Obituaries: Iris Plyter

LONG BEACH – Iris Plyter, 86, of Warrenton, Ore., passed away at Ocean View Convalescent Center on Sept. 29, 2006.

The daughter of Lily A. (Tohl) and Ernest A. Worthington, she and her identical twin sister, Irma, were born Nov. 21, 1919, in Tillamook, Ore. She weighed three pounds. The twins were so small they were carried on pillows.

She grew up on the Long Beach Peninsula and graduated from Ilwaco High School. She married Peter Plyter in 1938, after meeting him at Fort Canby.

Mrs. Plyter managed the health food department at Astoria Feed Company, a business started by her husband Pete. She then worked at First Interstate Bank in Astoria for 24 years, retiring in 1984. Later she worked at Plyter’s Pets. Her family, church and her piano music were important to her.

Survivors include her brother Vernon Worthington; two children, Sandra Ostgard and Duane Plyter; three grandchildren Lance Hobbs, Eugene Hobbs and John Plyter; seven great-grandchildren, Kyle Hobbs, Reyna Hobbs, Aleah Hobbs, Marley Hobbs, Stephanie Ramsey, Brian Robertson and Tyler Robertson; and one great-great-grandchild Olivia Rivera. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter, her twin sister Irma, brother Loren Worthington, sister Elnora Kolb, her parents and one great-granddaughter, Kaylee Hobbs.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Oct. 7, at Caldwell Luce-Layton Mortuary at 1165 Franklin Avenue in Astoria. Memorials may be made to Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice through the funeral home.
