IHS boys top Ocosta 39-28 in home win

Big third quarter lifts FishermenILWACO – Jarod Schaak’s 21 points and 10 rebounds elevated the Fishermen over Ocosta 39-28 at home Tuesday in a SWW League tilt.
“I’m happy,” the 6-foot 4-inch post player said following Ilwaco’s first win of the season. “I was able to put the ball in the hoop, and Jordan Williams gave me some good passes and scored some big baskets as well,” Schaak remarked.
A big third quarter saw Ilwaco out-score the visitors 15-4 and stretch their lead to 30-12 at the end of 24 minutes of play. The Fishermen had led 15-12 at half-time of the soccer-like contest.
A very low total of 79 shots were taken from the floor in the game, with Ilwaco hitting on 18-43 for 42 percent, and the Wildcats converting on 13-36 for 36 percent. The Fishermen were 2-7 from the line for 28 percent; Ocosta did not shoot a freebie as Ilwaco was called for only nine infractions and the Wildcats seven.
Ilwaco out-rebounded the Wildcats 27-20, but turned the ball over 17 times to 15 for Ocosta. Williams passed for five assists, and Dylan Wirkkala handed out four more of the 12 the Fishermen had in the game. Wirkkala and Joe Goelz scored three points and Scott Fagerland, Peter Gaynor, and Mooch Smith each chipped in two for the winners.
Ilwaco evened its SWW record to 1-1, and Ocosta plummets to 0-3 on the season. No JV game was scheduled.
