Adele H. Doolittle

LAKE OSWEGO, ORE. -Adele H. Doolittle, 86, a constant visitor to the Long Beach Peninsula for the past 23 years, died peacefully at home in Lake Oswego, Ore., on Nov. 23, 2004, due to complications of lung cancer.
Mrs. Doolittle was born on Nov. 14, 1918, in Wilkinsburg, Pa. She met her husband of 59 years, Edgar, while both were students at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. After completing their undergraduate studies, they were married in Pittsburgh on June 26, 1943. Following her husband’s wartime service in the U.S. Navy, they moved to New York City, where she completed her master’s degree at New York University while he pursued his law degree.
When her husband was employed as a vice-president by The Boeing Company in 1959, they moved to Seattle area. While raising their three daughters, Mrs. Doolittle also worked as an office administrator for 25 years at several Seattle area universities.
After her husband’s retirement from Boeing in 1980, he was hired as a business advisor to a young Saudi prince. The Doolittles moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for five years, during which time Mrs. Doolittle worked as the prince’s office manager and they traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Following their return to the U.S. in 1985, Mrs. Doolittle worked as the office manager at Overlake Park Presbyterian Church in Bellevue, a position from which she retired in 2000 at the age of 82.
The Doolittles began visiting the Long Beach Peninsula when their daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Tony Kischner, moved to the area to operate the Shoalwater Restaurant in Seaview in 1981. They loved the beach and were annual supporters of the Water Music Festival from its inception.
Mrs. Doolittle is survived by her daughters, Ann Kischner of Ilwaco; Beth Doolittle of San Francisco; and Susan Spence of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; granddaughters Jennifer Steen of Edmonds, Michelle Kischner of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Paris Spence of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and a sister, Carolyn Tippins of Pittsburgh, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband in April 2002.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19, at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, West Linn, Ore. Remembrances may be made to the Sisters of Holy Names – Adele Doolittle Memorial Garden, 17440 Holy Names Dr., Lake Oswego, OR 97034.
