CATHLAMET – In early May, the Board of Wahkiakum County Commissioners unanimously adopted a motion to enter into formal discussions for acquisition of the Cathlamet Medical Clinic from PeaceHealth.

Additionally the commissioners authorized negotiations for acquisition of the Cathlamet Clinic property.

After much discussion on possible alternative plans, the commissioners concluded that county ownership and operation of the Cathlamet Clinic is currently the only way of keeping the clinic open. Under county ownership, the commissioners hope to receive Rural Health Clinic status, a move that should increase government reimbursement rates for services provided at the clinic.

More than 4,000 residents of a three-county area rely on Cathlamet Clinic for their health care.

Under this complex plan, Wahkiakum County expects to continue to operate the clinic in its present site at 335 Una Street, with the current clinicians planning to remain in Cathlamet. The transition could be effective by Dec. 31.

Area residents should contact their elected state and federal representatives to let them know how important Cathlamet Clinic is to each family and ask our representatives to increase funding for health services in the region.
