Christmas trains
ILWACO – The Peninsula Model Railroad Club has put together a “Christmas Wonderland” at Ilwaco Heritage Museum to be displayed and enjoyed for the holidays. The display is an old fashioned Christmas scene, featuring a Santa’s trail running on “G” gauge track, and houses of old Oysterville built and detailed by Ron Biggs. The display is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and is in the book and gift shop. The display is open to the public at no charge. The Peninsula Model Railroad Club is a newly-formed organization for those interested in trains or model railroading. It normally meets twice a month.

Pen. Learns potluck
ILWACO – Peninsula Learns is having a potluck community meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at Hilltop Elementary School. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the closure of the fourth through eighth grade after-school program effective Dec. 19. All interested members of the community are encouraged to attend and contribute to the exploration of future after-school programs. The staff and youth will have a short presentation for the public.

AWANA Games
OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Community Church at 268th and Vernon Avenue in Ocean Park, continues to offer the AWANA program, which is geared for third- through sixth-graders, on Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The “T and T” program, which stands for truth and training, invites new attendees every week. Adult CPR/first-aid
ILWACO – The local office of The American Red Cross is taking registrations for a Dec. 5 CPR and First-Aid class. Rudy Deswart will be the instructor. This class will meet requirements for WISHA and OSHA for workplaces. Class size is limited to 12 participants. The cost is $20 for one class or $30 for both. SHELTON – The Olympic Area Agency on Aging Council of Governments meeting will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5 at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton. St. Mary’s holiday sale

Holiday open house
SKAMOKAWA – The Friends of Skamokawa, located in Redmen Hall in Skamokawa, announces their annual holiday open house on Saturday Dec 7, and Sunday Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
It will feature the work of numerous artisans from both Wahkiakum and Pacific counties. Items to be available for purchase include woven baskets, decorated tiles, blown glass, rag rugs, knitted items, wood carvings, silk screen cards, beeswax candles, quilts, hand puppets and others too numerous to mention. In addition, the gift shop at Redmen Hall is known for its extensive selections of quality books. Its inventory of over 200 line items include topics such as local histories on the fishing, logging and farming industries on the Lower Columbia River. There is now a wide range of Lewis and Clark titles and a section of youth classics like “Little Women,” “Tom Sawyer,” “Black Beauty” and “Jungle Stories” just to name a few.
The Friends of Skamokawa Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of Redmen Hall, a schoolhouse listed on the Register Of National Historic Places. Funds from this open house will be directed to the support of this lovely building.

Dems reorganize
SOUTH BEND – The Pacific County Democrats will hold their reorganizational meeting, Monday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the commissioners meeting room at the County Courthouse Annex in South Bend. Directly after this meeting, the regular monthly meeting will be held to appoint precinct committee officers to fill vacancies. Anyone who is a registered voter and a Democrat may hold this position. Peninsula Quilt Guild

VFW seeks members
ILWACO – The Veterans of Foreign Wars meets on the fourth Tuesday each month at the Legion Hall in Ilwaco at 11 a.m. Currently the VFW will pay the first year’s dues for new members. Recapture the spirit of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as Rex Ziak reads from his new book, “In Full View …” which is a true and accurate account of Lewis and Clark’s arrival at the Pacific Ocean, and their search for a winter camp along the lower Columbia River. Books will be available for purchase after the program.

Shoalwater Birders
OCEAN PARK – The Shoalwater Birders meet in the Ocean Park library on the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. At this month’s meeting, to be held on Dec. 11, the speaker will be Rudy Schuver, president of Friends of Willapa National Life Refuge. LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Elks invites members and guests to a special evening of dinner and fun on Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Elks Lodge, beginning at 5 p.m. Attendees should bring a donation of canned goods and/or toys for children. Fiddling in LB
LONG BEACH – The Friends of the Ilwaco and Ocean Park Timberland Libraries presents Fiddling Down the Oregon Trail from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 14 for all ages. In this lively musical presentation, Phil and Vivian Williams carry on the pioneer music tradition of the Pacific Northwest, playing the hoe-downs, waltzes, reels and schottisches that were played for relaxation after a hard day on the Oregon Trail. Interwoven with the music are the stories of the Pacific Northwest. The public is invited. The Friends will hold their annual meeting and election of officers from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the program immediately following. This program will be held in the Super 8 Motel Conference Room, located at South 5th and Hwy 101 in Long Beach.
