The Lady Fishermen lost a double header to Castle Rock 9-0 and 12-2 at home Friday in a Trico-League match up. Ilwaco is now 1-7 in league and 2-12 overall.
“We played some of the best softball of the season,” coach Rick Bishop said. “We held down one of the top teams in the state for the last five innings of game one and the first two of the second game. Unfortunately we did not play seven solid innings in either game.”
In the first contest Ilwaco turned three double plays off line drives, and Nicole Adams pitched very well after the first inning, according to Bishop. The Lady Rockets took advantage of 7 bases on balls and 5 wild pitches that resulted in scores in the first frame to take a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Fishermen were unable to score despite solid base hits from Adams, Ashley Kitzman, Cody Jenkins, and Ashley Garrett.
Ilwaco enjoyed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of game two when a dropped fly ball in the outfield with two outs eventually resulted in 4 unearned runs.
“We showed emotion and I was pleased with how hard we played,” Bishop said of his team. He also had praise defensively for Adams, who shifted to shortstop in the second contest. The Lady Fishermen scored in the first on singles by Adams and Ashley Kitzman, and in the second on a solid single from Heather Bartlett and Adam’s RBI base knock.
The Lady Rockets then ran off 12 unanswered runs to defeat Ilwaco via the 10-run rule in the night cap 12-2.
Randy Bloom’s JV team lost 14-1 and 16-4 decisions in Castle Rock because there were no fields available at Long Beach Friday.
“Our pitching problems seemed to be solved by Anna Kitzman and Bethany Heimbigner, but we committed too many errors to win, even though we played our two best games of the season,” he praised.
Kitzman, Tara Hankins, and Sam Engel each had two hits in the double dip. Bloom had praise for the defense of outfielder Monica Smith and shortstop Amber Stanley.
