Peninsula hosting L&C stamp events next week

PENINSULA – The official stamp ceremonies taking place at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco will kick off the Lewis and Clark weekend activities, May 14.
At 9 a.m., the Postal Service will issue the first release of the commemorative stamps at the enhanced Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Open to the public, the event will be followed by a similar ceremony at the Fort Clatsop National Memorial in Astoria at noon.
The full schedule of events is as follows: Friday, May 14, 9 a.m., at Cape Disappointment State Park, Washington State Parks will host the U.S. Postal Service’s Commemorative Lewis and Clark First Day Issue Ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend, purchase stamps and have them postmarked.
At 7 p.m., May 14, at the Ilwaco Heritage Museum, celebrated Lewis and Clark author and storyteller Rex Ziak will present “Hanging by a Thread” – the many factors which perfectly aligned to help the Corps through the dangers of the trip. Suggested donation is $5 per person; seating is on a first-come basis.
On Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., enjoy Lewis and Clark sites bus tours, narrated by Rex Ziak. Buses will depart from the Ilwaco Heritage Museum. Cost is $25 per person. Also on Saturday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Long Beach Bolstad beach approach, enjoy a 1904 Lewis and Clark Centennial kite fly, presented by the World Kite Museum. Flyers will be launching replicas of the massive winged box kite that Silas Conyne flew at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, when he achieved the highest and longest fly in a competition against hot air balloons, gliders and other kites.
