Two NHS teams take top honors at regional Knowledge Bowl meet

OLYMPIA – Naselle High School took four teams to a regional knowledge bowl meet on Monday, Nov. 24, at the Evergreen State College in Olympia. The Naselle teams competed against 45 teams from Hoquiam, Ilwaco, North Beach, Montesano, Elma, Ocosta, Willapa Valley, South Bend, and Wishkah.

The Naselle team, Sophomore Six, which is comprised of Doug Wise, Keegan McGuire, Evan Hendrickson, Geoff Dunn, Colby Engelson and Aoy Marion, placed first at the meet, beating Hoquiam Team A and Ilwaco Tsunami Brains of Doom in the final round.

The other Naselle team, Mullett, which includes Carl Fredrickson, Richard Smith, Dan White, David Gradt, Katie Klinger and Kelli Revis placed seventh overall, and second among B teams, placing only behind the Sophomore Six team among B schools. Ilwaco Tsunami Brains of Doom placed third overall, Ilwaco Arctic Chill Pill placed fourth, and Ilwaco Suburban Funk placed 12th.

In all, 16 teams from B schools, nine teams from A schools, and 20 teams from AA schools participated in the meet. All teams completed a 60-question written test at the beginning of the meet followed by four 45-question oral rounds. At the end of the four oral rounds, the teams with the top three scores competed in a 45-question final round for the championship.
