early lead and did not let it go. Naselle led 11-4 after three changes of serve and added to that lead through each rotation. The Wildcats made a small run by scoring four points in a row, but the Comets, with their game working well, cruised to their 25-14 win.
In game three the Comets trailed by a point or more through the early going and trailed by five points before Sylvia Herrold’s four straight service points brought the Comets back. Naselle then stayed within a point or two until they rallied behind Klinger’s four straight service points that turned the tide in Naselle’s favor at 20-18. The Comets were not to lose that lead except for a tie at 21. Naselle then got to game and match point at 24-23 before Ahlstrom’s serve produced the game and match point in the Comets 25-23 win.
Ahlstrom’s serving, especially in games one and two, led the Comets. Klinger’s serving in game three helped to seal the verdict. Ahlstrom racked up 19 service points, Bighill 15 and Klinger and Herrold 11 each in the match. Herrold led the attack with 14 kills and 13 blocks. Bighill, with 37 assists and Klinger, with 14 assists, set up most of the Comets points in their decisive win.
