ILWACO – With five seniors graduating from the Fishermen basketball team, the move up from junior varsity should be a rapid one next season for many of the players. The JVs finished 7-7, but more importantly, won six of eight Trico-League games down the stretch of their campaign.

Point guard Dylan Wirkkala averaged seven points per game, was an excellent passer and shot the three-point try very well, according to JV coach Chris Hill.

Hill also had praise for freshman guard and team MVP, Jordan Williams, saying, “Jordan did all the little things right and worked his way on to the varsity, averaging 16 points per game for us.”

Junior Ryan Gray was a forward and co-captain, averaging eight points per contest, rebounding very well and proving to be a very coachable young man. Tommy Inserra, another junior, averaged 13 points per game, rebounding and passing well, and exhibiting the skills of a good all around player according to Hill.

Randy Wiegardt, junior center, averaged 12 points per game and led the JVs in rebounding. “Randy had to work against Andy Hudkins every day in practice and he’s become a very good player because of the competition,” Hill said. “He should be a force in the middle next year at the varsity level.”

Tony Crete also saw JV action, working hard and adding scoring punch, according to Hill, as Crete split action between the varsity and junior varsity.

“With the low numbers we had this year, we brought up A.J. Smith, Joe Goelz, and Scott Fagerland from the C-squad and they all did very well in contributing to our overall success this season,” Hill said.
