LONG BEACH – The Pacific County Interagency Coordinating Council (PCICC) Birth-to-Five Committee meets on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at the P.U.D. building on Sandridge Rd. Local members represent health departments, medical providers, school districts, parents, service providers and other public and private agencies. The PCICC/Birth-to-Five Committee provides leadership and a forum for the establishment and maintenance of coordinated, collaborative continuum of comprehensive birth-to-five services to families, including those with special needs. GHC groundbreaking

ILWACO – Beginning at noon, Thursday, Aug. 25, the public is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony for Grays Harbor College’s new education center at 208 Advent Street in Ilwaco. Then from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., GHC will host an open house at their present site, 118 Lake Street S.E., in Ilwaco.

FridayIlwaco middle school

ILWACO – The Ilwaco Middle School will hold student registration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26. In addition, there will be an orientation for incoming seventh grade students and their parents from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31. Surplus/garage sale

OCEAN PARK – Pacific County Fire District No. 1 will hold a surplus/garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26 and Saturday, Aug. 27 at 26300 “R” Street in Ocean Park. Included in the items for sale are computer equipment and miscellaneous fire department items as well as members’ personal and household items. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Pacific County Fire District No. 1 Firefighters Association.

Applegate to sign

ILWACO – Author Shannon Applegate will be signing copies of her newest book, “Living Among Headstones, Life in a Country Cemetery” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26 at Time Enough Books at the Port of Ilwaco. This book is described as an “insightful and unexpected book about death and life, from a female sexton of a country cemetery.”

SaturdaySt. Jude golf tournament

LONG BEACH – ESA Alpha Theta will hold their annual golf tournament to benefit St. Jude’s beginning at 10 a.m., Aug. 27 at the Long Beach golf course. It will be a scramble shotgun start and the fee of $40 includes 18-holes of golf and lunch. All golfers are welcome.

Bee Safe Day

MENLO – The 2nd annual Bee Safe Day at the Fair will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Pacific County Fair from 9 a.m. to noon. Willapa Valley’s student leadership organizations: FFA, FCCLA, and FBLA will be hosting several local, county and state agencies to provide a one stop safety fair. Each agency will have experts on their safety issue, handouts and free items. Pacific County Sheriff’s office will be giving out bicycle helmets this year.

Lions 50th anniversary

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Lions Club will celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a dinner at the Elks Lodge on Saturday, Aug. 27. The social hour is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the dinner will begin at 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. Please contact Al Harper at 642-8322 for more information.

MondayConfluence project groundbreaking

CAPE D – On Monday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. at Waikiki Beach in Cape Disappointment State Park, the Pacific County Friends of Lewis & Clark invite you to a brief groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction of three artworks for the Confluence Project. Artworks at Cape D will include a circle of driftwood cedar logs, a basalt fish-cleaning station and a bayside overlook. These installations will be connected by a trail between Waikiki Beach and Baker Bay when the isthmus area of the Park is remodeled. This is the first of seven Confluence sites in Washington and Oregon; all are along the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Maya Lin, the renowned artist who designed the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., is designing artworks for all Confluence sites. LONG BEACH – His Supper Table Thrift Store, a 501C3 agency, is open at their new location, 4601 Pacific Hwy., Seaview, Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations are welcomed. Proceeds from the store go to support the food program.

ROSBURG – There will be a Meth Watch presentation at Rosburg Hall at 6 p.m. Aug. 30. The purpose is to discuss ways to curb the spread of methamphetamines in the community. OCEAN PARK – The Peninsula Arts Association’s 35th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival will run from Sept. 1 through Sept. 5 at Squidleys on Vernon (Hwy 103) and 259th in Ocean Park. The Festival starts with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. Open to all PAA members, work must be original, no more than two years old, and not previously entered in any PAA show. Entries and fees will be accepted from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 29. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1 through Sunday, Sept. 4, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5. There will be divisions for professionals, non-professionals, youth (6- to 13-years old), and high school (14- to 18-years old), plus there will be a special Lewis and Clark category for all media. Book Sale

OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Timberland Library presents the Friends of the Ilwaco-Ocean Park Libraries Memorial Day Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2 through Sunday, Sept. 4. Pick up some great reads at bargain prices. In addition, on Sept. 4 beginning at 2 p.m. there will be a bag sale – bring your standard paper grocery bag and fill it for $3. Some books are individually priced. Most are $1 for hardbacks and trade paper and $.50 for paperback. Money raised will be used to support local libraries.

Heritage festival

OCEAN PARK – Mark your calendars now for the Heritage Festival in the Park on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4 in Ocean Park. Saturday’s events run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and include a variety of foods and hand-craft demonstrations. Lyn Halderman will play polka music from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Fabulous Farelanes will perform from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Sunday, events again start at 10 a.m., with original arts and crafts and fun games for everyone. Lyn Halderman will again play polka music from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the River City Band will perform.

Chinook arts festival

CHINOOK – The first-ever Chinook Arts Festival is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3 through Sept. 5, in the parking lot just west of Chinook Coffee Company. Organizer Debbie Patana of the Inspirations glass studio in Chinook, says there’ll be a variety of art, including lots of stained glass, Victorian wooden screen doors, mosaics, photography, watercolors, caricatures and demonstrations, including glass marble-making. There will also be live performances by local musicians Al Carson and Damian Mulinix. Hours of the festival are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. CW line dancing

ILWACO – Country western line dancing returns to the American Legion building on Lake Street in Ilwaco (across from the post office) beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7 and every following Wednesday through December. New beginners class is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; continuing beginners class is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and intermediate/advanced class are from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $2 per person per class. End-of-summer

PENINSULA – On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Port of Ilwaco will host the 2nd Annual Baker Bay Kayak and Canoe Race. Registration begins at noon and the 10K competitive race starts at 2 p.m.

The same day a Beach-to-Chowder Challenge foot race will be held, with the race starting in Ilwaco. Then come join the fun in the Long Beach on Sunday, Sept. 25 for the Great Peninsula Chowder Challenge, a friendly face-to-face chowder grudge match of area restaurant professionals. The public is invited to come taste and vote for their favorite. To make this a truly family affair, games and contests for the kids, and entertainment are in the planning as well.

Camp Victory

OCEAN PARK – Camp Victory, a recreational camp for young girls in Pacific and Grays Harbor counties who are survivors of sexual abuse, is now accepting applications for their 2005 session.

The four-day camp will take place in a safe and secluded retreat center on the Long Beach Peninsula and is open to girls between the ages of 5 and 18 years, free of charge. Girls needing additional information or a camp application can contact the Camp Victory office in Ocean Park at 665-2888 and leave a message with name and phone number.
