Dorothy Annabelle Long

ILWACO – Dorothy A. Long, a 35-year resident of Klipsan Beach, died May 12, 2004, in Ilwaco at the age of 93.

Born June 15, 1910, in Whitefish, Mont., she was the daughter of Hugh and Amelia (Belhorn) Conroy. She grew up near Spokane and attended local schools. After graduating from high school she attended Washington State University, graduating in 1930 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics.

She was a dietitian whose first job was in Havre, Mont. She later trained at the 1,800-bed Veterans Administration Hospital in Heinz, Ill., near Chicago. Continuing her career she worked at the Veterans Administration hospital in Helena and later in Portland. When the new V.A. hospital opened in Seattle, she became chief of the dietetics department. She continued working in that position until her retirement in 1970.

On Feb. 15, 1954, she married Frederick C. Long. The couple lived in Seattle until they moved to their summer home in Klipsan Beach in 1970 making it their permanent retirement home. They renewed their marriage vows in a special ceremony in 1993. Mr. Long died in 2000.

In earlier years Mrs. Long enjoyed fishing and gardening with her husband. For many years they traveled to Mexico and spent the winters in LaPaz on the Baja Peninsula.

The last member of her natural family, she was preceded in death by her brother William F. Conroy. She is survived by her niece, Carol Ann Barnickol of St. Louis, Mo., and her close friend and caregiver Ursula Kopp of Ocean Park.

Funeral mass was held on May 14, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Seaview. Vault interment followed at Ilwaco Cemetery. Arrangements by Penttila’s Chapel by The Sea.
