Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Events Schedule

Through Nov. 15, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Corps of Discovery II: 200 Years to the Future. A National Park Service traveling exhibit, which will be in the lot behind Ford Electric and Double R rides.

Through Nov. 15

Enjoy the Estuary at the Port of Ilwaco. Each day there will be a safety program with displays including Seamore, the water safety sea monster, a railroad locomotive computerized simulator, a Coast Guard lifesaving vessel and an Army humvee used in the Middle East. There will also be a Coast Guard helicopter landing. There will also be displays on The Chinook River restoration, Sea Resources watershed education center, the Lower Columbia River Water Trail and other such projects.

Lewis & Clark Book Breakfasts at Independent Books. Located in the Sandpiper Mall at 110 Pacific in downtown Long Beach. Have a light breakfast and have L&C books signed by authors. Call Independent Books at 642-8438 for a schedule of authors.

Ocean in View Nickel Exchange. At the Elks in Long Beach. Hosted by the Bank of the Pacific, this will be an opportunity to exchange cash for the recently released Ocean in View nickels.

L&C Film Festival – “Journey of Sacagawea” with Barb Kubik. Free performance at the Neptune Twin Theatres.

L&C Film Festival – “On the Trail with Lewis and Clark.” Free performance at the Neptune Twin Theatres.

Military Band Concert. At Ilwaco High School gymnasium. This is a free concert performed by the National Guard Band to who perform an assortment of present and historic military music.

Nov. 11 thru Nov. 13

L&C Quilt Show. At the Pacific Coast Cranberry Museum, 2907 Pioneer Rd. in Long Beach. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Nearly 100 Lewis and Clark quilts plus quilt blocks will be on display. A raffle quilt depicting scenes from the journey will also be on display. Call Karen at 642-8585 for more information.

L&C Charter Boat Tours. Departing from the Port of Ilwaco. See the land as Lewis and Clark saw it – from the river. Reservations required. $60 per person. Call Jill at 642-2400.

“Ocian in View Program” What Has Happened To Lewis & Clark’s Lower Columbia River?: An Ecologist and Historian Offer Answers. $10 per person admission, at Hilltop Auditorium, 442 Brubach St. N.E., Ilwaco

Nov. 12 and Nov. 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“O, How Horriable is the Day!” This is a free event at the Knappton Cove Heritage Center, 521 State Route 401. Enjoy guided walks to the river beach, children’s crafts and a special medical exhibit in the old Quarantine Hospital. The event will include a special medical exhibit honoring Dr. Benjamin Rush, noted surgeon who gave medical instruction to Capt. Lewis for the Corps of Discovery’s trip preparation.

Nov. 12 and Nov. 13, 7 p.m.

The Waters Speak. At Hilltop Auditorium, 442 Brubach St., N.E., Ilwaco. This is a mystical performance of Native American songs, dances and stories, including original compositions inspired by Native melodies. This event features three award-winning, internationally known artists. Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for children under 12 and may be purchased by calling (206) 325-6500 or at the door.

“Ocian in View Program” Exploration Then and Now: Conversation with Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar and Captain William Clark. $10 per person admission at Hilltop Auditorium, 442 Brubach St. N.E., Ilwaco. NASA Astronaut Dunbar and Bud Clarke, representing his ancestor, Capt. William Clark, will delve into the similarities between the 19th Century journey of L&C and 21st Century space exploration. Rex Ziak will moderate the program and field questions from the audience.

Nov. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hiking through History. At Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco. Trained volunteers will be stationed along the half-mile trail to the summit of McKenzie Head. Visitors can also take the short hike to Clark’s Oceanside campsite and learn about their time spent at Cape Disappointment. There is no charge to park in the shuttle parking lot or to ride the bus to McKenzie Head. $5 parking fee in the park. Call 642-3078 for more information.

“We Shall Gather at the River” is a special church service led by Rev. Ken Henry at the Knappton Cove Heritage Center, 521 State Rt. 401 (three miles east of the Astoria-Megler Bridge). Be sure to dress for the weather. Hot cider will be served.

“Ocian in View” Hollywood vs. History. $10 per person admission, at Hilltop Auditorium, 442 Brubach St. N.E., Ilwaco. Dr. Robert Carriker, professor of history at Gonzaga University, Donna Kessler Barbie, author of “The Making of Sacagawea,” and returning Sacagawea expert Amy Mossett will lead a robust investigation into the life of Sacagawea. They will explore her significance in American Western History and how she became a national symbol.

Lewis & Clark’s New Look. Free admission to this event at Hilltop Auditorium in Ilwaco. Gary Moulton, L&C scholar and editor of the L&C’s journals, takes an in-depth look at the characters and personality of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as they related to late 20th Century interests.

Nov. 15, noon to 1 p.m.

Chinook-Haida Intertribal Trade Re-enactment. This re-enactment will demonstrate how trade occurred between two coastal tribes in the many generations of interactive trade with tribes along the Pacific Coast and up the Columbia River. A free activity at the Chinook County Park.

Re-enactors at the Pacific. This will be a re-enactment of the arrival at the Pacific Ocean by the L&C Discovery Expedition. Parking is at the Port of Chinook with a shuttle to the event site. Once the Corps has arrived by water, there will be recounting of the modern day journey and the original arrival 200 years ago, and President Jefferson will reflect on the Corps’ trip.

Nov. 18, 9 a.m.

Condor Dedication – At Port of Ilwaco boat launch. Sculptor Bart Kenworthy will unveil his bronze full-size replica of a California condor, one of which was collected by the Corps of Discovery for President Jefferson. Joe Burnett of the Condor Reintroduction Program will comment on condor ecology. A free event.

Nov. 18, Times to be announced.

Confluence Project: Artworks by Maya Lin. At Cape Disappointment State Park. The artwork will include: a viewing platform on the north side of the boat ramp at Cape Disappointment, a cut-basalt fish-cutting table in the boat ramp area, and an outdoor amphitheater at Waikiki Beach. A pathway leading to this area will be inscribed with the names of Native American tribes the explorers encountered.

Nov. 19, 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Clark’s Last Mile – The walk begins at the beach approach on Sid Snyder Drive in Long Beach and goes up the Discovery Trail to Clark’s Tree, with re-enactors interpreting the walk. There is no charge for this event.

Nov. 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Commemoration of the Vote at the Pacific. A free activity at the Chinook County Park.

1) Shuttles for the “Ocian In View” programs run from Ilwaco Heritage Museum to the Hilltop Auditorium for visitor parking.
