Music and dance

ASTORIA – In the spirit of passing on a traditional music and dance style, Gina and Hobe Kytr teach the second session of the Old Time Music and Dance Class on Wednesday nights from March 30 through June 1 at Shively Hall in Astoria. New students are welcome! The class is designed for beginning and intermediate dancers or musicians. Clogging and other traditional old time dance styles will be taught. No partner is necessary. Tsunami workshop

SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency and Washington’s Emergency Management Division sponsor a summit meeting March 30 at Tokeland’s Tradewinds on the Bay Motel to discuss tsunami response, evacuation, mitigation and planning for the north Willapa Bay area. The program is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The workshop features presentations from state and federal earthquake and tsunami experts, as well as from local and state emergency managers on such topics as tsunami hazard assessment, evacuation and warning systems and programs for damage mitigation.

ILWACO – River City School of Arts and Crafts offers these classes each Thursday. FridayBluegrass Festival

LONG BEACH – The first-ever Bluegrass Festival is in Long Beach April 1 through April 3 with five bands participating. The event kicks off at 3 p.m. April 1, and takes place in the downstairs area of the Long Beach Elks Building. All three days of the festival are open to the public. The Bluegrass Festival is sponsored by the Long Beach Merchants and the city of Long Beach. Admission charges for Friday ($15) and Saturday ($20) are good for all day. Sunday features a free Gospel concert. Tickets are available at the door.

Kidstuff fund-raising

CHINOOK – During the month of April, All Season’s Kidstuff will give 100 percent of the selling price on all donated items to the Martha Murfin (F.I.S.H.) Community Assistance Account. To help, clean out your closets and prepare like-new items for donation (call for instructions). Drop items off at Al1 Season’s Kidstuff during business hours. Mark items to be donated to the Martha Murfin account. Watch for the May in-store posting of money earned. This is a chance to help our “energizer” with one of her many causes. SaturdayGorse control

LEADBETTER – Volunteers are needed to help pull the highly invasive gorse from several trails in the Leadbetter unit of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Those participating should meet at the Leadbetter parking lot at the end of Stackpole Road at 10 a.m., April 2. Volunteers should bring a long-sleeved shirt and leather gloves. Golf scramble

LONG BEACH – On Saturday, April 2, there is a Night Glow Golf Scramble at Peninsula Golf Course. The cost is $25 a person. A portion of the proceeds benefits the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Spring concert

ASTORIA – The North Coast Symphonic Band presents its Spring Pops Concert, directed by Richard Boberg, at 3 p.m., April 3 at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center, 16th Street and Franklin Avenue. Among other songs, the group will be performing “Victory at Sea” from the World War II television series. Pre-concert entertainment begins at 2:30 p.m. Regular admission is $8; seniors and students $6; and children under 12 are $4.

MondayTheater performance

KLIPSAN – The Peninsula Theater Group will present a one-act comedy skit at 1 p.m., Monday, April 4 at the AARP meeting at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Everyone is welcome, admission is free. Don’t miss out on this fun event.

Model Railroad Club

OCEAN PARK – Anyone interested in railroading is invited to the next Peninsula Model Railroad meeting at 7 p.m., April 4 at the Ocean Park Library. The topic is how to put lettering on train cars. The purpose of the club is to share interest and skills, help members build and maintain layouts, and to promote interest in model railroading. The club is co-sponsoring a “Railroad Days” weekend at the Ilwaco Heritage Museum. The club includes all model train gauges and skill levels. Meetings are the first and third Monday of each month. CHIINOOK – From 10:30 a.m., to 11:45 a.m., on April 8, All Season’s Kidstuff in Chinook is hosting another Kidshare family friendly meeting session for parents and kids. Russian ensemble

SEAVIEW – On Sunday, April 10, at 2:30 p.m., the Valaam Ensemble from Russia will be performing a concert at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview sponsored by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The Ensemble consists of five male voices that sing unaccompanied. The repertoire includes a variety of music from northern Russia, including folk, chant and religious music. The Ensemble is currently touring North America, and will also stop in Astoria. There will not be a charge for the event, but a freewill collection will be taken to help the Ensemble with expenses.

Quilt Guild

SEAVIEW – The next meeting of the Peninsula Quilt Guild is at noon, April 11, at the Peninsula Church Center, 5000 “N” Place, Seaview. The potluck begins at noon. Bring a salad, dessert, tea sandwiches or rolls. Installation of new officers will follow potluck. Remember donations of non-perishable food for F.I.S.H.

Community forum

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Police Department is hosting a Community Forum beginning at 7 p.m., April 12 in the Super 8 conference room. All merchants and citizens with questions or concerns are encouraged to attend this open meeting – any suggestions for the community are welcome. This is an excellent time to discuss unlawful issuance of bank checks, shoplifters, theft and emergency situations, or any other issue you wish to discuss. Hope to see you there!

Art show

OCEAN PARK – The Peninsula Art Association is hosting their Spring Art Show beginning April 14 and running through April 24 at 259th and Vernon Ave., in Ocean Park (in the log cabin-style building). The public is invited to attend between 9 a.m., and 5 p.m. A reception, open to the public, will be held Friday, April 15 from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m. For artists, entry blanks are available at both Ocean Park and Ilwaco libraries as well as at the Visitors Bureau, at Pacific Printing and at Oceans of Art. Entries will be taken Monday, April 11 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. There are many categories, including two for Lewis and Clark-themed art. All artists are welcome to enter, and may have five entries. Pat Fagerland will be the featured artist at the event.

Public comment desired

PORTLAND – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a public hearing at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 12 to discuss plans for continued maintenance dredging of the Columbia River federal navigation channel from River Mile (RM) 3 through RM 192. The hearing will be held at the Port of Vancouver located at 3103 Lower River Road in Vancouver.

Kite Festival poster

PACIFIC COUNTY – Entries are requested for the Washington State International Kite Festival Poster contest. Entries are to be delivered to Campiche Studios at the corner of Pacific Way and Bolstad in Long Beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., until April 20. Judging will be on April 21. To be considered, all artwork must be no larger than 32-inches wide by 17-inches high for horizontal entries; or 17-inches wide by 32-inches high for vertical entries; and is not to be smaller than 11-inches by 14-inches. A 2-inch border will be added later on the left, right and top, and a 5-inch border will be added to the bottom for the title block. It is preferred that entries be unframed. The artist will receive a royalty of $2,000 upon completion of all signing and numbering of posters. There will be a limited edition printing of 400 posters to be signed and numbered by the artist. Previous winners are excluded from entering the competition for a period of four years.

Fred Houston fund-raiser

OCEAN PARK – From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., April 15, come enjoy a spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church on “U” St., in Ocean Park. This event is a fund-raiser to help Fred Houston and his family with medical expenses. The cost is only $6 for adults, $3 for youth, and children under 6-years-old get in free.

Power of Treaties

OLYMPIA – The public is invited to “The Power of the Treaties,” a symposium on Treaty law and policy, to be held in Olympia April 15-16. Tribal speakers, including Billy Frank, Jr., Brian Cladoosby and Pearl Baller will join non-tribal speakers, including Gov. Christine Gregoire, Sen. Daniel K. Inonye and State Historian Dave Nicandri in discussing the relationship of treaties and state policy, cultural resource protection, health care, the environment and education. Spring Cleanup

PACIFIC COUNTY – Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 23 and our next quarterly cleanup. Formal start time is 9:30 a.m., but the Dumpster and dump trucks will be in place in the early morning hours, available to start accepting collected garbage. The popular after-cleanup thank you lunch will again be served to all volunteers at the Peninsula Senior Center. We need more adopt-a-beach groups and existing adopt-a-beach groups can always use more hands, so if you are motivated to get more involved, contact Shelly at 665 5338 so we can match your location and interest to our needs for community volunteers.

Country living author

OCEAN PARK – On April 25, Nahcotta Oyster Farm will host a no-fee gather at the new reception hall of the Whalebone House in Ocean Park for Carla Emery, author of the Encyclopedia of Country Living. She will speak about the petroleum depletion, why it will happen, when to expect it, and what you can do to protect your family.
