Letter: A lesson in human kindness

I own a small business here on the Peninsula, and recently a client of mine did something that at the time I thought was very cute. It made me laugh, so I shared it with others. By the time she returned home from her Thanksgiving holiday, everyone she knew shared with her that now they know too. I couldn’t wait to see her to tell her of this cute thing she had done. But when she came in and I saw the hurt, disappointment and embarrassment on her face, you might as well have driven a stake through my heart right then and there.
It was no longer “cute.” Though I’m like most people and would never intentionally hurt someone, I did just that. So I too am hurt, embarrassed and certainly disappointed in myself. As she left my shop we hugged and I told her how sorry I was, and as the true lady she is, she said it’s over and forgotten.
But I want to apologize to Mrs. Ruth Duscha publicly for two reasons. One, I’m truly sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I have caused you, and two, maybe it has not only taught me a lesson, but will make someone else think before they speak out of turn. I believe everything happens for a reason. I’m just sorry it was at Ruth’s expense.
