Wednesday, July 13Dragon visit

OCEAN PARK, NASELLE – From 11 a.m. to 11:45 at the Ocean Park Timberland Library and from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Naselle Timberland Library come enjoy “The Dragon Who Came to Visit” on July 13 for children of all ages. Help mad scientist, Dr. Cranium, perform science experiments with machines, heat exchange, molecular properties, and more. SEAVIEW – The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark will hold its monthly meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 13 at the Shoalwater Restaurant. The meeting includes a no-host luncheon. All those with an interest are encouraged to attend.

Make bath salts

OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Timberland Library presents “Make Your Own Bath Salts” from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., July 13 for teens. There is nothing like a warm bath after a day of jousting and juggling. Learn to make your own bath salts at this workshop. Materials are provided. This event is part of the library’s summer program for teens, “Joust Read.”

Shoalwater Birders

OCEAN PARK – Bev Arnoldy will tell all about the nesting habits of the great blue heron at the 7 p.m. meeting on July 13 of the Shoalwater Birders at the Ocean Park Timberland Library. According to Arnoldy, the herons tolerate her family living near them, and as she will explain, this is not altogether an ideal situation. Everyone is welcome to attend this quarterly meeting.

Wacky days

OCEAN PARK, NASELLE – Ocean Park and Naselle Timberland Libraries present Wacky Days at the library. At Ocean Park, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at Naselle it is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children of all ages. Find three wacky things at the library Wednesdays through July 27 and win a small prize.

HST thrift store

LONG BEACH – His Supper Table Thrift Store, a 501C3 agency, is open at their new location, 4607 Pacific Hwy., Seaview, Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations are welcomed. Proceeds from the store go to support the food program.

Bagpipers and drums

OCEAN PARK – On Thursday, July 14, beginning at 7:30 p.m., the Ocean Park Retreat Center will host a concert featuring world-renowned Scottish bagpipers and drum musicians. The community is invited to attend this event that will include Scottish and other Celtic music on alternative styles of bagpipe, whistles and percussion instruments. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 65 years old and older, and youth under age 18. Tickets are available at the door.

Art Walk at Port

ILWACO – The Ilwaco Harbour Village is setting sail with their first Art Walk of the season, Thursday, July 14 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This first event is hosted by Don Nisbett’s “Crew House Gallery” and activities will include new shows at all the galleries, painting demonstrations, refreshments, music and, as always, a great free raffle. This year, Ilwaco is host to two new galleries and an outstanding sculpture garden. All the shops and restaurants will be putting on their pirate eye-patches, so come and stroll along the marina on Waterfront Way and enjoy the fun. Call 642-2291 to learn more.

CROA meeting

ILWACO – The Columbia River Organization for Artists (CROA) will meet at the Ilwaco Community Center in the PACE activity room on Thursday, July 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Meetings will be held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. FridaySandSations

LONG BEACH -The 21st Annual SandSations sand sculpture contest begins July 15 with last-minute registrations and sand sculpting lessons on Friday, starting at 3 p.m., followed by an old-fashioned beach bonfire at 6:30 p.m. This fun-filled event will be located at the Bolstad beach approach in downtown Long Beach. Summerfest fun

LONG BEACH – The weekend of July 15 through July 17, there will be lots happening in downtown Long Beach. On Friday, there will be the Operation Lifesaver train display, children’s face painting, and more.

Bald Eagle Festival

CATHLAMET – The 24th Annual Bald Eagle Festival starts off with a street dance at the historic town dock on Broadway Street on Friday, July 15. The new Miller 40s band featuring Sunrise Fletcher will provide the entertainment. Then on Saturday, July 16, the day begins with the Bald Eagle Run-Walk Challenge. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The Main Street festival will begin at 11 a.m., with the parade. This year’s theme is “Traditions Alive in 2005.” Make sure you are there early to enjoy the Chamber of Commerce’s delicious buffalo burgers. There will be activities all day with birds of prey, an art show, tours of the historic Julia Butler Hansen house, and a kid’s activity area with a climbing wall donated by the U.S. Army. After a day in the sun on Main Street, stroll down to the Elochoman Marina for the beer garden and concert. The beer garden opens at 6 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. Finally on Sunday, enjoy the wooden boat show starting at 10 a.m. There will be food and street vendors, a Coast Guard rescue demonstration along with kids building small wooden boats. A trout pond for the kids, swap meet and dinghy races will be some of the entertainment. On Sunday, you can also enjoy watching an antique saw mill demonstration at the Wahkiakum Historical Museum from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The museum will be open for tours.

SaturdaySandSations cont.

LONG BEACH -The 21st Annual SandSations sand sculpture contest located at the Bolstad beach approach in downtown Long Beach continues on Saturday, July 16 with the main sand-sculpting contest. Teams get started at around 10 a.m., and the Sand Flea Pet Parade begins at noon. Free hotdogs are available all day. Railroad Days

ILWACO – All aboard for the Clamshell Railroad Days July 16 and July 17 at the Ilwaco Heritage Museum. The exhibits will feature railroad displays, layouts and various events. The museum is located at 115 S.E. Lake Street. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 642-3446 for more information.

Starving artist sale

OCEAN PARK – On Saturday, July 16, the Peninsula Arts Association is holding its annual Starving Artist Sale from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ocean Park library. The event is open to the public and will include a variety of works, with the top price for any item no more than $50. There will be unframed, unmated offerings, many at bargain prices. Twenty percent of gross sales goes to the Peninsula Art Association Scholarship fund. Come and join in the fun.

Summerfest fun

LONG BEACH – On Saturday, July 16 as part of the Summerfest events, enjoy the Humane Society adopt-a-pet-a-thon, a silly pet tricks competition, poetry reading, children’s face painting and other fun events. Come downtown and check out the action.

SundayOutreach at the Beach

OCEAN PARK – Through July 17, local area churches are sponsoring Outreach at the Beach 2005. This weeklong event held at Sheldon Park includes spiritual devotions at Peninsula Assembly of God, Peninsula Baptist, United Methodist Church, Ocean Park Community Church, Pacific Bible Church, New Life Assembly of God Church, and The Upper Room Fellowship Church. Vespers service

OYSTERVILLE – Come join Father Blaine Hammond of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Seaview as he leads the Vespers Service beginning at 3 p.m., on Sunday, July 17 in the historic Oysterville Church. Mezzo-soprano Christine Brass will perform accompanied by Karin McCullough. Bonnie Masson will play the organ. The Vespers Service is a “come as you are event,” so don’t hesitate to stop by and enjoy this uplifting celebration.

Al-Anon in Rosburg

Art Around Town

PACIFIC COUNTY – The month of July finds Peninsula Arts Association members displaying at the following sites: In the Coast Grille and Lounge, Judy Leonard offers her paintings of Peninsula animals and Marilyn Casey displays her watercolor seascapes. At the Chinook Observer find woodcut hand paintings by Bernice Puzauskas, as well as work by Marilyn Casey and Mary Ann Hirst. In the Ocean Beach Hospital, there is a collection of art by Joan Taplin, plus paintings by Allan Carson. Oceans of Art has paintings by Wes Moehnke and the classic car portraits done by Ann Thompson. Additionally, Marilyn Casey’s watercolors are at the Ark Restaurant in Nahcotta. All locations welcome visitors to their displays and the Peninsula Arts Association artists hope you enjoy their work.

Reptile man

OCEAN PARK, NASELLE – Ocean Park and Naselle Timberland libraries are hosting “The Reptile Man” on July 20 for children of all ages. Reptile zoologist Scott Peterson will be at the Ocean Park library from 11 a.m. to noon and at the Naselle library from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. with his lizards, snakes, turtles and Lucy the alligator. Don’t miss the show and discover the importance of each animal in the balance of nature. People may pet certain animals after the show. All dangerous snakes have been surgically devenomized.

Beach MUG

ILWACO – The Beach Macintosh Users Group (MUG) will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20 at the Ilwaco High School library. The meetings are open to all levels of users.

Alateen meetings

SEAVIEW – Alateen meetings are held every Wednesday beginning at 6:30 p.m., at 4603 Pacific Highway in Seaview. Alateen is a confidential group for young people who have family members or friends whose lives have been affected by alcohol and drugs, or both.

Honoring Chinook

SEAVIEW – St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Ocean Park Lutheran Church will be presenting the second annual “Honoring the Chinook” ceremony from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 23 at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 “N” Place, Seaview. Featured will be a dinner and a service of worship, which will include a talking circle. Elders will have the opportunity to say something about themselves and the Chinook people. Family Fun

SEAVIEW – Family Fun Vacation Bible School will be held at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 “N” Place, Seaview from 5:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, July 26 through Friday, July 29 for children 4-years-old through sixth grade and their parents. This event is a Lewis and Clark program showing how Jesus’ teaching and ministry parallels the Corps of Discovery expedition. There will be music, skits, dinner, Bible lessons, crafts and games. Long Beach Rodeo

LONG BEACH – The 60th Annual Long Beach Rodeo will be held July 30 and July 31 at the rodeo grounds, 6407 Sandridge Rd., Long Beach. Family night starts Saturday after the rodeo and features fun events for all ages. There will be vendors, concessions, clowns, music, pony rides, mechanical bull, barbecue and beer garden and more. A cowboy breakfast is offered from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., both days.

Bead baking workshop

ASTORIA – Join the community-wide effort to make thousands of trading beads for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration Trading beads made from bakers-clay (flour, salt, and water) are being given away in the Kids Corps Discovery Area at Festival of the Pacific, a three-day event at Clatsop County Fair Grounds. A baking workshop is offered Saturday, July 30, at the Bob Chisholm Community Center in Seaside. At the end of the session participants will know how to make and paint the beads and receive one batch of dough and sample paints and sealer. Nickel launch

ILWACO – On Aug. 5 at 10 a.m., the newest nickel in the Westward Journey series will be launched at Cape Disappointment. Coin designers will be on hand to sign rolls of nickels. There will be a nickel exchange of the “Ocean in View” nickel and the Sacagawea golden dollar. Federal, state, tribal and local officials will participate, including the Deputy Director of the United States Mint, David Lebryk.

Jazz & oysters

OYSTERVILLE – Enjoy jazz and oysters on the yard of the historic Oysterville School on Aug. 14. Featured band will be the Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group, a true all-star band, who members are widely viewed as tops in the Northwest. Their group’s collective resume reads like a “Who’s Who” of jazz, blues and soul. Mark your calendars now for jazz and oysters.

Women’s workshop

NORTH BEND – Women can learn the basics of fishing, hunting, and other outdoor skills in a workshop Sept. 16 through Sept. 18 at Camp Waskowitz Environmental Learning Center near North Bend. The workshop is coordinated by Washington Outdoor Women (WOW), a non-profit program dedicated to teaching women outdoor skills and natural resource stewardship. Some 20 classes will be offered throughout the weekend on subjects such as archery, basic fishing, fly fishing and tying, canoeing, preparing fish and shellfish, big-game hunting basics, map and compass reading, practical wilderness medicine, survival skills, wildlife identification and more. A total of 40 instructors, including several WDFW staff members, volunteer their time and expertise to connect women with the outdoors. Participants must be at least 18 years old to attend the workshop and must have a Washington recreational fishing license to take part in the fishing and fly-fishing sessions. The workshop fee of $190 includes two days’ lodging, meals and the use of all necessary equipment. A limited number of partial scholarships are available for the workshop.
